Etna

Travel and LeisureFodorsUSA TodayNew York TimesNational GeographicWashington PostVogue
Dominating the Sicilian skyline, still-active Etna is a force of nature.
One of the world's largest and most active volcanoes, Mount Etna makes a great base for exploring Sicily. The volcano's views, ancient villages, and vineyards have made the mountain and its surroundings a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guests here stay in farmstays on the eastern slope, closer to the sea. This area is ideal for day trips higher up the volcano, as well as to nearby wineries, and the towns of Taormina and Catania.
Route for Etna tour
Ascending the volcano, you'll find inactive volcanic cones surrounded by ancient lava flows. From Mt. Etna's upper reaches, you can see the whole of Sicily, the Aeolian Islands, and Calabria, the toe of mainland Italy's boot. You can also head the opposite direction and visit Taormina, a seaside town beloved by international film stars, with its scenic beaches, Greek ruins, picturesque medieval streets, and spectacular views of the coast and Mt. Etna. Nearby you'll find Catania. Once the capital of Sicily, the city is home to more Baroque architecture than nearly anywhere else in Italy. With its famed fish market, scenic views, and ornate architecture, there's plenty to see in this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Things to do in Etna

Naturally, a stay on the verdant slopes of Mount Etna isn't complete without venturing up the volcano, an experience we can offer with a guide. We recommend staying at an "agriturismi," one of Mt. Etna's farm-stays, which allow you to savor Sicily's local traditions and hospitality, as well as a deep sense of cultural and historical heritage. Most agriturismi are historic wineries, so in addition to good homemade cooking with local, organic ingredients, you can get a tour, and enjoy tastings. When we send you your customized itinerary you will be able to choose additional excursions to include in your vacation package or consider adding later.
