Frequently Asked Questions about travel to United Kingdom

Do US citizens need a visa for the UK?

Contrary to what you might have heard, you don't need a visa, but you do need to register for the UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), at a cost of £16. This is the UK's equivalent of the US ESTA, which British and many other countries' citizens are required to apply for when they visit the USA. Please only use the official (gov.uk) website to apply, there are lots of scammy sites that will charge you extra for processing the application. Once authorized, this lasts for 2 years or until your passport expires. Applications can take up to three working days but it usually takes just a few hours.

What's the best way to get to the UK?

Usually we answer this question with 'by plane' but the UK is the only European country with regular transatlantic crossings by ship, the Queen Mary 2, which take 7 nights. Ideal if you have time to spare and a fear of flying. Most of our guests however choose to fly and with over 30 direct flights a day between the US and the UK, there's plenty of choice – you don't even have to start in London! If you do you'll most likely be landing at Heathrow or less likely, Gatwick airports.
