Crete's subtle celebrity retreat, on a lake and the sea.

The heart, soul, and capital of Lassithi (Crete's easternmost region), Agios Nikolaos ("St. Nicholas") has attracted celebrities like Walt Disney since the 60s, but remains small and humble. The town's crown jewel is Voulismeni Lake, a lagoon that has served as an inner harbor since Napoleon's men connected it to the sea. Surrounding Voulismeni are numerous restaurants and cafes, offering postcard-worthy views and romantic ambience.

Agios Nikolaos enjoys a prime location within close proximity to the Lassithi's numerous traditional villages and historical sites. Lassithi's unspoiled beauty, from rugged mountains, to expansive plateaus and deep cliffs, make it one of the most exciting region’s of Crete, as do its important historical sites, with their traces of ancient civilizations. Nearby Spinalonga Island is an important part of Crete's history, thanks to its 15th century Venetian fortress, which later saw use as an infamous leper colony. The seabed of the nearby Mirabello Bay is the site of the ancient sunken city of Olous, the remains of which can be admired from a boat.

Agios Nikolaos is the largest city in Lassithi, Crete's easternmost region. This is the place to be if you're a nature lover, as the land is blessed with astonishing beauty, which can be admired on a day trip to one of the region’s most impressive canyons, Richtis Gorge. On an adventure-packed tour, you can also visit the world’s oldest olive tree and enjoy a refreshing swim at a postcard-perfect beach.

If traditional villages and local agriculture are more to your liking, we have the perfect day trip for you. Visit one of the most beautiful villages of the region, set at the foothills of the Dikti Mountains, which is home to several notable canyons, and Crete's largest pine forest. End the day at the southernmost point of Europe with a cup of mountain tea and mesmerizing views of the Libyan Sea.

For a day in paradise, visit one of Europe's dreamiest beaches of Europe. The tiny paradisiacal island of Chrysi has silken sand, and is home to rare Lebanese cedars. This uninhabited island is a short boat ride from Ierapetra. Nearby Vai beach features an entire forest of the Cretan Date Palm, the only palm tree native to Europe.
