Prizren

Travel and LeisureFodorsUSA TodayNew York TimesNational GeographicWashington PostVogue
The real Balkans.
Located in the heart of Balkans, Prizren is a town of opposites. Dating back to the 11th century, Prizren has for a long time been home to Albanian, Serbian and Turkish communities, and retains many unique customs and cultures. The layout and architecture of the town reflects all this, with beautiful, untouched mosques and churches scattered around the town. Once the capital of Kosovo, Prizren is still regarded as the country's cultural center. During the Yugoslavian era, this town was on the outskirts of the country, and known for its military training base. Divided by the River Bistrica into two banks, Prizren is a great place to indulge in historical sites as well as walks along the water and on the bridges.

Things to do in Prizren

Prizren is a charming city to delve into. We're happy to help you get to know it with a private walking tour, although the city also works well as a base from which to explore the rest of Kosovo, as reflected in a private walking tour we offer of both Prizren and Pristina (with private transfers in between). When we send you your customized itinerary you will be able to choose additional excursions to include in your vacation package or consider adding later.

What are Prizren's prices like?
You can roughly expect to spend around $8 for a quick lunch and beer, $15 for dinner, and $2-8 for museums and landmarks.
How can I get around Prizren?
Prizren is relatively small city, and most of the main attractions are within walking distance of the hotels we work with. We don't recommend using the city's public transportation, but the taxis are cheap, and you can get around the city with them for less than $5.
What are typical opening hours in Prizren?
Most shops are open from 9 AM, while most galleries, museums, and other attractions open at 10 AM. Museums are closed Mondays. The malls outside the city's suburbs are generally open from 10 AM to 8 PM.
Is Prizren safe?
Prizren is safe, especially for tourists, but keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas.
Does Prizren have options for people with dietary restrictions?
Prizren's cuisine is rich in fresh vegetables, so while the country has few vegetarians, finding vegetarian/vegan options isn't difficult. We recommend seeking out Ajvar, a tangy eggplant and red bell pepper spread famous in the Balkans, especially Kosovo.
How long should I stay in Prizren?
We recommend spending two nights in Prizren, in order to enjoy a day trip to Prishtina, and still have a day to explore Prizren and its surroundings.
