The Best Cafes in Belgrade

Published , by

Belgrade is one of our favorite destinations in the Balkans, a city with charm and style, and something surprising around every corner. Whether you’re digging into Belgrade’s volatile past or just relaxing and enjoying the slightly dusty grandeur of its bohemian neighborhoods, Belgrade is a place where you can enjoy a truly unique (and very affordable) vacation. No matter what you’ve got on your holiday agenda, every traveler needs to take a load off once in a while and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and maybe a muffin or two. The best cafes in Belgrade are always a safe bet. Here’s a list of our top picks, provided by Masa, a member of our trip planning team who also happens to call Belgrade home.

Coffee Dream

While you’re exploring the charming avenues and alleyways of Belgrade, chances are you’ll pass a Coffee Dream at some point. A modern take on the traditional Belgrade cafe, Coffee Dream has outlets all over town. The coffee is always fresh and they also offer a varied menu including homemade iced tea and tempting treats like cake and ice cream. It’s the perfect place to re-engerize before getting back on the tourist trail.

Whether you’re whiling away an afternoon or just popping in to get a coffee to go, Coffee Dream is one of the most consistent cafes in Belgrade. You might not find a great deal of local color here, but the coffee is good and the service is friendly. Address: Various, see website

PROTE.IN

If you’re interested in eating healthy while you travel, one place we’d recommend is PROTE.IN juice bar. They offer a wide range of deliciously creative juices and smoothies, packed with special ingredients from power food to protein powder.

While the ambience here isn’t as alluring as the other cafes on our list, PROTE.IN is perfect while you’re on the go. Whether you’re getting a light breakfast or an afternoon snack, you’ll be impressed by the selection of flavorful fruit drinks. Address: Various, see website

Przionica

One of the few non-smoking places in the city, Przionica makes our list of the best cafes in Belgrade because it has some of the best coffee in the city, hands-down. These folks take their kava seriously, and though the cafe space, with its industrial chic situated in a nondescript neighborhood, won’t remind you of an imperial Viennese cafe, they’ve got the goods.

If you’re just looking for a plain old cup of joe, you can find that here for sure, but you’ll also encounter the likes of the vacuum coffee maker, perhaps the most space-age way to brew. Przionica is an interesting cafe where you can see another side of Belgrade, with young hipsters presiding over artisanal grinders, and Radiohead on the stereo. Don’t miss the little bakery next door, where you can get some tasty sweetbread, homemade cakes, and pastries. Address: Dobracina 59b

Greenet

Greenet is one of the most successful cafe chains in Belgrade, and it’s easy to see why. A complete menu including a variety of drinks and snacks, combined with efficient service and a comfortable atmosphere where you can linger, put it up there with the most modern cafes in Western Europe.

This is a place where you’ll always have expert service and deliciously prepared food and drink. A little more polished then some of the other cafes on our list, it’s reliable when you want a good cup of coffee and some comfort food. Address: Various, see website.

Bistrot Homa

Bistrot Homa isn’t strictly a cafe, but the tasty home-made meals on the menu only add another element to the laid-back cafe-like experience. This is a great place to catch your breath, where a morning coffee can easily transition into lunch or more.

Bistrot Homa is definitely a little more upscale than the other spots on our list, but if you’re looking for that it’s one of our favorite places in Belgrade. You can have it all here, from a buffet breakfast to a burger. Everything on the menu is impressive, but the service is friendly and no one seems to be taking themselves too seriously. Address: Nevesinjska 11

Supermarket

Supermarket is a unique space that’s part fashion boutique, part design shop and part cafe. There’s a distinctly modern art vibe here, but the atmosphere is always warm and welcoming, even if you don’t know Warhol from Warsaw. Excellent coffee is coupled with super fresh deli-style sandwiches and light bites, so it’s worth a visit, even if you aren’t in the neighborhood.

This is certainly one of the hippest spots in the city and there always seems to be something happening here, whether it’s an art show or an impromptu concert. Supermarket is the perfect place to explore with a coffee in hand, admiring the creativity of Belgrade locals. Address: Visnjiceva 10

Red Bread

Red Bread is a sweet spot among the best cafes in Belgrade, offering a big selection of baked goods and freshly squeezed juices and smoothies as well as tasty coffees and teas. It’s a great place to start your day, and the outdoor seating is perfect for people-watching.

If you’re looking for a fresh and healthy meal, this is one of your best bets in the city. Located just down the street from the National Theater, it boasts a great location and a lovely ambience. The food is vegetarian-friendly and very tasty, always fresh and artfully presented, from mozzarella salads to chickpea veggie burgers. Address: Dositejeva 22

Voulez-Vous

As the name suggests, Voulez-Vous is a French-inspired cafe and restaurant that feels as comfortable as it is glamourous. A wide-open space with plenty of outdoor seating means this is the ideal place to unwind, especially during the warmer months.

They have an excellent menu here, and the options range from cakes, coffee and tea to excellent wines and light meals. Voulez-Vous is a popular after-work stop for locals, so it’s great if you’re looking for an upbeat atmosphere. Address: Dorda Vajferta 52
