Paris

Travel and LeisureFodorsUSA TodayNew York TimesNational GeographicWashington PostVogue

Called the City of Lights for a reason, Paris is abundant in amazing things to see and do. Spending one week in the French capital means that you have enough time not only to check out the city's famous sights, such as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, but also to delve into the essence of the real city, explore the secrets of French cuisine, and see more of France on easy day trips. From standing in awe before masterpieces like the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo at the Louvre Museum to walking along the elegant Champs-Elysees, the romantic banks of the Seine River, or the narrow alleys of Montmartre to stepping inside the imposing Notre Dame Cathedral or the lavish Palace of Versailles, this one-week Paris itinerary has it all. Apart from exploring the heart of Paris, you will also visit the charming village of Giverny where Monet spent most of his life, and Champagne where you will learn the secrets of - and taste - the world-renowned bubbly nectar.

One of our team members in France will be available to you leading up to and during your trip to answer any questions and arrange local services. You will receive access to your Guest Page, a valuable source of information on the best Paris has to offer, including things to see and do, and other inside tips, from restaurant recommendations to tipping advice. Upon arrival, we will provide you with a local SIM card with data that you can use to reach your local JayWay contact (who you will meet in person) throughout your trip. In all of our destinations, we offer a variety of memorable 3 to 5-star accommodation options, including boutique hotels and charming B&Bs. With our firsthand experience, we can ensure they are all clean, comfortable, and centrally located, with local ambiance.

Paris is situated in the northern part of France. The city sprawls over both banks of the Seine River and on two islands: the Îles Saint Louis and the larger Île de la Cité. The historical city center is built around the Seine, and it has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. For a glimpse into the oldest part of Paris, take a stroll along the Seine and around the 1st and 4th districts to admire iconic landmarks, such as the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris or the Louvre Museum, among others. But leave some space and time for the rest of the city's districts, as each of Paris' 20 arrondissements possesses incredible treasures to discover.

Enjoying Paris Like a Local

Suggestion to explore on your own

There's no doubt that a trip to Paris must include visits to the city's most iconic attractions. That said, it's always a great idea to take some time to explore the lesser-known districts, the ones that mostly locals frequent. Cour du Commerce St-André and Canal Saint-Martin are two of the most authentic parts of Paris, offering a glimpse into the life of real Parisians. However, the most off-the-beaten-path neighborhood is probably Belleville, a district where locals hang out over a glass of wine or a meal consisting of mouthwatering local food. For that reason, Belleville is the best place for travelers to mingle with locals to their heart's content.

In Paris, fashion and shopping are at the core of the city's culture. During your trip to the French capital, we recommend spending at least a few hours roaming around the city's main shopping districts to feel what it's like to be a true Parisian. From luxury shopping at high-end fashion brand stores along the Champs-Élysées or window shopping at the shiny department stores that line Boulevard Haussmann, such as the famous Galeries Lafayette, to mingling with locals at the small boutiques of the most off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods, like Canal Saint-Martin, Paris offers endless opportunities to indulge in this favorite French pastime. For a more immersive experience, consider combining shopping with a private tour of one of the city's most picturesque neighborhoods; either Saint-Germain-des-Prés or Le Marais, probably the best neighborhood for shopping in Paris.

From sipping on exquisite wine at a low-key bar to dancing the night away in a trendy club, Paris nightlife has it all. One of the things not to miss in Paris at night is a cabaret show. A tradition that dates back to the late 19th century, cabaret shows are an integral part of Parisian culture, and you can enjoy them in places like Moulin Rouge and Lido de Paris. For a more down-to-earth experience among locals, head to the neighborhood of Bastille, which turns into the liveliest party scene when the night falls in Paris.

From jazz, blues, and folk to rock, hip hop, and electro tunes, the city's live music scene has something for everyone. Music bars aside, Paris is also renowned for its brilliant street performers. The charming neighborhood of Le Marais is a favorite among singers and bands. In Place des Vosges in particular, you may come across an opera singer or two filling the air with their heavenly voices. Probably the most unexpected places to enjoy live music in Paris are the city's metro stations, where performers of all music genres and ages make the daily commute a bit more pleasant.
