A city of contrasts and contradictions

One of the world’s oldest cities, Yerevan may combine ancient stone churches with grand Soviet architecture, but the city is a joy to explore, as grand squares and hilltop vistas give way to pedestrian zones and lush parkways full of cafes, concert stages, and ice cream vendors. As the city cools, it comes alive, and with its many music venues and nightclubs, stays wide awake through the night. Armenia’s largest city by far, Yerevan is an excellent base from which to explore the rest of the country, then recharge in the evening. The city’s hills and rooftops provide excellent views of Mt. Ararat, overlooking the city and crowned with ice, even in late summer.

Route for Yerevan tour
For a marriage of the city’s culture, traditions, and views, visit the Cascade. An Art Deco take on Babylon’s Hanging Gardens and symbol of the return of the Armenian diaspora, this art museum funded by an Armenian-American is a unique sight. Each floor is covered by a garden and a staircase, while elevators run inside, between galleries, creating a massive series of steps, and offering the city’s best vistas. Even the neighboring parks are full of creative works of art, to say nothing of the city’s many other museums, or the clubs that play host to an avant-garde music scene. Armenia is home to much of the region’s best and most unique foods, and even Yerevan’s best restaurants are surprisingly affordable.

It was a very organized trip. From airport pick up to walking tours and visiting Unesco sites, it was worth every penny.

How expensive is Yerevan?
The dollar goes far in Armenia. A quick lunch with a drink costs around $5-10, dinners $15-20, and museums about $5-10. A one-way trip on public transportation is around $0.20-0.40.
How can I get around Yerevan?
Yerevan's center is quite compact and walkable, and you're unlikely to have to use much public transportation. The city features subways, buses, trolleybuses, and "marshrutkas," privately owned minibuses that follow set routes, and depart whenever they're full (the wait is usually short). The price for a one-way trip is around $0.20-0.40.
What are regular opening hours?
Most places are open from 9 AM to 6 PM, but some cafes and restaurants open later, around 11 AM or 12 PM. Sops are open from 10 AM to between 7 to 10 PM. Museums are galleries, and some street markets, are closed Mondays. The city center has many 24/7 grocery stores.
Is Yerevan safe?
Like the rest of Armenia, Yerevan is safe for tourists, any time of day or night. The people are kind and welcoming, and even pickpocketing is rare.
Does Yerevan have options for dietary restrictions?
Armenian cuisine in general is very diverse, and you will find vegan/vegetarian options almost anywhere in the city.
How long should I spend in Yerevan?
Yerevan's center is small, but the city is a great base for day trips. We recommend three nights, which gives you time for two day trips.
