It is a must-visit spot for anyone wanting to soak up the city's authentic vibe. And then there's the secret garden M'arden – a hidden gem nestled within the ancient city walls. It's the kind of place that whispers tranquility, inviting you to escape the hustle and bustle. As the night falls, the garden transforms into a magical retreat, making it a perfect spot for those seeking a peaceful and enchanting experience. The Roman Emperor Diocletian made Split his home in the 4th Century AD, building a vast palace complex on the waterfront that stands to this day. In fact several of the accommodation options we offer in Split are nestled inside its ancient walls. These days there is an embankment in front of Diocletian's palace but the water used to go right up to the main wall. It's on this man-made strip of land that you'll find the Riva, a pedestrian promenade bustling with life. Split's UNESCO listed Old Town is contained within these old walls and is a pedestrian-only maze that it is quite easy, but fun, to get lost in. Who know what romantic hidden cafés you might find in one of the narrow streets and alleyways? To get the best out of your time in Split, however, we recommend taking a tour with a local guide. Split is very well connected for flights, with an international airport a half hour drive away and is a popular stopping point for our guests on their way between Dubrovnik and the islands of Hvar, Vis, or Korcula, all easily reached by a ferry from Split's port. If you base yourself in Split for a few days, you will find it is also perfect located for visits to some of Croatia's most stunning national parks.

Hike Around Marjan

Suggestion to explore on your own

A short walk from Split's Old Town along the Riva promenade, Marjan Hill is a natural treat. When the sun shines, we recommend visiting for a quiet break, immersing yourself in the scents of pine and the sea. Covering the peninsula just west of Split's historic core, this forested park has many scenic viewpoints and paths. Amidst the trees and vistas are historic areas, such as a Jewish graveyard with over 700 gravestones. Be sure to check out the hill's views of the city, and the mountains and islands looming beyond. At the hill’s edge, you can find hidden beaches popular with locals. If you’re looking to focus on the beaches, we recommend renting a bike, and biking along the coast and through the forest, although you can also kayak between them, with a rental from one of the larger beaches, or as part of a four-hour group tour that we offer.

Day 8 - Traveling to Plitvice by Rental Car

If you're planning to explore the park the following morning and want to fill the day there are plenty of potential stops, only a little off the route. Nature lovers will want to stop at the Krka National Park to see the stunning lakes and waterfalls, followed by lunch at Skradin on a picturesque inland bay. If you like wine, we can arrange for a special tasting at the renowned Bibich winery in the hills above Skradin, which is suddenly famous since Anthony Bourdain paid the place a visit. Stunningly gorgeous is the only way to describe Plitvice, Croatia's first national park. The colors of the lakes range from azure to turquoise, and the many hues in between are based on the mineral content and angle of the sun. While it's easy enough to explore on your own by following marked trails, we can easily arrange for a private guide to show you around the very best bits, especially if you're looking to get the most out of your time in the park.

Rovinj used to go by Rovigno, and to Italian-speakers it still does. This city was once part of the Republic of Venice, which is evident from the street names in Italian to the Venetian architectural flourishes, such as the bell tower that crowns the town. This laid-back spot has a full cultural calendar, with numerous festivals taking place in the warmer months. We’ll help you get to know the local culture, with possible activities like a local wine tasting, a fish cooking masterclass with a local chef, or a truffle hunting adventure in nearby Croatia. Then, to work up an appetite for your next delicious meal, you could rent bikes and cruise through the breathtaking Zlatni Rt Park. You’ll definitely want to visit the local market too. History buffs will love visiting the local cultural heritage museum, which gives great insight into the region. When you’re ready to get in the car, a day trip to Pula is always fun. This busy port town hosts a large market packed with delectable local specialities, and also boasts a Roman amphitheater. You could even arrange a full-day private tour through the gorgeous region of Istria, where more delights await you inland.

Istrian Self-Drive Tour

Suggestion to explore on your own

If you have traveled to Rovinj in a rental car, a self-driving tour of the surrounding region of Istria is an excellent way to spend a day. This is a place of romance and myth that is often compared with Tuscany. From the hills to the coasts you can see the best of the region on a pleasant drive, and also taste some of the local cuisine. The stops we recommend most are Pula, with its ancient Roman amphitheater, and the hill towns of Motovun and Groznjan. All three spots have a charm of their own and really show off the best of the region's architecture, landscape, and cuisine.

Bike the Golden Cape

Suggestion to explore on your own

Today’s a good day for a bike ride, don’t you think? We suggest exploring “Zlatni Rt,” also known as the "Golden Cape Forest Park," which is closed to motor vehicles. About less than a mile from the center of Rovinj, the park is easy to get to, and you can rent your bikes in town and ride there. You’ll be in for a scenic ride through gorgeous scenery. The main road goes directly through the park, and there are beaches to visit on the other side of the thick woods. Keep an eye out for the local flora and fauna. In the summer there are numerous restaurants in the park where you can stop for a drink or something to eat. Ask at your hotel for rental advice: some hotels have free bike rental for guests, or discounts with rental places.

This tour is crafted for travelers seeking to explore beyond the tourist path and uncover hidden gems cherished by locals. As a curious food enthusiast, you will have the opportunity to sample unique delicacies such as milza alla veneziana or nervetti—bite-and-go cuisine that goes beyond typical street food.
