Croatia from Top to Toe

This sample 11-day (10 nights) itinerary covers Zagreb, Rovinj, Plitvice, Split, Hvar, and Dubrovnik. It takes you from the tip of Croatia to the toe, through interesting cities, beautiful beaches and stunning natural scenery. You'll enjoy the contrast of Croatia's buzzy Central European-style capital, the gourmet pleasures of Istria and the laid-back delights of the Dalmatian coast. We've planned the itinerary to give you just enough time in the most remarkable destinations, while seeing the rest of the country on easy trips between stops. The start of the tour is by rental car, then by public transportation on high speed ferries once the car is no longer needed. If you'd prefer not to self-drive, instead of renting a car we can arrange for private transfers instead.

This is the ideal summer vacation. All of our tours are custom, and this is just a sample meant to give an idea for what our trips are like, and the opportunities our destinations provide.
One of our team in the region will be available to you during and leading up to the trip to answer any questions and arrange local services. You will receive access to your Guest Page, with its information on the best these destinations have to offer, including things to see and do, and other inside tips from restaurant recommendations to tipping advice. Upon arrival we will provide you with a local cell phone that you can use to contact our employee (who you will meet in person) throughout your trip. In all of our destinations, we offer a variety of memorable 3-5 star accommodation options, including boutique hotels, charming B&Bs, and spacious apartments. With our firsthand experience, we can ensure they are all clean, comfortable, and centrally located, with local ambience.

1 Night in Zagreb

1 Night in Zagreb

Zagreb is a city where different worlds have long come together. Situated at the intersection of ancient trade routes between the Adriatic and Central Europe, it is a cosmopolitan place with various cultural influences evident in the cuisine and architecture at home in any Austro-Hungarian city. You’ll love exploring the open-air markets, impressive buildings, peaceful parks, and many delicious restaurants. Just strolling through the unique combination of medieval towers, 19th century palaces, ancient churches, and market squares is a pleasure, but there’s much more to do here. After exploring all that the city has to offer with a local guide, you’ll be able to make the most of your time. You could also take a guided bike tour around the city, to get a little exercise as you experience the city. But you’ll also want to explore some of the region surrounding Zagreb. As a longer day trip, you could see the delightful Trakoscan, a neo-Gothic castle sitting on a hilltop, surrounded by a romantic English style park with exotic trees and an artificial lake. While you’re there you can also stop in Varazdin to appreciate its ornate baroque architecture.

Day 2 - Traveling to Rovinj by Rental Car

On this day you will drive from Zagreb to Rovinj which is about a 3-hour drive. On the way we suggest to stop in Opatija, a slice of Vienna by the seaside. 2 Nights in Rovinj

Rovinj used to go by Rovigno, and to Italian-speakers it still does. This city was once part of the Republic of Venice, which is evident from the street names in Italian to the Venetian architectural flourishes, such as the bell tower that crowns the town. This laid-back spot has a full cultural calendar, with numerous festivals taking place in the warmer months. We’ll help you get to know the local culture, with possible activities like a local wine tasting, a fish cooking masterclass with a local chef, or a truffle hunting adventure in nearby Croatia. Then, to work up an appetite for your next delicious meal, you could rent bikes and cruise through the breathtaking Zlatni Rt Park. You’ll definitely want to visit the local market too. History buffs will love visiting the local cultural heritage museum, which gives great insight into the region. When you’re ready to get in the car, a day trip to Pula is always fun. This busy port town hosts a large market packed with delectable local specialities, and also boasts a Roman amphitheater. You could even arrange a full-day private tour through the gorgeous region of Istria, where more delights await you inland.

Day 2 - Arrival in Rovinj

After your sightseeing stops, you'll probably arrive in Rovinj in the late afternoon, a good time to check in to your accommodation. Relax after your drive with an evening stroll around Old Town and the lively harbor area.

Local Flavors

Suggestion to explore on your own

Looking to get into the true local spirit of Rovinj? At the city market square you can find fresh fruit and vegetable from local producers, as well as some Istrian specialties: olive oil, truffles, herbs, asparagus and local brandy. There is also a fish market, butcher’s shop and bakery there, having fresh goods daily. The best time to visit the market is early in the morning when locals are buying their vegetables and fruits for the day, and the cooks from the restaurants are searching for the best ingredients. Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and the colorful place, talk with the locals and buy some fresh ingredients. You will take great photos and have a wonderful time.

Experience Istria

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

Istria is a region of romance and myth, as well as an impressive countryside and clearly deep history. With its hilltop towns, cuisine, and ethnic Italians, it's clear at a glance why it's often compared to Tuscany. In order to experience the best of Istria, you’ve got to get outside of Rovinj. From the hills to the coasts you’ll see the best of the region and you shouldn't miss an opportunity to taste some of the delicious local cuisine. If you decide to take the private tour of the region, your driver will pick you up at your accommodation and drive you through Istria, and your guide will offer some suggestions so you can customize your sightseeing. You can also rent a car and explore on your own, join a group tour, or even have us book a guide to ride with you in a rental for a day. The stops we recommend most are Pula, with its ancient Roman amphitheater, and the hill towns of Motovun and Groznjan. All three spots have a charm of their own and really show off the best of the region's architecture, landscape, and cuisine. Either way you will surely be impressed with Istria's beauty.

Istria Private Tour

Istria Private Tour

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

Explore the Istrian Peninsula, a beautiful, bilingual part of Croatia that invites comparisons to Tuscany, with its vineyards, truffles, scenic hilltop towns, and Italian-speaking population. This private, tailor-made tour lets you focus on the parts of Istria (and its history and cuisine) that interest you the most. Those interested in history, legends, and Slavic mythology, with its giants, dragons, and witches, could visit the hilltop town of Motovun, the ancient port of Pula (with its Roman colosseum), etc. The guide can focus on medieval history, taking you to sites such as the ruins of the fortified medieval town of Dvigrad, or the castle at Savicenta. If you would like to go far from the beaten path and delve into hidden villages where time stands still, the guide can happily present well-preserved towns and villages such as Draguc and Hum, and the natural beauty that surrounds them. Naturally, these places and interests can be mixed and matched, with the guide's expert advice. Free time for lunch at a traditional restaurant is included, although the cost of lunch is not covered. For an additional fee, a wine tasting can be added.

Day 4 - Traveling to Plitvice by Rental Car

Today we suggest an early start. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Plitvice Lakes National Park is about 4 hours away and you will want to arrive there by lunchtime so you can spend your whole afternoon exploring this magnificent natural wonder. Entrance fees to the national park must be booked online at least two days in advance. If you're looking for somewhere to stop along the way, then we would suggest an early lunch in the seaside town of Opatija, it has a style quite different to Rovinj, with a Vienna-on-the-Sea vibe.

1 Night in Split

The Roman Emperor Diocletian made Split his home in the 4th Century AD, building a vast palace complex on the waterfront that stands to this day. In fact several of the accommodation options we offer in Split are nestled inside its ancient walls. These days there is an embankment in front of Diocletian's palace but the water used to go right up to the main wall. It's on this man-made strip of land that you'll find the Riva, a pedestrian promenade bustling with life. Split's UNESCO listed Old Town is contained within these old walls and is a pedestrian-only maze that it is quite easy, but fun, to get lost in. Who know what romantic hidden cafés you might find in one of the narrow streets and alleyways? To get the best out of your time in Split, however, we recommend taking a tour with a local guide. Split is very well connected for flights, with an international airport a half hour drive away and is a popular stopping point for our guests on their way between Dubrovnik and the islands of Hvar, Vis, or Korcula, all easily reached by a ferry from Split's port. If you base yourself in Split for a few days, you will find it is also perfect located for visits to some of Croatia's most stunning national parks.

Half Day Kayaking and Lokrum Island Group Tour

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

See Dubrovnik and paradisiacal Lokrum Island from a new angle, with the help of a private guide and your own sea kayak. No experience is required, and the kayaks are equipped with waterproof chambers so you don't need to worry about soaking your camera! You'll leave the town's port, getting a scenic perspective of the historic city walls as you paddle past. Soon you'll arrive at Lokrum's hidden Betina Cave, an excellent opportunity for swimming and snorkeling. Lunch will be provided at the beautiful Lacroma, a restaurant in Lokrum's peaceful center. Strolling around, you can visit the island's botanical garden (with its 500 types of plants), museum, Game of Thrones center, and much more. With no residents or cars, the island is always calm and quiet, save for the cicadas and peacocks!
