After Your Tour: City Walls, Cable Car and Lokrum Island

Suggestion to explore on your own

As well as taking a short walking tour of Dubrovnik's old town with a private guide, which will tell you all about the city's history and get you oriented, there are a few other must-dos when in this breathtaking city and all involve getting a different perspective on the magnificent walled Old Town.

Continue your day in Dubrovnik after the tour with a ride on the cable car up Mount Srd' to take in the views. You'll find the bottom station of the cable car by exiting the city through the Buža Gate. Walking the circumference of the ancient city walls themselves is a way to get another view of the town. It's a bit of a climb to the top of the Minceta Tower, but highly recommended.

If you also want to see Dubrovnik from afar, then take a boat trip to Lokrum Island, an oasis of nature and tranquility just ten minutes from the Old Town harbor. This island has peacocks and monastery ruins hidden among its pine, cypress, and olive trees. You will also find a botanical garden here.

The Roman Emperor Diocletian made Split his home in the 4th Century AD, building a vast palace complex on the waterfront that stands to this day. In fact several of the accommodation options we offer in Split are nestled inside its ancient walls. These days there is an embankment in front of Diocletian's palace but the water used to go right up to the main wall. It's on this man-made strip of land that you'll find the Riva, a pedestrian promenade bustling with life. Split's UNESCO listed Old Town is contained within these old walls and is a pedestrian-only maze that it is quite easy, but fun, to get lost in. Who know what romantic hidden cafés you might find in one of the narrow streets and alleyways? To get the best out of your time in Split, however, we recommend taking a tour with a local guide. Split is very well connected for flights, with an international airport a half hour drive away and is a popular stopping point for our guests on their way between Dubrovnik and the islands of Hvar, Vis, or Korcula, all easily reached by a ferry from Split's port. If you base yourself in Split for a few days, you will find it is also perfect located for visits to some of Croatia's most stunning national parks.

Hike Around Marjan

Suggestion to explore on your own

A short walk from Split's Old Town along the Riva promenade, Marjan Hill is a natural treat. When the sun shines, we recommend visiting for a quiet break, immersing yourself in the scents of pine and the sea. Covering the peninsula just west of Split's historic core, this forested park has many scenic viewpoints and paths. Amidst the trees and vistas are historic areas, such as a Jewish graveyard with over 700 gravestones. Be sure to check out the hill's views of the city, and the mountains and islands looming beyond. At the hill’s edge, you can find hidden beaches popular with locals. If you’re looking to focus on the beaches, we recommend renting a bike, and biking along the coast and through the forest, although you can also kayak between them, with a rental from one of the larger beaches, or as part of a four-hour group tour that we offer.

Day 8 - Traveling to Plitvice by Rental Car

A rental car will be delivered for your use for the remainder of your trip. It will be a manual transmission, so let us know if you'd prefer an automatic. If you're planning to explore the park the following morning and want to fill the day there are plenty of potential stops, only a little off the route. Nature lovers will want to stop at the Krka National Park to see the stunning lakes and waterfalls, followed by lunch at Skradin on a picturesque inland bay. If you like wine, we can arrange for a special tasting at the renowned Bibich winery in the hills above Skradin, which is suddenly famous since Anthony Bourdain paid the place a visit. In Sibenik, you can visit the interesting UNESCO-listed Cathedral of St. James and then enjoy lunch at the excellent Pelegrini wine tavern next door. The colors of the lakes range from azure to turquoise and hues in between based on the mineral content and angle of the sun. While it's easy enough to explore on your own by following marked trails, we can optionally arrange for a private guide to show you around, if you're looking to get the most from your time in the park.

Rovinj used to go by Rovigno, and to Italian-speakers it still does. This city was once part of the Republic of Venice, which is evident from the street names in Italian to the Venetian architectural flourishes, such as the bell tower that crowns the town. This laid-back spot has a full cultural calendar, with numerous festivals taking place in the warmer months. We’ll help you get to know the local culture, with possible activities like a local wine tasting, a fish cooking masterclass with a local chef, or a truffle hunting adventure in nearby Croatia. Then, to work up an appetite for your next delicious meal, you could rent bikes and cruise through the breathtaking Zlatni Rt Park. You’ll definitely want to visit the local market too. History buffs will love visiting the local cultural heritage museum, which gives great insight into the region. When you’re ready to get in the car, a day trip to Pula is always fun. This busy port town hosts a large market packed with delectable local specialities, and also boasts a Roman amphitheater. You could even arrange a full-day private tour through the gorgeous region of Istria, where more delights await you inland.

If you have traveled to Rovinj in a rental car, a self-driving tour of the surrounding region of Istria is an excellent way to spend a day. This is a place of romance and myth that is often compared with Tuscany. From the hills to the coasts you can see the best of the region on a pleasant drive, and also taste some of the local cuisine. The stops we recommend most are Pula, with its ancient Roman amphitheater, and the hill towns of Motovun and Groznjan. All three spots have a charm of their own and really show off the best of the region's architecture, landscape and cuisine.

The main road goes directly through the park, and there’s also a beach to visit, on the other side of the thick woods. Keep your eye out to appreciate the local flora and fauna. In the summer there are numerous restaurants in the park where you can stop for a drink or something to eat.

Venice is a legendary city with a charm and atmosphere all its own. The city was constructed on more than 100 islands connected by a series of canals, most of which are lined with gorgeous palaces, beautiful churches, and all sorts of impressive architecture. While the city isn’t huge, it is packed with pedestrian-only streets and quaint, winding alleys that will keep you exploring for days. The city is very popular with tourists year-round, so you certainly won’t be the only travelers walking through the streets with camera in hand. This being Italy, the cuisine in Venice is delicious, and we can especially recommend the Cicchetti of Venice tour. Cicchetti are Venetian tapas, and this tour will introduce you to some of the city’s most iconic eateries and its most delicious recipes. If it’s your first time in Venice, we can organize a tour to show you all the most important sites. And since no trip to the city of canals is complete without a boat ride, we offer a number of ways for you to get a new point of view of the city and its magnificent architecture. Murano and Burano

Suggestion to explore on your own

Today we suggest going off the beaten path and onto a boat to cross the water and explore two islands which are not islands at all. Murano and Burano are tiny archipelagos, collections of islands linked by numerous bridges. On Murano, the stately architecture is stunning but the main attraction here is the collection of incredible glassblowers, whose works in progress you can see at Murano’s many ateliers

. Burano is also an archipelago in northern Venice, consisting of four islands linked by many bridges. What you’ll notice first are the brightly painted houses, which make the island glow with an energy all its own. Largely inhabited by artists, it’s a great place to poke around and explore, including the Church of San Martino, which houses a classic Tiepolo painting from the 18th century. We can arrange tickets for a group boat trip but you might prefer exploring on your own.

Venice: A City for Lovers

Suggestion to explore on your own

Venice is a city of dreams and romance. A vacation here with your sweetheart will be a memory you’ll cherish forever. It’s hard to go wrong when you’re strolling along the canals in one of the most beautiful and unique cities in the world. You can enjoy a variety of excellent tours on land and water that will help you explore all of Venice’s secrets. There are plenty of wonderful restaurants and bars to visit, and the lights and live music on St. Mark’s square at night are just lovely. The atmosphere throughout the city is incomparable. Every little alley leads to some new discovery, and the ever-present sound of the sea is enchanting. But of course, no romantic visit to Venice is complete without a gondola ride. As you get close in your own private gondola, floating along on the gentle current as waves lap up against stairs leading to ancient palaces, you’ll know why Venice has always been a city for lovers.

The response time was always EXTREMELY fast. JayWay Travel did it all, all we had to do was show up, which was really important to us for our honeymoon. We met true local people that we never would have gotten to know without JayWay.

JayWay Travel is the perfect travel company for me. JayWay Travel provided me with a wonderful balance between the assistance and support that reduced the travel chaos and yet still allowed for the independence and spontaneity I yearn to have while traveling.
