10 Days Central European Cities Tour: Prague, Krakow & Budapest

This sample 10-day (9 nights) itinerary covers the Central European classics: our Prague, Krakow and Budapest Tour is a very popular combination. These three destinations will give you a complete picture of Central Europe's vibrant varieties of culture, architecture, cuisine and landscapes. You'll notice similarities in the spires and cathedrals of each city, but each is unique, waiting to charm you with something unexpected around every corner. Oh and whatever you do, don't call the region 'Eastern Europe', the locals don't like it! The services we provide as part of our comprehensive packages include accommodations, transfers, transport between destinations, and city tours. In addition to the walking tours included we can arrange a number of excursions based on your own interests. There is also an option to travel between cities by private car or van transfers at an extra cost. You could also reverse the direction and go Budapest - Krakow - Prague, or change the order of cities and make it a Prague - Budapest - Krakow tour. Our Destination Manager in the region will provide assistance before and during your travels. They will be available to you leading up to the trip to answer any questions and arrange local services. You will be provided with information on the best these destinations have to offer, including things to see and do, restaurants, entertainment and other insider tips. Upon arrival we will provide you with a local cell phone that you can use to contact our Destination Manager throughout your trip. In all of our destinations we offer a variety of accommodation options, including boutique-style hotels, charming B&Bs and spacious apartments ranging from a three to five-star level. From our first-hand experience we can ensure they are all clean, comfortable and centrally located. We generally discourage chain hotels but provide accommodations with unique features or an authentic feel.

Get to Know Prague on a City Walking Tour
Prague's main historic sights are situated on the so-called Royal Route between the Old Town and Prague Castle, crossing the river on the Charles Bridge. To make the most of your visit, we will book a private walking tour to put you in touch with all the history and romanticism of this wonderful city. As the tour ends in the courtyard of Prague Castle, you might want to continue the day by following one of the tour routes in the castle.

Optional: Explore Bohemia on a Day Trip from Prague
Take a break from the city and get out into the Bohemian countryside. Head east or west on your pick of two very different day trips. Two hours to the north, close to the German border is the ornate spa town of Karlovy Vary, or Carlsbad to its neighbors. With elegant colonnades, luxury and medicinal spas, a local herbal liquor distillery and a crystal factory, there's plenty to fill your day here! If you'd prefer a shorter journey and a more traditional Bohemian town then we'd recommend UNESCO-listed Kutna Hora. It's best-known for its "bone church," the Sedlec Ossuary, but is actually listed for its beautiful historic Old Town, St. Barbara's cathedral and the Italian court, once the royal mint, due to the now-exhausted silver mines in the area.

You will be seated in Premium Class, with a steward serving you complimentary drinks and snacks. From Bohumin the final two hours of the journey are aboard the train company's dedicated bus service to Krakow Bus Station.

A little about Prague

“The Golden City,” “The City of 100 Spires,” “The Mother of Cities”... Prague has no shortage of nicknames, and they all pay homage to the city’s charm and beauty. Prague’s winding cobblestone streets, its gorgeous architecture and its atmospheric bridges are fabled, and with good reason: this is a city like no other. From exploring the history and modern culture on foot, to traveling farther afield to take in the picturesque countryside and fairytale villages, you’ll have an itinerary full of adventure and relaxation. This is a very walkable city surrounded by easy-to-reach destinations in the surrounding regions. Besides the city’s history, which is evident on every street, including the beautifully preserved former Jewish Quarter, a rich program awaits. There will be plenty of time to sample the famous Bohemian beer, as we can offer several delightful gastronomic experiences, including a romantic dinner cruise on the Vltava river, and a relaxing afternoon at an actual beer spa! Day-trip destinations include scenic castles, the perfect spa town, and the Renaissance village of Cesky Krumlov. Prague is a city of history that comes to life for every visitor. No matter what your interests, you’ll find yourself intrigued by the inviting magic of the Czech capital in the heart of Europe.

Included : Krakow Bus Station Transfer

Day 2

Exploring Krakow: Private City Walking Tour
Today you’ll be getting a feel for the story of the city with a private tour hosted by a local tour guide. This is the best way to discover little known historical facts and anecdotes while wandering around the heart of the Krakow. You will begin your tour by visiting the Jewish District of Kazimierz. The next stop is a short walk up to the Wawel Hill. Atop it is the Royal Castle and a 14th-century cathedral. Having descended the hill, you’ll stroll along Kanonicza and Grodzka Streets to reach Collegium Maius (Great College). The tour continues to the Main Market Square, making for the perfect place to pick up souvenirs, especially in the Cloth Hall. The tour is completed with a visit to St. Mary’s Church. Your guide knows all the secrets of the city and will give you insight into the historical events that have made Krakow the special place it is today. The guide will pick you up at your accommodation and will drop you off there after the tour, or can provide suggestions for further exploration.

Quirky Quarter: Exploring Kazimierz
Kazimierz is Krakow’s most unique neighborhood, combining its heritage as the Jewish Quarter with a more recent reinvention as the city’s bohemian headquarters, with great cafes and galleries, markets, museums and more. Today we recommend exploring the neighborhood at your leisure. The historical side of Kazimierz includes five synagogues and the New Jewish Cemetery. We definitely recommend visiting the Old Synagogue, one of the country’s oldest surviving examples of Jewish religious architecture. Beyond that, you should plan to explore the neighborhood’s hipper enclaves, especially the cafes and bars around the square called Plac Nowy, where you’ll also find numerous markets. Excellent restaurants also abound, including the kosher restaurant Olive Tree, French bistro Zazie and the delicious restaurant Szara Kazimierz.

Included : Krakow Private Walking Tour

Day 3

Optional: Dark History: An Excursion to Auschwitz
A visit to Krakow isn’t truly complete without an excursion to the Auschwitz concentration camp, the biggest Nazi death camp in Europe. 70 kilometers from Krakow, the camp has been turned into a monument and museum, testifying to the atrocities that took place here. Today we recommend exploring this dark chapter of history with a six-hour guided tour. You will be picked up at your hotel and you’ll be driven to Auschwitz, where you’ll join a tour of the camp and the Auschwitz Memorial Museum given by one of the museum's expert guides. Onboard the bus, you can watch historical documentaries, to give you more insight into these events. At the end of the day you’ll be driven back to your accommodation.

Auschwitz-Birkenau Group Tour

Duration : 6-7 hours

Optional: Out of Town: Salt Mine Excursion
One of the day trips from Krakow we recommend most is the Wieliczka Salt Mines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site just outside the city. You’ll be picked up at your hotel and driven by bus to the salt mines, where you’ll get a fascinating glimpse into history. This amazing 800-year old sat mine is full of monuments, carvings and altar pieces. It feels like entering a vast subterranean city. You’ll explore underground with an experienced guide, then stop at the souvenir shop and gift bar before heading back to the city.

Day 4

Say farewell to Krakow today, you're leaving on a jet plane. Your destination is bustling Budapest. A driver will transfer you from your accommodation in time for the early morning direct flight. We'll book economy class tickets with luggage for you. If you'd prefer not to fly, there are buses, but it's a seven hour journey through Slovakia to get to Hungary. A private transfer is also an option, which would give you the opportunity to make a lunch stop along the way.
Included : Krakow Airport Transfer, Krakow - Budapest Flight

A little about Krakow

Krakow may not be the largest city in Poland, but it is by far the most popular with travelers. Less industrial than Warsaw, Krakow was once Poland’s royal capital, and unlike the rest of the country, came out of World War II with its gorgeous architecture mostly unscathed. One glance at the city’s perfectly preserved and restored Old Town and it will be abundantly clear why Krakow is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. This compact historical district houses the largest square in Europe, where you can stroll, shop from the market and sample some tasty Polish delicacies. And, if you’re in the mood you can also sip some of Poland’s famous vodka infused with tangy buffalo grass. Krakow’s cultural life is rich and there are more than enough classical and jazz concerts to attend during your stay. Just walk through Old Town any evening and you’ll find warmly lit cafes, restaurants and bars. Of course, not all of the city’s history is happy, and both the Jewish Heritage in Krakow as well as nearby Auschwitz concentration camp are a chilling and vivid reminder of World War II. You can also explore Poland’s natural wonders from Krakow, with visits to the atmospheric Wieliczka Salt Mine, and the Tatra Mountains all comfortable day trips.

You'll start by hopping on the metro to the Opera House, Heroes' Square and City Park at the far end of Andrassy Blvd. Then you'll return to the center, where St. Stephen’s Basilica awaits. From there you'll get a closer look at the Buda side of the city, where your guide will point out Gellert Hill, the Citadel and the Royal Palace before leading you up through the old cobblestone streets to Fisherman’s Bastion and St. Matthias Church, where your tour will conclude.

Mix with the Locals
Is there anything more quintessentially Budapest than a visit to one of the legendary baths? With more hot springs than any other capital, the city lets you take your pick of various styles, from the old school Turkish Rudas Baths to the Art Nouveau Gellert Baths on the Buda side of the city, or even the Neo-Baroque Szechenyi Baths with a large outdoor pool in Pest’s City Park.

Day 3

Optional: Sample Hungarian Food and Wine with an Expert, or on Your Own
The Hungarians have always placed a lot of importance on food, and their cuisine is probably the most interesting in Central Europe. Get familiar with the aromas and flavors of Hungarian cuisine on our Gastro-Budapest Tour, which will introduce you to classic local dishes, wines and spirits as well as show you some of the best places to shop, eat and drink in the city. You can follow in the footsteps of Anthony Bourdain, with lunch in the same butcher's shop, before finishing the tour with a Hungarian wine tasting.

Take this unforgettable trip through the northern hills of Hungary and sip on some of the most delectable wine in Europe. The excellent red and whites of this historical wine region are served in wine cellars that have been refined over hundreds of years. On offer is a specialty of Eger called Bull’s Blood, a cuvee made from merlot and kekfrankos grapes that tastes wildly differently from cellar to cellar.

A little about Budapest

The Paris of Central Europe, Budapest is the Queen of the Danube, a sprawling, regal city split in two halves by the mighty river. The city’s two UNESCO-listed halves, ancient Buda and modern Pest both have their charms and are linked by numerous picturesque bridges. From the Buda Castle to the Danube Embankment and the sprawling Andrassy Avenue, with its impressive architecture, there is plenty to keep you busy here, exploring and discovering this atmospheric city. It’s a little too big to explore only on foot, but the Pest side of the city is well laid out with broad avenues of the Parisian system, so it’s hard to get lost, and there is also comprehensive public transport. Budapest has all the charm of Western Europe at a fraction of the price. Here you can taste excellent wines produced throughout the region, and even enjoy Michelin-star dining. We can offer you more than enough exciting activities in the city, from a visit to the incredible Parliament building to a boat cruise with dinner, or an exploration of Budapest’s communist past. The city also has a rich Jewish heritage, so you’ll find the perfect balance of history and modern culture here. Voted Best City in Europe in 2013 by Condé Nast Traveler readers and a regular in their top 3, Budapest really is a special city with activities to cater to every interest.

"Great staff to work with. Everything went perfectly, drivers on time, hotels were just what we were looking for with great locations. Guides were fantastic. Everything went smoothly and it was nice to talk to someone rather than just email. Our driver in Budapest was wonderful. He took us to the train and showed us where the platform was and how to read the board. He went above and beyond when he saw my husband was nervous about it and actually showed us our car and seats. That is such special service."

"Jayway people really listen to their clients' needs and respond effectively. Personal service backed up by deep knowledge of Central Europe. Kevin Axe effectively listened to me and created the perfect trip for us. Friendly face to face service especially Marek and Nataly were outstanding. Each hotel was high quality and perfectly located. Right in the heart of each old city. Wonderful choices! On time, excellent English, clean vehicles, friendly drivers."

- Traveled to Prague, Salzburg, Vienna & Budapest in May 2017 - rating:

"We were so happy to have found JayWay during our research. We have traveled through other countries in Europe where we coordinated the logistics, but with little knowledge of Central Europe and the language and money differences we were uncomfortable going it alone on this trip. The idea of a group type tour was very unappealing so finding a tour company that would handle the logistics without having to travel with 40 other people was great. It allowed us to have the style of trip we wanted and relax and enjoy it without having to be concerned with the details. We learned so much from the local support personnel that assisted us and it really enriched the trip. Thank you!!!"

- Traveled to Prague, Cesky Krumlov, Vienna, Budapest in December 2015 - rating:
(5/5)

"We had an extraordinary experience. From our arrival, when we met Kinga, a fantastic representative for JayWay, to our being dropped off at the Prague airport, we had memorable experiences in three beautiful cities. The itineraries were clearly presented and well-thought out by someone who knew what s/he was doing. Our trip was a joy. Again, thank you for a great time!"

- Traveled to Budapest, Vienna, Prague in November 2015 - rating:
(5/5)

"Everyone at JayWay was very responsive, knowledgeable and friendly. Our trip was fabulous and exactly as I had hoped and pictured. JayWay provided the right mix of a planned tour without being on a tour! Our accommodations were fabulous, restaurant recommendations were good, the itinerary info was perfect. Thanks so much!"

- Traveled to Budapest, Vienna, Prague in October 2015 - rating:
(4.5/5)

"Everything was seamless. That's the way we like it. Also, we prefer to explore on our own, and JayWay provided the information we needed to do that. Everyone responded when we needed them, including Jay."

- Traveled to Prague, Vienna, Budapest in September 2015 - rating:
(5/5)

"JayWay Travel was exactly what we needed in planning our vacation. Other travel agencies offered tours that included most of the places that we wanted to see, but we were not able to fit into their fixed time schedules and routes. JayWay offered us the flexibility that we needed. We had the secure feeling of being on an organized tour, and JayWay's scheduling allowed us plenty of free time to explore the cities as we liked."

- Traveled to Bucharest, Sighisoara, Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg, Cesky Krumlov, Prague in January 2015 - rating:

"I would describe working with Jayway as a reliable, trustworthy and intelligent way to travel. This was one of our best travel experiences ever. Everything worked seamlessly. Great staff and all of our expectations were met and exceeded. Prague, Vienna, and Budapest are also awesome cities to visit."
