Explore the Czech Republic

This sample 10-day (9 nights) itinerary covers Prague, Brno, Cesky Krumlov and Karlovy Vary, returning to Prague again for the last night. Over these 10 days you'll experience the highlights of this small but beautiful country, from majestic Prague to up-and-coming Brno, the UNESCO-listed South Bohemian jewel of a medieval town of Cesky Krumlov, Plzen, the birthplace of Pilsner beer, and the ornate spa town of Karlovy Vary, perhaps better known by its German name, Carlsbad. All of our tours are custom, and this is just a sample meant to give an idea for what our trips are like, and the opportunities our destinations provide. One of our team in the region will be available to you during and leading up to the trip to answer any questions and arrange local services. You will receive access to your Guest Page, with its information on the best these destinations have to offer, including things to see and do, and other inside tips from restaurant recommendations to tipping advice. Upon arrival we will provide you with a local cell phone that you can use to contact our employee (who you will meet in person) throughout your trip. In all of our destinations, we offer a variety of memorable 3-5 accommodation options, including boutique hotels, charming B&Bs, and spacious apartments. With our firsthand experience, we can ensure they are all clean, comfortable, and centrally located, with local ambience.

“The Golden City,” “The City of 100 Spires,” “The Mother of Cities,” Prague has no shortage of nicknames paying homage to its charm and beauty. Prague’s winding cobblestone streets, gorgeous architecture and atmospheric bridges are fabled. Get up early and stroll across the statue-lined Charles Bridge. Soak it all in standing in the magnificent Old Town Square and admiring the craftsmanship of its 600-year old astronomical clock. From exploring the history and modern culture on foot, to traveling farther afield to take in the picturesque countryside and fairytale villages, you’ll have an itinerary full of adventure and relaxation. Besides the city’s history, which is evident on every street, including the beautifully preserved former Jewish Quarter, you can delve into the city’s gastronomy. You can literally dive into some of Europe’s best beers by visiting a beer spa, or explore its beloved breweries with walking tours, or enjoy a dinner cruise. Day-trip destinations include scenic castles, the perfect spa town, and Kutna Hora with its “bone church” and gothic cathedral. Prague is a city of history that comes to life for every visitor, no matter their interests.

Museums of All Kinds from Alchemy to Mucha

Suggestion to explore on your own

Prague’s got museums and galleries aplenty so there's more than enough to choose from. Our recommendations here all focus on something that's unique to Prague and the Czech Republic. In the center, the privately run Museum of Communism, curated by an American, tells the story of the five decades of totalitarian rule and its eventual demise. Around the corner the Mucha Museum is all about the famous Czech Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha. Hidden away in Old Town is the Alchemist's Workshop celebrating the fact that Prague was the world center for alchemy back in the day. The National Technical Museum in the Letna neighborhood celebrates above all the achievements of Czech engineers, inventors and designers. Art lovers could head for the National Gallery nearby, with a focus on Czech fine artists. A little deeper into the Holesovice neighbourhood you'll find DOX Gallery, with a full program of temporary exhibitions by modern artists.

Beer and Czech Tapas Small Group Tour

Taste Prague’s Exciting Food Scene

Please ask your travel advisor for the cost to add this to your package

Get to know Czech beer and food on a guided Czech Beer and Tapas Tour that will get you out of the center and into two adjoining Prague neighbourhoods. Your guide will lead you from place to place trying microbrews and small plates of Czech dishes. Since 2008 or so the foodie scene in Prague has developed at a rapid pace. There are farmer's markets on most days and the city's large expat population has provided both customers and restauranteurs to create a cosmopolitan restaurant scene that most cities would envy if only they knew about it.

Day 4 - Traveling to Brno by Train

Today, you'll have a lovely train ride through the Czech countryside from Prague to rapidly gentrifying Brno. As there are a number of trains running throughout the day, you can depart either morning or afternoon for the roughly 2.5 hour trip. We'll arrange standard class tickets based on the train time of your choice and have a driver transfer you from your accommodation to the Prague train station. We can also arrange first class tickets for an additional fee though in our experience there is little difference, other than slightly wider seats and proximity to the dining car if available, between the two types of carriage.

Don't listen to the Praguers when they tell you Brno is dull. They probably haven't been in a while. This provincial city and capital of the South Moravia region has plenty to keep you occupied. A tech boom in the 2000s and onwards has raised salaries and expectations all round and the city center is alive with cool places. The NY Times called Brno an architectural mecca, and you'll definitely want to reserve tickets to see Villa Tugendhat, a UNESCO-listed functionalist villa built for a wealthy industrialist's family in the 1920s by renowned architect Mies van der Rohe. Brno is also a great base for trips to the wine hills of Southern Moravia and to the Moravian Karst, where the Punkva Cave is the most popular attraction.

UNESCO-listed Cesky Krumlov is the second most visited place in the Czech Republic and for good reason. A 2.5 hour drive south of Prague, it is a prime example of Bohemian village life. The town is highlighted by a castle which houses more than 300 rooms and is the second largest in the Czech Republic. The Vltava river flows through the old town, which is a labyrinth of cobblestone alleyways with delightful shops. No matter where you are, all the town's highlights are no more than five minute walk away. Cesky Krumlov is surrounded by verdant hills, making it an ideal place for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, or even golfing. A canoe or rafting trip on the Vltava should not be missed. It is also a city of culture and art, with seven museums and four galleries as well as medieval, music and theater festivals taking place year round. The castle gardens even have a unique rotating stage. For beer lovers, the city has its own brewery. The local brew is served around town in traditional taverns and restaurants where you can enjoy typical hearty Czech dishes in a unique classic setting.

Karlovy Vary is not just the most famous spa town in the Czech Republic, it's also a beautiful place with its own atmosphere. Whether you're coming to enjoy the sumptuous spa and wellness treatments in the luxury hotels, or just to have a look around, a visit to Karlovy Vary, about two hours drive from Prague, always feels like something special. The most interesting parts of the town are centered around a gorgeous promenade lined with special fountains for the hot spring water Karlovy Vary is famous for. Each fountain has water with a different temperature and mineral content. You'll see visitors and locals alike sipping the water from special porcelain cups which you can find on sale at many street-side stalls. Drinking this medicinal water is the simplest way to connect with the rich spa history here. Karlovy Vary is the home of Moser, the famous glassmaker. It's also home to the Czech Republic's most famous herbal liquor, Becherovka. Karlovy Vary is famous in the film industry as well. It hosts one of Europe's largest and oldest film festivals, which still attracts Hollywood's big names.

On arriving to Cesky Krumlov your driver will take you to your centrally located accommodation.

An afternoon in Karlovy Vary

Suggestion to explore on your own

Karlovy Vary's spa district is easily explored on foot and there's plenty to see in an afternoon. To get an overview of the whole town, there's nothing better than taking the funicular to the Diana Tower. If you're looking to eat, then the hunting lodge style Diana Restaurant, serving up Czech classics as well as some international dishes right next to the tower is an atmospheric eatery. Walk back to town or take the funicular again then stroll through the spa area and its colonnades. If you're brave enough sample the mineral springs and don't miss the Vridlo geyser, a symbol of the town, that shoots 160 degree water 40 feet in the air. You might notice many other visitors to the town munching on large round wafers, these are another KV tradition. They're inexpensive and best eaten warm. If it's a hot day and you remembered your swimwear then a dip in the outdoor pool at the Hotel Thermal, with great views over the town from its terrace, is one of our favorite ways to cool down.

Day 9

Day 9 - Traveling to Prague by Bus

Karlovy Vary's Signature Products

Suggestion to explore on your own

Karlovy Vary is known for two very distinctive traditional Czech products. At the bus station end of the main shopping street you'll find the Becherovka Museum. This bittersweet herbal liqueur is made from a secret and well-guarded recipe. Have fun guessing the ingredients! No visit to the Czech Republic would be complete without visiting a glassworks and there truly is no finer than Moser. Tours run every half-hour from 9 AM to 2:30 PM every day and the glassworks and museum is a 10 minute taxi ride from the center.

Karlovy Vary's Signature Products

The buses between Karlovy Vary and Prague are very frequent and we will book tickets for your choice of departure time for the journey to the Czech capital. If you are staying in the spa area of town your hotel can arrange a transfer to the bus station for a small fee. If you are in the town center, it is a short walk to the bus terminal.
