Croatia from Top to Toe

This sample 11-day (10 nights) itinerary covers Zagreb, Rovinj, Plitvice, Split, Hvar, and Dubrovnik. It takes you from the tip of Croatia to the toe, through interesting cities, beautiful beaches and stunning natural scenery. You'll enjoy the contrast of Croatia's buzzy Central European-style capital, the gourmet pleasures of Istria and the laid-back delights of the Dalmatian coast. We've planned the itinerary to give you just enough time in the most remarkable destinations, while seeing the rest of the country on easy trips between stops. The start of the tour is by rental car, then by public transportation on high speed ferries once the car is no longer needed. If you'd prefer not to self-drive, instead of renting a car we can arrange for private transfers instead.

This is the ideal summer vacation. All of our tours are custom, and this is just a sample meant to give an idea for what our trips are like, and the opportunities our destinations provide.
One of our team in the region will be available to you during and leading up to the trip to answer any questions and arrange local services. You will receive access to your Guest Page, with its information on the best these destinations have to offer, including things to see and do, and other inside tips from restaurant recommendations to tipping advice. Upon arrival we will provide you with a local cell phone that you can use to contact our employee (who you will meet in person) throughout your trip. In all of our destinations, we offer a variety of memorable 3-5 star accommodation options, including boutique hotels, charming B&Bs, and spacious apartments. With our firsthand experience, we can ensure they are all clean, comfortable, and centrally located, with local ambience.

1 Night in Zagreb

1 Night in Zagreb

1 Night in Zagreb

Zagreb is a city where different worlds have long come together. Situated at the intersection of ancient trade routes between the Adriatic and Central Europe, it is a cosmopolitan place with various cultural influences evident in the cuisine and architecture at home in any Austro-Hungarian city. You’ll love exploring the open-air markets, impressive buildings, peaceful parks, and many delicious restaurants. Just strolling through the unique combination of medieval towers, 19th century palaces, ancient churches, and market squares is a pleasure, but there’s much more to do here. After exploring all that the city has to offer with a local guide, you’ll be able to make the most of your time. You could also take a guided bike tour around the city, to get a little exercise as you experience the city. But you’ll also want to explore some of the region surrounding Zagreb. As a longer day trip, you could see the delightful Trakoscan, a neo-Gothic castle sitting on a hilltop, surrounded by a romantic English style park with exotic trees and an artificial lake. While you’re there you can also stop in Varazdin to appreciate its ornate baroque architecture.

See the sights: Private city walking tour

Please ask your travel advisor for the cost to add this to your package

Zagreb is a city of green parks and walks, with many places to visit in the beautiful surrounding. It is made for strolling the streets, drinking coffee in the almost permanently full cafes, popping into museums and galleries and enjoying the theatres, concerts, cinema and music. So we recommend you get acquainted straightaway, with this two-hour private city walking tour. You’ll see the major sights, including Upper Town, St. Mark’s Church, the Parliament, Zagreb Cathedral, Dolac Market and the Stone Gate. Along the way you’ll stop for coffee and ride a scenic funicular! Your personal guide will pick you up and drop you off at your accommodation.

Unique Museums: Museum of Broken Relationships, Arts & Crafts Museum

Suggestion to explore on your own

There are numerous museums to visit in Zagreb, but two of the most unique are the Museum of Broken Relationships and the Arts & Crafts Museum. We recommend visiting one or both today. The Museum of Broken Relationships grew from a traveling exhibition revolving around the concept of failed relationships and their ruins. Unlike ‘destructive’ self-help instructions for recovery from failed loves, the museum offers a chance to overcome an emotional collapse through creation: by contributing to the collection. The Museum of Arts and Crafts was founded in 1880 as one of the first institutions of its kind in Europe. The museum was conceived with the intention to create a “collection of samples for master craftsmen and artists who need to re-enhance the production of articles of daily use.” Here you’ll find a rich collection of local cultural and historical creations.

Rovinj used to go by Rovigno, and to Italian-speakers it still does. This city was once part of the Republic of Venice, which is evident from the street names in Italian to the Venetian architectural flourishes, such as the bell tower that crowns the town. This laid-back spot has a full cultural calendar, with numerous festivals taking place in the warmer months. We’ll help you get to know the local culture, with possible activities like a local wine tasting, a fish cooking masterclass with a local chef, or a truffle hunting adventure in nearby Croatia. Then, to work up an appetite for your next delicious meal, you could rent bikes and cruise through the breathtaking Zlatni Rt Park. You’ll definitely want to visit the local market too. History buffs will love visiting the local cultural heritage museum, which gives great insight into the region. When you’re ready to get in the car, a day trip to Pula is always fun. This busy port town hosts a large market packed with delectable local specialities, and also boasts a Roman amphitheater. You could even arrange a full-day private tour through the gorgeous region of Istria, where more delights await you inland.

After your sight seeing stops, you'll probably arrive in Rovinj in the late afternoon, perfect to check in to your accommodation. Relax after your drive with an evening stroll around Old Town and the lively harbor area.

Day 3

Day 3 - Your First Full Day in Rovinj

Get to know Rovinj with an expert guide

Please ask your travel advisor for the cost to add this to your package

On your first day in Rovinj we recommend getting a feel for the city with a private walking tour. This two-hour tour will be led by a local guide who knows all the ins and outs of the place. You’ll see all the main attractions including the St. Euphemia Church, the town clock, and Balbi’s arch. St. Euphemia Church is a stunning example of Baroque architecture that dominates Rovinj’s Old Town, as it is built on the top of the hill. Inside you’ll see the preserved body of St. Euphemia from the 6th century. This orientational tour will introduce you to the rich history of Rovinj and all of Istria, as well as Italy’s influence on the region.

Let's go truffle hunting!

Please ask your travel advisor for the cost to add this to your package

Croatian cuisine is mostly associated with seafood, but local truffles also play a big role. These savoury mushrooms are some of the most sought-after ingredients in the world. Today we recommend a four-hour truffle hunting adventure near lake Butoniga in central Istria, about 45 minutes from Rovinj. You’ll be picked up from your accommodation and driven to the area, where you’ll start with a welcome drink and a feast of truffle products. Then, accompanied by a truffle hunting dog, you’ll hike to locations where truffles grow in nature, and with a little luck find some of your own. At the end of the day you’ll head back to your host’s house for a traditional dish with your fresh truffles and a glass of Istrian wine.

Private Istria Tour

Please ask your travel advisor for the cost to add this to your package

Istria is a region of romance and myth. It’s also so beautiful that it’s often compared with Italy’s Tuscany. But in order to experience the best of Istria, you’ve got to get outside of Rovinj. To do so, we recommend this private full-day Istria tour. From the hills to the coasts you’ll see the best of the region, and also taste some of the local cuisine. This is a suggestion for a private tour while you can easily explore the region on your own with the car you have rented.

Day 5 - Traveling to Split

The direct journey time is a little under three hours but there are some interesting stops on your way from Plitvice to Split today. Our first suggestion would be to stop and visit Zadar, a town that's famous for its unique sea organ. The town of Sibenik is also close to the route and a quick detour to visit the UNESCO-listed cathedral might entice you. The other stop we recommend is Krka National Park, another waterfall-rich park on the way to Split. If you make any of these stops you will probably arrive in Split in the later afternoon, a perfect time to check in at your accommodation.

1 Night in Split

1 Night in Split

1 Night in Split

The Roman Emperor Diocletian made Split his home in the 4th Century AD, building a vast palace complex on the waterfront that stands to this day. In fact several of the accommodation options we offer in Split are nestled inside its ancient walls. These days there is an embankment in front of Diocletian's palace but the water used to go right up to the main wall. It's on this man-made strip of land that you'll find the Riva, a pedestrian promenade bustling with life. Split's UNESCO listed Old Town is contained within these old walls and is a pedestrian-only maze that it is quite easy, but fun, to get lost in. Who know what romantic hidden cafés you might find in one of the narrow streets and alleyways? To get the best out of your time in Split, however, we recommend taking a tour with a local guide. Split is very well connected for flights, with an international airport a half hour drive away and is a popular stopping point for our guests on their way between Dubrovnik and the islands of Hvar, Vis, or Korcula, all easily reached by a ferry from Split's port. If you base yourself in Split for a few days, you will find it is also perfect located for visits to some of Croatia's most stunning national parks.
