Europe at its most remote

Scenic Svaneti is the highest and most remote part of Georgia, home to some of Europe’s tallest mountains and villages. The locals are friendly, but as hardy as they come, having beaten back invaders for millenia, with the help of their famous tower homes. This history is on display in Mestia’s modern ethnographic museum, and in its tower house museum, which are packed with artifacts that tell the region’s stories. Small Mestia is the region’s capital, home to its sole airport, and much of its tourism and best restaurants (including the country’s highest restaurant, at the end of a stunning cable car ride). If you’ve seen pictures of Georgia tower homes clustered together in a scenic mountain valley, you’ve probably been looking at Mestia or Ushguli. UNESCO-decorated Ushguli is the highest village in Europe, and lies near the foot of one of the continent’s tallest mountains, but is a long 4X4 ride away, and even private bathrooms are rare in the basic accommodations found there. Svaneti itself is famed for its hiking and waterfalls in summer, and skiing come winter.

While the nearby Black Sea means Svaneti is not as cold as it should be considering the altitude, it is still cut off from much of the world in winter thanks to impressively heavy snow. Svaneti is a long drive from the rest of Georgia (six hours from Kutaisi, several hours more from Tbilisi). If you’re looking for a day or two in the mountains we recommend visiting Kazbegi instead, due to its location, famous vistas, and more developed services. There are light-aircraft flights to Mestia, but due to weather, these are unreliable in fall and spring, and they often book up long ahead of time.

It was a very organized trip. From airport pick up to walking tours and visiting Unesco sites, it was worth every penny.
