Your trip begins in Paris, one of the most romantic cities in Europe. With its several iconic landmarks, top-rated museums, and unique ambiance, the City of Light will find its way into your heart before you move on to your next destination, the manicured Geneva, the so-called Capital of Peace. From there, catch the train to Interlaken, the gateway to one of Switzerland's most scenic regions, the beautiful Bernese Highlands. Paris is situated in the northern part of France. The city sprawls over both banks of the Seine River and on two islands: the Îles Saint Louis and the larger Île de la Cité. The historical city center is built around the Seine, and it has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. For a glimpse into the oldest part of Paris, take a stroll along the Seine and around the 1st and 4th districts to admire iconic landmarks, such as the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris or the Louvre Museum, among others. But leave some space and time for the rest of the city's districts, as each of Paris' 20 arrondissements possesses incredible treasures to discover.

Getting to Know Paris, One Museum at a Time

Suggestion to explore on your own

With a plethora of superb art collections, some of the world's most recognizable masterpieces, and several museums where rich history and impressive architecture reign, it's no wonder that Paris is often called the City of Art. From the most-visited museum in the world, the Louvre, to museums dedicated to famous artists like Picasso and Rodin, to collections showcasing the life and work of fashion icons, such as Yves Saint Laurent, Paris has it all. Apart from the precious exhibits, it often happens that the museum buildings themselves are sights to behold for their architecture alone. The Beaux-Arts railway station that houses the exquisite Musée d'Orsay and the high-tech structure of Centre Pompidou are only two of the French capital's architectural wonders. You'll find more details of the many museums you could visit in your Guest Page, once your trip is booked.

Switzerland's second city and main French-speaking metropolis, this proud "Protestant Rome" was once John Calvin's capital, but is now famous as the eminently livable "Capital of Peace." A cosmopolitan center of global diplomacy from the Red Cross to much of the UN, Geneva is the scenic spot where the Rhone leaves Lake Geneva. The watchmaker's Mecca, Geneva offers impressive shopping and fine dining, but one of the best activities is free: walking through the Old Town and by the lake. Most of the city is reminiscent of France (which nearly surrounds it) although the more bohemian Carouge district draws plenty of locals thanks to its Mediterranean atmosphere. An hour's drive away, Mont Blanc (the Alps' highest peak) is easy to spot.

Lakeside Allure

Suggestion to explore on your own

Just arrived in Geneva? Head for the lake! Specifically, the lakeside bars, where you can sip colorful cocktails, have a glass of bubbly, or enjoy a simple cold drink and make plans for this gem of a city. The most iconic place is the floating Bateau Lavoir, which resembles the floating "washing boats" where 19th century women did their laundry. The city of Geneva has gained the attention of some exceptional personalities. To mention just one such luminary, Empress Elisabeth, AKA "Sisi" was a fan of the lake, although her love ended in tragedy on September 10, 1898, when she ran into an anarchist looking to take the life of a sovereign. Having arrived too late to assassinate one one of the lake's royal fans, he ran into Sisi instead, stabbing her. The grievously wounded empress boarded the Bateau Genéve, a steamship, where she passed away. Sold for scrap in the 70s, the boat was preserved, and transforms into a memorable floating restaurant every summer.

Humanitarian Geneva

Suggestion to explore on your own

There's a reason Geneva is associated with human rights. You can find exhibitions devoted to humanitarian efforts at the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, and the Palace of Nations. The former has three modern exhibitions devoted to defending human dignity, reconstructing family links, and reducing natural risks. The Palace of Nations was built to host the League of Nations, and has housed much of the United Nations since 1946, although Switzerland itself didn't become a UN member until 2002. Welcoming more than 25,000 delegates for over 10,000 intergovernmental meetings annually, this important complex is also home to many works of art, including some of the meeting rooms themselves. Explore the palace via its daily guided tours.

Switzerland's largest city and main hub, Zurich is where many of the nation's bankers and scholars bump shoulders. This cosmopolitan city ranks highly in terms of livability, but for all its wealth and global prestige, the Old Town remains charming, if almost spotless. The ridges flanking Zurich's river valley offer romantic views, but the best way to hit the ground running in Zurich is to follow the river itself as it cuts through the Old Town, then meets Lake Zurich. Along the way, indulge in detours, from upscale chocolatiers to low-stress beaches.

Suggestion to explore on your own

Even though Zurich is a capital city, it counts as a rather small one, compared to other European capitals. But worry not, the number of sights and activities is at least as high as in every other bigger destinations. As you will probably spend at least 2 nights here, we suggest walking through the Old Town, picking a couple of restaurants for later and then climbing up to the place called, Lindenhof, from where you can enjoy a beautiful sight of the city, the Limmat river and the surrounding hills.
