Zagreb is a city where different worlds have long come together. Situated at the intersection of ancient trade routes between the Adriatic and Central Europe, it is a cosmopolitan place with various cultural influences evident in the cuisine and architecture at home in any Austro-Hungarian city. You’ll love exploring the open-air markets, impressive buildings, peaceful parks, and many delicious restaurants. Just strolling through the unique combination of medieval towers, 19th century palaces, ancient churches, and market squares is a pleasure, but there’s much more to do here. After exploring all that the city has to offer with a local guide, you’ll be able to make the most of your time. You could also take a guided bike tour around the city, to get a little exercise as you experience the city. But you’ll also want to explore some of the region surrounding Zagreb. As a longer day trip, you could see the delightful Trakoscan, a neo-Gothic castle sitting on a hilltop, surrounded by a romantic English style park with exotic trees and an artificial lake. While you’re there you can also stop in Varazdin to appreciate its ornate baroque architecture.

There are numerous museums to visit in Zagreb, but two of the most unique are the Museum of Broken Relationships and the Arts and Crafts Museum. We recommend visiting at least one today. The Museum of Broken Relationships grew from a traveling exhibition revolving around the concept of failed relationships, and overcoming emotional pain through creation and rebirth. The Museum of Arts and Crafts was founded in 1880 as one of the first institutions of its kind in Europe with a rich collection of local cultural and historical creations which reflect everyday life and work.

Ljubljana enjoys a central position, making it the ideal base for exploring the rest of Slovenia. It is a crossroads culturally due to its location. On one hand, you can see its Central European influences, because of its time within the Austro-Hungarian empire, in the city's architecture and language. On the other hand there is a strong Mediterranean and Balkan influence which is brought out in their laid back approach and the city's café culture. People are often surprised how westernized and advanced Slovenia is putting it more in a class with its Austrian neighbors than its Eastern European and Balkan counterparts. The surrounding areas of the city are packed with natural beauty and cultural sights bearing witness to the city's dynamic history. There is diverse range of places to satisfy culinary desires as the local cuisine is also heavily influenced by its neighbors in all directions. Wine lovers will find Slovenia to be a hidden gem. One of the best ways we have found to get to know Ljubljana and Slovenian cuisine at the same time is on a food tour, which will take you on a gastronomic tour of the whole country while walking around the center. The city layout is tourist friendly as the Old Town has an ever expanding pedestrian zone and a great way to see Ljubljana is by bike taking advantage of the numerous bike lanes spread out across the city.

The Vivid History of Ljubljana Castle

Suggestion to explore on your own

Today we recommend exploring one of the most striking parts of Ljubljana’s skyline: Ljubljana Castle. Set on a hill overlooking the entire city, the castle can be reached on foot or by funicular. You’ll find different guided tours that will provide a unique castle experience, or you can make discoveries on your own with the help of an audioguide. This is a great way to get a more in-depth picture of the rich story of Ljubljana’s founding. Ticket prices depend on the type of the tour and on the inclusion of the funicular ride. The view from the tower of the castle is a must-see. If you want to be treated like a king, go for a fine dining experience in the Strelec Restaurant, located in the castle's picturesque Shooters' Tower.

A morning start is recommended for your trip to Rovinj as there are some fascinating stops along the way. A private van and driver will pick you up from your accommodations. Rovinj used to go by Rovigno, and to Italian-speakers it still does. This city was once part of the Republic of Venice, which is evident from the street names in Italian to the Venetian architectural flourishes, such as the bell tower that crowns the town. This laid-back spot has a full cultural calendar, with numerous festivals taking place in the warmer months. We’ll help you get to know the local culture, with possible activities like a local wine tasting, a fish cooking masterclass with a local chef, or a truffle hunting adventure in nearby Croatia. Then, to work up an appetite for your next delicious meal, you could rent bikes and cruise through the breathtaking Zlatni Rt Park. You’ll definitely want to visit the local market too. History buffs will love visiting the local cultural heritage museum, which gives great insight into the region. When you’re ready to get in the car, a day trip to Pula is always fun. This busy port town hosts a large market packed with delectable local specialities, and also boasts a Roman amphitheater. You could even arrange a full-day private tour through the gorgeous region of Istria, where more delights await you inland.

The Roman Emperor Diocletian made Split his home in the 4th Century AD, building a vast palace complex on the waterfront that stands to this day. In fact several of the accommodation options we offer in Split are nestled inside its ancient walls. These days there is an embankment in front of Diocletian's palace but the water used to go right up to the main wall. It's on this man-made strip of land that you'll find the Riva, a pedestrian promenade bustling with life. Split's UNESCO listed Old Town is contained within these old walls and is a pedestrian-only maze that it is quite easy, but fun, to get lost in. Who know what romantic hidden cafés you might find in one of the narrow streets and alleyways? To get the best out of your time in Split, however, we recommend taking a tour with a local guide. Split is very well connected for flights, with an international airport a half hour drive away and is a popular stopping point for our guests on their way between Dubrovnik and the islands of Hvar, Vis, or Korcula, all easily reached by a ferry from Split's port. If you base yourself in Split for a few days, you will find it is also perfect located for visits to some of Croatia's most stunning national parks.

Eat Like a Local

Suggestion to explore on your own

If you’re looking for a delicious lunch or dinner in Split, we highly recommend Konoba Fife, right on the harbor. There you’ll find delicious local seafood and an authentic atmosphere at the right price. It’s a charming spot that’s inviting and unpretentious, authentic instead of stuffy. Be sure to ask about the daily specials! We also recommend visiting Split's famous fish and greengrocer's markets, a central part of local life. We recommend visiting in early morning, when the seafood is at its freshest, and there are the most options. This is when many locals buy food for lunch.

One of the greenest islands on the Adriatic, Korcula is poised on the edge of nature on both sides, with rolling hills for hiking and biking behind it, and incredible beaches along the coast. This is the ideal stopover between Dubrovnik and Hvar, and is a pleasant destination for a several-day stay. The island produces some of the region’s finest white wines. Just a brief ferry ride away, the neighboring Peljesac peninsula produces amazing red wines. Mljet, a stunning lake with an island complete with its own monastery, is one of the most impressive day trips from Korcula. You can also take the opportunity to go fishing in the alluring blue waters off the coast, or explore the nearby islands by boat. One of the most unique activities in Korcula is Moreska, an incredible combat dance performance performed by knights with swords. But even if you stay in town, there’s plenty to see. Korcula has a long, varied history going back to the ancient Greeks. The local cultural museums are the best way to get in touch with the past here, even as you enjoy the best Korcula has to offer today.

Flavors of Korcula

Suggestion to explore on your own

Korcula has become a must-see on the Croatian gastronomy map. From “konobas” (local taverns) to fine dining, one thing is for sure - ingredients have to be local, seasonal and fresh. While walking around the Old Town you can spot the LD Terrace, De Canavellis, and Filippi. These are Korcula's trio of fine dining. Or you maybe fancy some seafood? Some dare to say Nonno has the best fish in the town! A place for a light lunch where locals like to go? Aterina for sure. But let's not forget that there are amazing konobas inland, which even Bill Gates is fond of. Be sure to check out Konoba Mate or Konoba Maha, which make traditional local cuisine at its best, with amazing peka or Zrnovski Makaruli, accompanied with great local wines. One thing you need to remember is that you need to be hungry before dining out, as the portions here are very generous! Don't forget to book your table!
