Sicily's Offshore Delights
The Aeolian Islands archipelago is a combination of hyper-local and understated luxury.

Sicily, Italy's largest island, has some surprises hidden just off its north-eastern shore. The Aeolian Islands is an archipelago of volcanic islands. The largest and busiest of the islands is Lipari and makes for a convenient base, but Salina is worthy of consideration if you're looking for a more peaceful and relaxing time.
From either Lipari or Salina you can day trip to rest of the archipelago, which can be done by ferry, or better with a private or small group boat tour, with the timings all taken care of for you. Two of the islands are active volcanoes, Stromboli and Vulcano. Panarea, popular with the jetset, makes for a pleasant place to wander, and the two most remote islands, Alicudi and Filicudi, are rural idylls.
