This sample two week itinerary takes an alternative view on Croatia, replacing overnight stops in big-name locations like Split and Dubrovnik with stays at quieter nearby spots and staying on the idyllic islands of Vis and Korcula that lie a little further out of the way than Hvar. This is the ideal itinerary for a second or third trip to Croatia. If you've already fallen in love with the country, this will seal the deal.

We've set out this itinerary starting in Zadar and ending in Cavtat, but you could also do this route in reverse. You'll be island hopping, cruising on the brilliant blue waters of the Adriatic, and stopping off for fresh seafood and swimming at some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Everything has been planned for you, so you'll be able to really enjoy the best this natural paradise has to offer. All of our tours are custom, and this is just a sample meant to give an idea of what our trips are like, and the opportunities our destinations provide.

One of our team members in the region will be available to you leading up to and during your trip to answer any questions and arrange local services. You will receive access to your Guest Page, with its information on the best these destinations have to offer, including things to see and do, and other inside tips from restaurant recommendations to tipping advice. Upon arrival, we will provide you with a local SIM that you can use to reach your local JayWay contact (who you will meet in person) throughout your trip. In all of our destinations, we offer a variety of memorable 3-5 star accommodation options, including boutique hotels, charming B&Bs, and spacious apartments. With our firsthand experience, we can ensure they are all clean, comfortable, and centrally located, with local ambience.

Zadar might lack the big name glitz of Split down the coast, but this bustling university city's peninsular Old Town also dates back to Roman times. The central forum and original city gates set the tone. The marbled limestone of the main street, Kalelarga, echoes Dubrovnik's Stradun, but Zadar is very much its own city, as evidenced by installations like the wave-powered Sea Organ and the showy Greeting to the Sun. When in Zadar, be sure to find a vantage point along the Riva (waterfront) to admire what Hitchcock considered "the most beautiful sunset in the world, more beautiful than the one in Key West...applauded at every evening". As well as exploring the historic sites of Zadar's Old Town, there's plenty to do in the region. The Plitvice, Krka, Paklenica, and Kornati Islands National Parks are all within easy reach for day trips, either with an organized group, private guide, or on your own by rental car. If you want to spend a little time on the beach, there are several sandy beaches in the area, a relative rarity in Croatia, including the Nin lagoon, which is often regarded Croatia's most beautiful beach.

One of the best-preserved medieval towns in the Mediterranean, Korcula is instantly recognizable from its red-roofed houses and stunning walled-in Old Town, which juts out into the sea. Two of the biggest attractions are the Cathedral of St. Marco and Marco Polo's original home. One of the greenest islands on the Adriatic, Korcula is poised on the edge of nature on both sides, with rolling hills for hiking and biking behind it, and incredible beaches along the coast. This is the ideal stopover between Dubrovnik and Hvar, and is a pleasant destination for a several-day stay. The island produces some of the region’s finest white wines. Just a brief ferry ride away, the neighboring Peljesac peninsula produces amazing red wines. Mljet, a stunning lake with an island complete with its own monastery, is one of the most impressive day trips from Korcula. You can also take the opportunity to go fishing in the alluring blue waters off the coast, or explore the nearby islands by boat. One of the most unique activities in Korcula is Moreska, an incredible combat dance performance performed by knights with swords. But even if you stay in town, there’s plenty to see. There are two beautiful lakes here, as well as a Benedictine monastery from the 12th century. Besides biking, you can also rent a boat or a kayak. Hiking is another thing you might want to do. You'll be rewarded with the most stunning view of the Mljet coastline. After a long day of adventure, we suggest a nice refreshing swim. Unlike most national parks, Mljet allows swimming. The water in the park tends to be a few degrees warmer than the sea, which makes it even better.

Enjoy a Relaxing Beach Day at Saplunara

Suggestion to explore on your own

The island of Mljet is famous for two things: the National Park and Saplunara Beach. One of the very rare sandy beaches in Croatia, Saplunara is a perfect spot to enjoy sunbathing and swimming in the crystal clear sea for a whole day. Located at the Eastern tip of the Island, this natural bay is sheltered from the strong winds and high waves and surrounded by dense pine woods that provide shade. While on the beach, you can enjoy a beverage or a meal at a cafe or a restaurant, but it's a great spot for those in need of some peace and quiet as well. In order to reach it from Pomena, we suggest renting a car or getting a taxi, which is about an hour's ride.

Cavtat is about as low-key as it gets on the Dalmatian coast while still retaining an air of exclusivity. The town dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. There are billionaire's yachts moored in the marina, decent restaurants lining the seafront, a church, a rector's palace, and that's about it. A popular last night stop if you're worried about making it to Dubrovnik's airport in time (it's just 10 minutes away, practically at the end of the runway). If you're looking for a base from which to visit Dubrovnik (without actually staying there), explore the surrounding Konavle countryside, or to nip into neighboring Montenegro, Cavtat is just right.

Meet the Famous Locals

Suggestion to explore on your own

If you would like to learn a bit more about the history and famous figures of Cavtat and its surroundings, start with the House of Vlaho Bukovac. This exemplar of 19th-century architecture and home to one of Croatia's most famous painters not only gives insights into the life of an artist whose symbolist works sell for six figures but explores his Italian/Croatian family. The Racic Family Mausoleum is a monument of unique beauty and symbolism carved from stone, the work of sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, whose sculptures flank the entrance to Chicago's Grant Park (late in life, he taught at Syracuse and Notre Dame). Cavtat was home to Baltazar Bogisic, the leading 19th-century sociologist, anthropologist, and jurist who drafted much of newly independent Montenegro's constitution and laws. When he died, his sister established the Baltazar Bogisic Collection, preserving and displaying many of his 35,000 items, mainly letters and rare books, but including folk studies and coins.
