Day Stop in Naples

To call Naples rough around the edges would be quite the understatement. Yet amidst the chaos and beneath the grime is one of Italy's true gems. It's the third-largest city in the country, home to over three million people. An important port city for all the civilizations that have existed there, Naples is the original melting pot. Founded as Neapolis (literally "new city") by the Greeks in the 7th century B.C., Naples has many layers of history for you to discover.

Day 1 - Day Stop in Naples

Day 1 - Day Stop in Naples

Upon your arrival, a driver will pick you up at Naples Airport and take you to one of the most famous parts of coastline in the world, the Amalfi Coast. A rugged south-facing coastline with five fishing villages. In contrast to Cinque Terre, its counterpart in the north of Italy, the Amalfi villages can all be reached by road. We will arrange for a driver to pick you up in Naples and take you to your accommodation in Positano. Along the way, for a extra fee, we can arrange for a stop in Pompeii, or our recommendation, the much less crowded yet at least as interesting Herculaneum, part of the same UNESCO listing as Pompeii. A visit to the rim of the crater of Vesuvius is another option en route.

3 Nights in Positano

Of all the towns that constitute the Amalfi Coast, Positano is almost certainly the most photographed. A cascade of color rolling down steep hillsides towards the sea. The Amalfi Coast road snakes through the town, providing the main means of connectivity to the outside world. The only other option is by boat and there are regular ferries to the other Amalfi Coast towns and to Capri island in the Bay of Naples, so day-tripping is definitely a possibility. Positano's coarse-grain sand public beaches can fill up fast on sunny days but there are quieter stretches to be found and a water taxi ride will take you to somewhere more secluded. Positano is at one end of the Path of the Gods, a demanding hiking trail that will take you inland to the town of Agerola, but the journey is its own reward, with some killer views along the way.

Aperitif on the Edge

Suggestion to explore on your own

Explore Positano's city center by strolling through its tiny alleys and climbing the many stairs that cross the city from the beach to the higher areas. Visit the local artisan shops selling different local products, and finally, head to the legendary Music on the Rocks, a bar located on the edge of the cliff, where you can enjoy dinner and drinks with a stunning view of the sea.

Once you arrive at Marina Grande you could hop in an open-top taxi or take the funicular to visit the town of Capri for some shopping. The quieter town of Anacapri is more suitable if you're looking for a laid-back kind of place. Another popular option is to take a boat to the island's most famous sight, the Blue Grotto.

One great way to enjoy both the island and the water is a boat trip from Sorrento on the Amalfi coast. This is available as a group tour or as a private tour.

Capri & Anacapri Group Tour

The area offers a wonderful view of the island from its beautiful shady garden. Next you'll go from Anacapri to Capri by private minibus. After lunch you can visit the Garden of Augustus, which has a wonderful view of the famous “Faraglioni.” The main square here, Piazza Umberto I, has a pretty white church and several open-air cafes where you can sit and watch the world drift by. Pompeii Private Day Trip with Cooking Class and Wine Tasting on Mount Vesuvius from Positano

Taste Amalfi's Wines

Please ask your travel advisor for the cost to add this to your package

The scenic rugged cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, falling almost vertically into the deep blue sea, require a particularly strenuous effort to allow the creation of vineyards. Such an ordeal to deserve the expression of "heroic wine-making” for cultivation of red and white grapes in drystone terraces.

We offer a day trip to the impressive Sorrentino Vini winery, on the slopes of Vesuvius. This comes complete with a cooking class and wine tasting. Another slightly less touristy but harder to reach option is Tenuta San Francesco in Tramonti, a little more inland. This is best if you have your own vehicle.

The capital of Italy is a vibrant, energetic and stylish city. While thoroughly modern in sensibility, Rome is also home to some of the world’s most important works of classic art and architecture. This city has been an epicenter for culture, politics and religion for more than 2,500 years. From the Spanish Steps to the Vatican, there are more than enough sights to keep even the most active tourists busy and even somewhere as popular as Rome you can find places just off the tourist trail and bustling with locals. But it’s also nice to slow down and enjoy Rome’s famous cafes and restaurants, which can be just as beguiling as the buildings. Lounge with an espresso on the Campo de Fiori and watch the changing light on the fountains and the facades. Visit the Vatican and explore some of the world’s most beautiful churches. Rome really comes alive at night, when restaurants and wine bars bring a renewed vitality to the city. You’ll also have opportunities for day trips to local vineyards, olive groves, and other places producing regional delicacies. No matter what your interests, or what kind of holiday you’re looking for, Rome will be an enjoyable destination.

Aperitivo

Suggestion to explore on your own

If you are strolling in the city and it gets to early evening (around 6:30 PM), well, it's time for the "happy hour"! An Italian happy hour is called "aperitivo," and most bars offer it around this time. You can find many different kinds of aperitivo, from buffet to "à la carte", where you pick a drink (usually a glass of white wine or some prosecco) and you'll get something light to eat such as chips, nuts, or slices of pizza with it. The best places where you can go are Freni e Frizioni (Trastevere), Doppiozeroo (Ostiense), and Rec23 (Testaccio - a few steps from Circo Massimo). From June to September, along the river (Lungo Il Tevere), there are many stands and places where you can go right next to the water on the sidewalk.

Go out for an "Aperitivo"!

As the northern-most of the Cinque Terre villages, Monterosso-al-Mare (literally the red mountain by the sea) is the most accessible of five. Road, rail and ferry links, and a wide choice of hotels make this an excellent base for visiting all the other villages and neighboring towns as well. This choice and accessibility comes at a price – it is the least pretty of the five. Yet that will hardly seem to matter when you're looking out to sea, or hiking the steep trail to Vernazza, the next village. Monterosso has the largest and best equipped beach of all the Cinque Terre villages so if some sun worship is on your vacation agenda, this is the perfect spot. As well as the opportunity to hike in the Cinque Terre national park between some of the villages you can also take the regular trains or if seas allow, the ferry service to the other villages. Private and boat day trips provide another way to admire the villages from their most natural aspect, the sea.

Italy’s fashion and business hub, Milan fizzes with energy. But don't let the city's professional side fool you: this is a place that prides itself on history and culture, and the locals always seems to be having a good time. Milan's signature building is the Duomo, an imposing Gothic cathedral that sits in the heart of this former Roman capital. The combination of its size and beauty make it a must-see sight. You can also look forward to elegant evenings at the legendary La Scala opera, charming cafes and restaurants, great shopping opportunities, and breathtaking art and architecture. Home to Da Vinci's Last Supper, Milan is also rich in art galleries, from the old masters to contemporary art. This being Italy, you'll find delicious cuisine here too, and the "aperitivo" is one of the most interesting traditions of Milan gastronomy. At many of the city's cafes and bars in the early evening you can pay a slightly higher price for a drink and get your pick from a free buffet. It's one of the best ways to experience the different flavors of Milanese cooking. The compact city center means that one or two days should be enough to satisfy your curiosity.

Your local JayWay contact will recommend several places to visit in this area, both shops and eateries, and can also recommend places in another area known for its vintage fashion.

Leonardo da Vinci and his Milanese Masterpieces

Suggestion to explore on your own

Leonardo da Vinci spent many years in Milan, where some of his works are still kept. Start at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, a treasure chest that displays "The Portrait of a Musician" and "The Atlantic Codex." You can see "The Last Supper" in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Tickets are very hard to get, and the official website is sold out a year in advance. We recommend booking a tour with our expert local guide, which includes the entrance ticket.

Best of Milan: The Last Supper, Duomo & City Small Group Tour

Best of Milan: The Last Supper, Duomo & City Small Group Tour

Included in your vacation package price.

Visiting The Last Supper is a complicated affair. Located on a wall inside a convent, the mural was long neglected, leading to some damage that authorities are now attempting to undo. As a result, limits have been set on visitors. Only 30 people are allowed inside the climate-controlled room at any time and they may only stay for 15 minutes, after waiting in an air-locked room beforehand. This has made Last Supper tickets highly sought after to say the least! With this tour, you don't have to worry about securing tickets in advance - we've taken care of that for you!

With pre-reserved, skip-the-line tickets we guarantee that you’ll visit The Last Supper on our Best of Milan tour and you’ll do so with a highly knowledgeable guide at hand to help you get the most from this special visit. You’ll get a rundown on the painting before you enter, so you’re ready to make the most of your time.

As you move around the room with your guide and small group, admiring its incredible depth and perspective, you'll learn about the characters in the painting and how Leonardo da Vinci became one of the most renowned painters in history. You’ll probably only see this masterpiece once in your lifetime (particularly since it’s disintegrating at such an alarming rate) so make it count!

The last stop of the day is a special one – the Duomo. The largest church in Italy. It took almost six centuries to complete, but it was worth every moment.

Your guide will teach you about the history of this great structure from the Duomo square; pointing out different architectural features and characters you may not have noticed on your own. Then take you inside to learn more about the space up close.

Our Best of Milan Tour shines a light on those special places that make Milan a city like no other. With groups of only 15 people or fewer throughout, your experience will be intimate, while your local tour guide will be easy to chat with.

Venice is a legendary city with a charm and atmosphere all its own. The city was constructed on more than 100 islands connected by a series of canals, most of which are lined with gorgeous palaces, beautiful churches, and all sorts of impressive architecture. While the city isn’t huge, it is packed with pedestrian-only streets and quaint, winding alleys that will keep you exploring for days. The city is very popular with tourists year-round, so you certainly won’t be the only travelers walking through the streets with camera in hand. This being Italy, the cuisine in Venice is delicious, and we can especially recommend the Cicchetti of Venice tour. Cicchetti are Venetian tapas, and this tour will introduce you to some of the city’s most iconic eateries and its most delicious recipes. If it’s your first time in Venice, we can organize a tour to show you all the most important sites. And since no trip to the city of canals is complete without a boat ride, we offer a number of ways for you to get a new point of view of the city and its magnificent architecture. It’s easy to while away your time in Venice, discovering new secrets around every corner.
