Venice is a legendary city with a charm and atmosphere all its own. The city was constructed on more than 100 islands connected by a series of canals, most of which are lined with gorgeous palaces, beautiful churches, and all sorts of impressive architecture. While the city isn’t huge, it is packed with pedestrian-only streets and quaint, winding alleys that will keep you exploring for days. The city is very popular with tourists year-round, so you certainly won’t be the only travelers walking through the streets with camera in hand. This being Italy, the cuisine in Venice is delicious, and we can especially recommend the Cicchetti of Venice tour. Cicchetti are Venetian tapas, and this tour will introduce you to some of the city’s most iconic eateries and its most delicious recipes. If it’s your first time in Venice, we can organize a tour to show you all the most important sites. And since no trip to the city of canals is complete without a boat ride, we offer a number of ways for you to get a new point of view of the city and its magnificent architecture. It’s easy to while away your time in Venice, discovering new secrets around every corner.

While today it might be best known as a summer retreat for Hollywood film stars like George Clooney, Lake Como has actually been famous since the age of the Roman empire. In fact the seminal historians Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger were natives of Como. The lake gained international acclaim between the 18th and the 19th centuries, first with the triumph of the so-called “villa civilization,” and then with the development of the tourist elite and international celebrities. As a result, Lake Como became an obligatory stop for travelers and writers visiting Italy. The long list of those who have written about the lake include Bourget, De Musset, Longfellow, Stendhal and Flaubert.

Suggestion to explore on your own

Swimming in Lake Como is a very popular activity for locals. Every village has a favorite spot, sometimes equipped with showers and a snack bar. We recommend avoiding the southern shores of the lake, where the water is more stagnant. Instead you can use a local “lido,” which generally has private swimming pools and a bar or restaurant. Your local JayWay contact will recommend several places to visit.

As the northern-most of the Cinque Terre villages, Monterosso-al-Mare (literally the red mountain by the sea) is the most accessible of five. Road, rail and ferry links, and a wide choice of hotels make this an excellent base for visiting all the other villages and neighboring towns as well. This choice and accessibility comes at a price – it is the least pretty of the five. Yet that will hardly seem to matter when you're looking out to sea, or hiking the steep trail to Vernazza, the next village. Monterosso has the largest and best equipped beach of all the Cinque Terre villages so if some sun worship is on your vacation agenda, this is the perfect spot. As well as the opportunity to hike in the Cinque Terre national park between some of the villages you can also take the regular trains or if seas allow, the ferry service to the other villages. Private and boat day trips provide another way to admire the villages from their most natural aspect, the sea.

Suggestion to explore on your own

If you like swimming, you have more than a few options on the coast. In warmer weather we recommend the tiny harbor of Vernazza and Riomaggiore. The only equipped beach nearby is in Monterosso, and this one is suitable for families as well. So grab your towel and maybe a focaccia and a drink or gelato. As usual, the best suggestion is follow the locals!

Pesto: The Green Gold of Ligurian Gastronomy

Suggestion to explore on your own

Pesto, one of the flagships of Italian cuisine, originates in Genoa. To be more precise, it comes from the tiny village of Pra, whose hills apparently produce the only basil suitable for making the best basil after blending with pecorino (and/or parmigiano reggiano, opening endless discussions among locals and chefs). Discover it for yourself in the area's many delicious local restaurants.

Florence hosts some of the most interesting and popular museums in the world. The Accademia is most famous for Michaelangelo's David, and the Uffizi Gallery has must-see works from the Renaissance. Thanks to the quality and amount of artwork in each museum, we suggest visiting one per day, ideally with a private guide (which will also allow you to skip the long lines) in combination with a walking tour of the historical center.

Other great museums include the Palazzo Pitti, a magnificent Renaissance complex, and the largest museum complex in Florence. It contains the interesting Museum of Costume and Fashion. The Jewish Museum documents the history of the Jews in Florence over the centuries and their relationship with the city. The collection includes furniture, textile, and silver used for ceremonies between the end of the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Beaches and Islands of the Amalfi Coast

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

The Amalfi Coast is among the most beautiful and famous seaside areas in the world. But it can actually be tricky to access the beaches. Locals like to reach secret spots by scooter, and jump into the turquoise waters right from the rocks. For something more convenient, we recommend the small beach in Positano, which also offers a choice of good seafront restaurants.

The best way to enjoy the area is to rent a private boat or join a small group excursion, visiting wonderful beaches and tiny grottos amid clear emerald water, and enjoying a tasty onboard meal and refreshments.

1 Night in Matera

A striking, unique sight, legend has it that Matera was once known as “Meteoron,” since its slopes pockmarked with caves resembled a meteor shower. While Matera has a more modern section, its draw is the Sassi, likely one of the oldest continually inhabited places on earth. Sassi is a must-see, honeycombed with homes carved directly into the rock, widening ancient caves over the millennia. This rock-hewn district has barely a tree in sight, though it does have a cathedral looming above everything. The caves are thought to have been constantly used as homes for 3-9,000 years. As the locals say, "man came here and never left." Once seen as the poorest part of Italy, the caves were emptied out and modernized, so that all cave accommodations are completely modern. The caves aren’t the only reason Matera is the 2019 European Capital of Culture alongside Plovdiv in Bulgaria. The town is known for its unique dishes, which still use fresh local ingredients, such as flowers that grow in the valley below, or a unique slow-baked bread that stays fresh for a week. The university and conservatory mean there are ample events to attend, as does the nearly year-long jazz festival, and the festival devoted to women’s fiction. The town’s famed ceramic rooster whistles make for great souvenirs. Many caves were used for churches since the earliest days of Christianity, and now serve as ancient Jerusalem in films such as "The Passion of the Christ" or the recent "Ben-Hur" remake, although you can also spot the town in "Wonder Woman," "No Time to Die," and many Italian classics.

Lecce is the most important town on the Salentine peninsula, the very heel of Italy. The town's rich history, stretching back to the times of the ancient Greeks, is one of the main attractions. The centerpiece of the old town is a 2nd century Roman amphitheater. The amphitheater was only rediscovered in the early 1900s during construction work for the Bank of Italy building and remains half buried. It is now used for concerts. Much of Lecce's historical center's architecture dates from the Baroque period and has earned the city the nickname 'Florence of the South'. These beauties stand in stark contrast to some of the edifices erected during Mussolini's reign.

Cooking Class and Social Dinner Small Group Tour

PSA Lecce: Pasticciotto, Salsa, Antipasti

Please ask your travel advisor for the cost to add this to your package

Being your first night in the city, our suggestion is to start your Lecce experience at one of the excellent restaurants all over the city, serving traditional local dishes. Once you choose your venue, ask for Antipasti della Casa to order an array of local dishes such as cooked seasonal greens, chicory, cheese, and bread. After that, you can continue with local favorites - some pasta (orecchiette is the one you want to go for). At the end of the meal it is typical to freshen up with some negroamaro (a traditional liquor) and a pasticciotto (a pastry stuffed with custard, better known as sweet cloud of goodness).

If you're up for some learning and activity, we can arrange for a cooking class with dinner included. You will learn to make your own pasta (which is quite big in this region), sauces, sweets, and of course, enjoy your homemade meal!
