A Foodie Expedition to Croatia

12 Days / 11 Nights

Dubrovnik, Korcula, Split, Plitvice, Rovinj, Zagreb

Travel and LeisureFodorsUSA TodayNew York TimesNational GeographicWashington PostVogue

This sample 12 day (11 nights) itinerary will have you encountering as many of Croatia's signature dishes and foods as possible. Starting in Dubrovnik where you'll attend a feast with locals and enjoy regional foods and the best peka (lamb and veal under the bell) dinner we've ever had. On the way to Korcula you'll stop at the renowned oyster farms in Ston to try the freshest oysters imaginable, paired with wines from the Peljesac peninsular. While in Korcula you will take a combination food and bike tour - you've got to earn those calories! After a ferry ride to Split it's time to get hands dirty. Your day starts with a market tour to buy the ingredients for your cooking class.

Leaving Split in the rear view mirror of the rental car we'll arrange, we'll give you directions to visit the Bourdain-featured Bibich winery on the way to Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO listed natural wonder. You'll stay in a family run hotel where you can enjoy another peka dinner or some other inland-Croatian dishes. The next day explore the park then drive to Rovinj, a coastal gem in the Istria region. Historically Venetian then Italian, you'll see the influence on architecture and the cuisine equally. While in Rovinj you'll get to go truffle hunting as well as take a wine tasting tour. The final stop will be Zagreb, the capital, for your flight home.

The last night won't be wasted though as we will make some suggestions for where to enjoy your last night of Croatian hospitality. All of our tours are custom, and this is just a sample meant to give an idea for what our trips are like, and the opportunities our destinations provide.

One of our team in the region will be available to you during and leading up to the trip to answer any questions and arrange local services. You will receive access to your Guest Page, with its information on the best these destinations have to offer, including things to see and do, and other inside tips from restaurant recommendations to tipping advice. Upon arrival we will provide you with a local SIM that you can use to contact our employee (who you will meet in person) throughout your trip. In all of our destinations, we offer a variety of memorable 3-5 star accommodation options, including boutique hotels, charming B&Bs, and spacious apartments. With our firsthand experience, we can ensure they are all clean, comfortable, and centrally located, with local ambience.

Dubrovnik offers an unusual blend of modern culture and ancient traditions. Marble-smooth polished limestone streets, a labyrinth of alleyways, and breathtaking architecture compose the unique atmosphere of the Old Town. You’ll experience a true variety of sightseeing, leisure, and outdoor adventures here. Dubrovnik’s most stunning feature is the 82-foot tall city wall which extends more than a mile. Game of Thrones fans will be in luck, as we offer a special tour to local set locations. King’s Landing never looked so good! There’s a rich selection of live performances for music lovers here, as concerts are performed daily, and in July and August the Dubrovnik Summer Festival of music, theatre and dance brings incredible performers from around the world. The nightlife is also exciting, with restaurants, cafes and bars that will keep you socializing until dawn. You’ll be staying in beautiful accommodation within short walking distance to all the major sites, so you’ll be able to sample a little of everything. But there are also several exciting day trips and cruises to enjoy. From kayaking through hidden coves to an authentic Croatian cooking class, vineyard tours, and trips as far afield as Montenegro, you’ll have more than enough to fill your itinerary.

Day 1

Day 1 - Arrival in Dubrovnik

After your flight arrives in Dubrovnik, we will have someone meet you at the airport and bring you to your centrally located Dubrovnik accommodation.

Our representative will then meet with you to answer any questions you have and to get you settled for the rest of your trip.

Day 2

Day 2 - Your First Full Day in Dubrovnik

Meet the Locals

Suggestion to explore on your own

Now you've settled in, it's time to experience Dubrovnik as any good foodie should. Gruz Market and Uvala Lapad are great choices. Gruz Market is the main fresh food and fish market in Dubrovnik. Located in the garden of the Gundulic summer villa, Gruz attracts locals and restaurateurs who come very early in the morning looking for the freshest ingredients at the best prices. It’s the perfect spot to pick up a picnic lunch. Lapad, a peninsula on the most beautiful outer walls of Dubrovnik, is where you’ll find the incredible Sumratin Bay, also known as Uvala Lapad, which has some excellent beaches.

The Best Meal you can have in Dubrovnik

Included in your vacation package price.

Dubrovnik's got some good (and some unfortunately not-so-good) restaurants but the best meal you can possibly have in town isn't at a restaurant. It's to be had at a local's home, sitting down with a family and a select few other visitors. We'll secure you a spot for a Dalmatian dinner experience without equal, that has been written about in the pages of the Wall Street Journal and National Geographic. You'll enjoy a multi-course dinner with wine, where the main event is a spectacular peka dinner - a traditional style of cooking usually translated as 'under the bell'. Lamb, veal and veg covered slow-cooked with the heat coming from all sides. Our marketing manager described this as the best meal he's ever eaten in Croatia. Find out why for yourself.

Along the way you will make a stop to sample some of Croatia's best wines and to take a small boat trip combined with oyster tasting around Ston, the oyster capital of Croatia.

2 Nights in Korcula

One of the best-preserved medieval towns in the Mediterranean, Korcula is instantly recognizable from its red-roofed houses and stunning walled-in Old Town, which juts out into the sea. Two of the biggest attractions are the Cathedral of St. Marco and Marco Polo's original home. One of the greenest islands on the Adriatic, Korcula is poised on the edge of nature on both sides, with rolling hills for hiking and biking behind it, and incredible beaches along the coast. This is the ideal stopover between Dubrovnik and Hvar, and is a pleasant destination for a several-day stay. The island produces some of the region’s finest white wines. Just a brief ferry ride away, the neighboring Peljesac peninsula produces amazing red wines. Mljet, a stunning lake with an island complete with its own monastery, is one of the most impressive day trips from Korcula. You can also take the opportunity to go fishing in the alluring blue waters off the coast, or explore the nearby islands by boat. One of the most unique activities in Korcula is Moreska, an incredible combat dance performance performed by knights with swords. But even if you stay in town, there’s plenty to see. Korcula has a long, varied history going back to the ancient Greeks. The local cultural museums are the best way to get in touch with the past here, even as you enjoy the best Korcula has to offer today.

Local Restaurants

Suggestion to explore on your own

There are plenty of local taverns, or “Konobas” in Korcula, and today you’ll be enjoying one of the best. Konoba Mate is very highly rated. Here you’ll find fresh homemade ingredients combined in creative ways, like pasta with prawns and saffron, or white chocolate mousse with vinegar reduction. Konoba Belin is prized for its laid-back atmosphere. They specialize in fresh and light local cuisine. The salads are always a hit, as are the figs and almonds in chocolate. Aterina is right in the heart of Old Town, so it’s the perfect stop in the midst of sightseeing. With excellent bruschetta, seafood and wine, you’ll want to make a reservation for this quaint restaurant.

Korcula on a Plate Private Tour

Flavors of Korcula

Please ask your travel advisor for the cost to add this to your package

Korcula has become a must-see on the Croatian gastronomy map. From “konobas” (local taverns) to fine dining, one thing is for sure - ingredients have to be local, seasonal and fresh. While walking around the Old Town you can spot the LD Terrace, De Canavellis, and Filippi. These are Korcula's trio of fine dining. Would you prefer a place for a light lunch where locals like to go? Then be sure to visit Aterina. Be sure to check out Konoba Mate or Konoba Maha, which make traditional local cuisine at its best, with amazing peka or Zrnovski Makaruli, accompanied with great local wines. Naturally, you can explore the Old Town with a food guide, enjoying a wine tasting, exploring the city's history, and learning to make a beloved pasta dish at the home of a local family.

2 Nights in Split

The Roman Emperor Diocletian made Split his home in the 4th Century AD, building a vast palace complex on the waterfront that stands to this day. In fact several of the accommodation options we offer in Split are nestled inside its ancient walls. These days there is an embankment in front of Diocletian's palace but the water used to go right up to the main wall. It's on this man-made strip of land that you'll find the Riva, a pedestrian promenade bustling with life. Split's UNESCO listed Old Town is contained within these old walls and is a pedestrian-only maze that it is quite easy, but fun, to get lost in. Who know what romantic hidden cafés you might find in one of the narrow streets and alleyways? To get the best out of your time in Split, however, we recommend taking a tour with a local guide. Split is very well connected for flights, with an international airport a half hour drive away and is a popular stopping point for our guests on their way between Dubrovnik and the islands of Hvar, Vis, or Korcula, all easily reached by a ferry from Split's port. If you base yourself in Split for a few days, you will find it is also perfect located for visits to some of Croatia's most stunning national parks.

Eat where the Locals Eat

Suggestion to explore on your own

For your first dinner in Split, we highly recommend Konoba Fife, right on the harbor. Here you’ll find delicious local seafood and an authentic atmosphere at the right price. It’s a charming spot that’s inviting and unpretentious, authentic and definitely not stuffy. You’ll enjoy the atmosphere almost as much as the food. Be sure to ask about the daily specials.

Explore Diocletian's Palace with an Expert Guide

Included in your vacation package price.

Today you’ll exploring the inspiring city of Split with a local guide. You’ll be picked up at your accommodation and led through the UNESCO-listed 1,700-year-old Diocletian’s palace, which is just the beginning of the tour. You’ll also see the Cathedral of Saint Duje, one of the most beautiful cultural wonders on the Adriatic coast. And you’ll explore the ancient cellars as well as the square in the center of the palace. The stunning Roman temples will awaken the spirit of another time for you, as will the famous Golden Gate and the big statue of Grgur Ninski. This is the best way to get to know the incredible history of this beloved destination.

Rovinj used to go by Rovigno, and to Italian-speakers it still does. This city was once part of the Republic of Venice, which is evident from the street names in Italian to the Venetian architectural flourishes, such as the bell tower that crowns the town. This laid-back spot has a full cultural calendar, with numerous festivals taking place in the warmer months. We’ll help you get to know the local culture, with possible activities like a local wine tasting, a fish cooking masterclass with a local chef, or a truffle hunting adventure in nearby Croatia. Then, to work up an appetite for your next delicious meal, you could rent bikes and cruise through the breathtaking Zlatni Rt Park. You’ll definitely want to visit the local market too. History buffs will love visiting the local cultural heritage museum, which gives great insight into the region. When you’re ready to get in the car, a day trip to Pula is always fun. This busy port town hosts a large market packed with delectable local specialities, and also boasts a Roman amphitheater. You could even arrange a full-day private tour through the gorgeous region of Istria, where more delights await you inland.

Local Wine Tasting

Today you’ll be tasting some of the rich wines the Rovinj countryside has to offer. These are rebellious, uncommon and curious wines produced by passionate people. Think of thick, oily, sherry-like Malvazija, which is a heady 15% and is considered by some sommeliers the best orange wine in Istria. Or there’s a curious red blend that includes Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grown on Rovinj's red soil locales near the sea and aged in stone cellars. You’ll even get to satisfy your sweet tooth with a dessert wine made of Malvazija dried for several months on straw. The tour also includes a quick lunch in an off-the-beaten-path family tavern. Here you will learn the basics of pairing local food with the wines you’ve tasted. At the end of the tour you’ll be driven back to your accommodation.
