3 Nights in Krakow

Krakow may not be the largest city in Poland, but it is by far the most popular with travelers. Less industrial than Warsaw, Krakow was once Poland’s royal capital, and unlike the rest of the country, came out of World War II with its gorgeous architecture mostly unscathed. One glance at the city’s perfectly preserved and restored Old Town and it will be abundantly clear why Krakow is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. This compact historical district houses the largest square in Europe, where you can stroll, shop from the market and sample some tasty Polish delicacies. And, if you’re in the mood you can also sip some of Poland’s famous vodka infused with tangy buffalo grass. Krakow’s cultural life is rich and there are more than enough classical and jazz concerts to attend during your stay. Just walk through Old Town any evening and you’ll find warmly lit cafes, restaurants and bars. Of course, not all of the city’s history is happy, and both the Jewish Heritage in Krakow as well as nearby Auschwitz concentration camp are a chilling and vivid reminder of World War II. You can also explore Poland’s natural wonders from Krakow, with visits to the atmospheric Wieliczka Salt Mine, and the Tatra Mountains all comfortable day trips.

Krakow Private Walking Tour

Exploring Krakow

Included in your vacation package price.

Today you’ll be getting a feel for the story of the city with a private tour with a local expert. This is the best way to discover little-known historical facts and anecdotes while wandering around the heart of Krakow. You'll start from the Jewish District (Kazimierz), with a walk up to the 14th century Wawel Castle and stroll along Kanonicza and Grodzka Streets in order to reach Collegium Maius (Great College). The tour continues along the Royal Way to the Main Market Square with visiting the Cloth Hall (perfect for buying souvenirs) and St. Mary's Basilica.

Dark History

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

A visit to Krakow isn’t truly complete without an excursion to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where well over a million were murdered during WWII. The victims were primarily Jews, but also included many tens of thousands of Poles, Roma, prisoners of war, and others. We offer tours of this death camp, and its memorial. For a better understanding of the Holocaust's effects on Krakow, visit the city's Jewish ghetto, and the factory Oskar Schindler used to shelter many people marked for death, as part of a private tour.

Auschwitz-Birkenau Group Tour

Auschwitz-Birkenau Group Tour

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

See for yourself where some of the worst atrocities of World War II were carried out on this tour to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Auschwitz was the biggest Nazi concentration and death camp in occupied Europe. Situated about an hour from Krakow, the Auschwitz Memorial Museum is included in UNESCO's World Heritage List. During the tour you will visit both parts of the museum, located in Oswiecim and Brzezinka. You will also watch a documentary on the history of the Auschwitz concentration and death camp. It's a stunning day that will put you in touch with history. This is a group tour of about 30 people, so we can upgrade to a private tour, or combine this tour with private transfers, instead of riding in a large bus, which takes a while to pick up and drop people scattered throughout Krakow's center.

Prepare to be amazed at the devotion that drove miners to carve figures, monuments and altar pieces into the walls of an 800-year-old salt mine. This underground world has earned a place on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. As you descend 360 of the tour's total 800 steps into the salt mine, you'll feel like you're entering a vast underground city complete with huge caverns and underground lakes, 135 meters beneath the surface. One of the most unique aspects is the largest underground chapel, devoted to Saint Kinga, a Hungarian princess who is said to have spurned a marriage proposal by the Polish king by tossing his engagement ring into a salt mine in Transylvania. When Wieliczka's devout miners miraculously found the ring, she took the hint. After walking for 3 kilometers/2 miles, you'll visit the snack bar and souvenir shop, then ride an elevator back to the surface. We do not recommend this tour for people with mobility issues.

Kyiv is a modern city steeped in history, where high-end shops and colorful restaurants are surrounded with classical architecture. It is the source of Eastern Slavic culture and Kyiv still keeps a firm hold on history. The city’s famous buildings include Saint Sofia, a church that’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nestled in the hills, Kyiv feels spread out and can be a bit of a challenge to take in if you’re trying do so on foot but an excellent public transport system and very inexpensive taxis make getting around a breeze. There’s no shortage of unique things to do here, like touring the grounds of the opulent villa of former President Victor Yanukovych, complete with a huge collection of cars and private zoo. Another must-see, the Monastery of the Caves or Pechersk Lavra, is unlike anyplace else. This UNESCO World Heritage Site consists of a large complex of churches and chapels but most striking is a series of underground caves where you can see mummified monks from the 11th century. It’s just one more thing that makes Kyiv special.

Day 9

Day 9 - Your Second Full Day in Kyiv

From Nuclear Catastrophe to Fleeing President

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

Ukraine has a long, proud history, but is more famous for its catastrophes and revolutions, rather than its accomplishments. Visit two of its most unusual sights as a day trip. Chernobyl is surprisingly safe to visit, with a day trip to sanitized areas giving a radiation dose equal to an hour on a plane, or 1/160th that of a chest x-ray. With a full-day tour, you can come right up to the new concrete sarcophagus covering the reactor, and tour the neighboring ghost town of Pripyat. A model town with ferries, theaters, and even an amusement park and hippodrome, you can still see why its former residents describe the "city covered in roses" with such sorrow (and perhaps understand why some residents have chosen to move back to the exclusion zone surrounding the city). For something a bit more upscale, visit the former home of Yanukovych, the president overthrown in a 2014 revolution. Covered with enough gold to make the Pope jealous, you'll find everything from a floating restaurant in a fake Spanish galleon, to an ostrich farm on the vast grounds surrounding Yanukovych's mansion.

Chernobyl Private Day Tour

Chernobyl Private Day Tour

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant had a profound effect on all of Europe at the time, killing relatively few people immediately but the after effects are still being counted in the form of cancers caused by radiation exposure. The disaster had another long-lasting effect, changing government policies on nuclear power in many countries across Europe. A visit here is a sobering one but highly interesting.
