Condensed Italian Classics

This sample week-long itinerary covers Rome, Florence, and Venice at what we will admit s a frantic pace. If you have any more days you can spare, Florence and Venice certainly deserve an extra day, and Rome too. The services we provide as part of our comprehensive packages include accommodations, train tickets, transfers (airport and train station) and city tours. In addition to the tours included we can arrange a number of excursions based on your own interests. There is also an option to travel between cities by private car or van transfers for an extra fee. All of our tours are custom, and this is just a sample meant to give an idea for what our trips are like, and the opportunities our destinations provide. One of our team in the region will be available to you during and leading up to the trip to answer any questions and arrange local services. You will receive access to your Guest Page, with its information on the best these destinations have to offer, including things to see and do, and other inside tips from restaurant recommendations to tipping advice. Upon arrival we will provide you with a local cell phone that you can use to contact our employee (who you will meet in person) throughout your trip. In all of our destinations, we offer a variety of memorable 3-5 accommodation options, including boutique hotels, charming B&Bs, and spacious apartments. With our firsthand experience, we can ensure they are all clean, comfortable, and centrally located, with local ambience.

3 Nights in Rome

3 Nights in Rome

The capital of Italy is a vibrant, energetic and stylish city. While thoroughly modern in sensibility, Rome is also home to some of the world’s most important works of classic art and architecture. This city has been an epicenter for culture, politics and religion for more than 2,500 years. From the Spanish Steps to the Vatican, there are more than enough sights to keep even the most active tourists busy and even somewhere as popular as Rome you can find places just off the tourist trail and bustling with locals. But it’s also nice to slow down and enjoy Rome’s famous cafes and restaurants, which can be just as beguiling as the buildings. Lounge with an espresso on the Campo de Fiori and watch the changing light on the fountains and the facades. Visit the Vatican and explore some of the world’s most beautiful churches. Rome really comes alive at night, when restaurants and wine bars bring a renewed vitality to the city. You’ll also have opportunities for day trips to local vineyards, olive groves, and other places producing regional delicacies. No matter what your interests, or what kind of holiday you’re looking for, Rome will be an enjoyable destination.

After you land at Rome's Fiumicino airport you will be met in the arrivals hall by a driver holding a sign with your name on. The journey to your accommodation in the center of Rome should take around an hour.

Day 2

Focus on Ancient Rome with a group or private tour

Included in your vacation package price.

Rome's origin story unfolds when you visit the Colosseum and the adjacent Roman Forum. Hear about life in ancient Rome and soak in the grandeur of these testaments to a lost civilisation. We can arrange for a private guide to explain how the Colosseum was built and what happened to it in the years since. Afterwards the tour proceeds to the Roman Forum, the center of political life of the city and ultimately the Empire, finding out the different purposes of the buildings whose columns and porticos still stand today. If you'd prefer the atmosphere of a group tour, which for parties of 4 or fewer can also save some money, we can instead arrange for spaces on a tour by a reputable group tour company.

The Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain are all covered. You'll get insider tips and tricks to help you in your time as a temporary Roman and enjoy some homemade gelato too.

Florence is the capital of Tuscany and home to the region’s greatest Renaissance art and architecture. The Renaissance actually started here, and today the city’s numerous cathedrals and art galleries show the evidence of this rich and inspiring period. You’ll want to see the Duomo Cathedral and the Galleria dell’Accademia, which houses Michelangelo’s “David.” Botticelli and Da Vinci are here too, at some of the city’s other amazing galleries. But there’s more to do in Florence than simply admire the art. It’s a beautiful, romantic place, and even a stroll through the streets is charming. Add world-class restaurants, delectable local wine and cuisine, and a warm Tuscan welcome, and you have a destination unlike any other. Florence is also an ideal base for exploring Tuscany, with its picturesque hills and vineyards in the heart of Italy.

Day 5

Day 5 - Your First Full Day in Florence

Explore Tuscany: San Gimignano, Siena and Chianti

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

One of the best things about Florence is how easy it is to get into the Tuscan countryside to explore this fabulous part of Italy. Unless you have your own car, a group excursion departing from Florence in the morning provides the perfect opportunity to cover a lot of ground without spending too much money.

A splendid excursion recommended for those without many days to dedicate to the region includes San Gimignano, aka the "Medieval Manhattan," thanks to its 14 towers, and the splendid Siena, famed for its horse race that takes place on the main square. No visit to Tuscany is complete without a visit to a winery and this is where you can have lunch and taste some of the local wine.

For a more active and exciting experience, a Vespa or E-bike are just perfect on the scenic rolling hills.

San Gimignano, Siena and Chianti Group Tour

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

This full-day tour will show you some of the most beautiful sights in Italy. An expert local guide will show you all the secrets and stories to famous sights including San Gimignano, Siena and Chianti. You'll set out from the city and learn about the history and culture that have made Italy so special today. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and don't forget your camera!

Activity Level : Light
Duration : 11.5 hours

Vespa and Chianti Small Group Tour

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

This group Vespa tour through Chianti is a interesting way to see this beloved countryside. You'll zip along the deserted roads that wind through the hills and vineyards. It's a great way to get out of the city and do something different while visiting Italy. You'll look just like a local! Meet the group at the appointed time and place and set out. You're going to have a great time!

Florence in a Day Private Tour

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

Along with an expert guide you'll visit the Academia and Uffizi galleries, with an interesting walking tour of the city between. Your guide will meet you at your accommodation at the agreed-upon time. At the end of the tour you'll have a chance to linger in the Uffizi gallery to discover more artistic wonders at your own pace.

Activity Level : Moderate

Cook with a local chef

Please ask your travel advisor for the cost to add this to your package

What better way to get to know a region than by cooking some of its local dishes? If you're of a culinary bent or just curious about how Italian food is so tasty, we have the perfect activity for you. A small group market tour and cooking class will teach you a lot more about the local cuisine than eating in a restaurant. Start the day with a tour of Florence's Central Market with an Italian chef, choosing the ingredients to prepare today's lunch with. After that you'll head up to the kitchen and get to work. Over the next few hours you'll prepare a full four course Italian meal, from appetiser to dessert. When you sit down to enjoy the fruit of your labors with some wine or soft drink you will feel both satisfied and educated, coming away from the class with some recipes to impress the folks back home with.

2 Nights in Venice

Venice is a legendary city with a charm and atmosphere all its own. The city was constructed on more than 100 islands connected by a series of canals, most of which are lined with gorgeous palaces, beautiful churches, and all sorts of impressive architecture. While the city isn’t huge, it is packed with pedestrian-only streets and quaint, winding alleys that will keep you exploring for days. The city is very popular with tourists year-round, so you certainly won’t be the only travelers walking through the streets with camera in hand. This being Italy, the cuisine in Venice is delicious, and we can especially recommend the Cicchetti of Venice tour. Cicchetti are Venetian tapas, and this tour will introduce you to some of the city’s most iconic eateries and its most delicious recipes. If it’s your first time in Venice, we can organize a tour to show you all the most important sites. And since no trip to the city of canals is complete without a boat ride, we offer a number of ways for you to get a new point of view of the city and its magnificent architecture. It’s easy to while away your time in Venice, discovering new secrets around every corner.

Day 6

Day 6 - Arrival in Venice

Start your Venetian experience off in style by arriving in a private water taxi. We'll arrange a transfer by boat from Santa Lucia train station to your hotel in the city.

Murano and Burano

Suggestion to explore on your own

Today we suggest going off the beaten path and onto a boat to cross the water and explore two islands which are not islands at all. Murano and Burano are tiny archipelagos, collections of islands linked by numerous bridges. On Murano, the stately architecture is stunning but the main attraction here is the collection of incredible glassblowers, whose works in progress you can see at Murano’s many ateliers

. Burano is also an archipelago in northern Venice, consisting of four islands linked by many bridges. What you’ll notice first are the brightly painted houses, which make the island glow with an energy all its own. Largely inhabited by artists, it’s a great place to poke around and explore, including the Church of San Martino, which houses a classic Tiepolo painting from the 18th century. We can arrange tickets for a group boat trip but you might prefer exploring on your own.

Day 7 - Your First Full Day in Venice

You’ll get a feel for the layout of the city and appreciate some of its legendary landmarks. After being picked up at your accommodation, you’ll head toward the elegant Piazza San Marco, which is enclosed by buildings from the ancient republic. The shining gold of the Byzantine St. Mark church is sure to impress you. Later you’ll wind your way through the Castello district, including the large campo Santa Maria Formosa. Before reaching the famous Rialto bridge you’ll stop by the square of San Giovanni e Paolo and the Marco Polo House. From the top of the bridge you’ll be able to take in the wonders of the Grand Canal. At this point you’ll be right in the market, which is a lovely place to enjoy a glass of wine along with local recipes. Here you’ll conclude your tour in true Italian style.

Everything was seamless. That's the way we like it. Also, we prefer to explore on our own, and JayWay provided the information we needed to do that. Everyone responded when we needed them, including Jay.

Our honeymoon was great and JayWay was there to assist us and make the trip stress free. Even when we were late showing up for the kayak excursion (thought it was an hour later), JayWay's local representative called and reminded us of the time, as well as arranged for the kayak operator to wait for us.

JayWay made our first trip to Central Europe and the Adriatic a wonderful experience. From accommodations to transportation to restaurant recommendations, to personal guides, their arrangements and suggestions were outstanding. We'll certainly use JayWay again and will enthusiastically recommend them to our friends and family. On our last night in Dubrovnik, my husband, who's very particular and wasn't convinced that he even wanted to take this trip ('Croatia???') said: 'This was the perfect vacation. Best we've ever had.' Thank you JayWay!
