Peru is a destination where ancient civilizations, dramatic landscapes, and living traditions come together in unforgettable ways. On this private journey, you’ll experience the country’s timeless highlights at a comfortable pace, beginning in Lima, where colonial architecture and one of South America’s most exciting culinary scenes set the tone. From the capital, you’ll venture into the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a region of fertile farmland, traditional villages, and remarkable archaeological sites, offering a gentle introduction to life in the Andes.

The journey continues by scenic train to Machu Picchu, Peru’s most iconic landmark and one of the world’s great wonders. With expert guidance, you’ll explore the mysterious citadel and learn about the ingenuity and beliefs of the Inca civilization before returning to Cusco, the former imperial capital. Here, Inca stonework sits seamlessly beneath Spanish colonial buildings, and lively markets, churches, and nearby ruins reveal layers of history at every turn. Carefully balanced between guided exploration and free time, this itinerary combines cultural depth, natural beauty, and authentic local experiences for a truly memorable introduction to Peru.

As with all JayWay trips, one of our team members in Peru will be available to you leading up to and during your trip to answer any questions and arrange local services. You will receive access to your Guest Page, with its information on the best these destinations have to offer, including things to see and do, and other inside tips from restaurant recommendations to tipping advice. Upon arrival, we will provide you with a local SIM that you can use to reach your local JayWay contact (who you will meet in person) throughout your trip.

Day Stop in Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo is one of the most atmospheric destinations in the Sacred Valley, a small town where Inca history isn’t just preserved, but still very much lived. Its narrow streets, stone channels, and original urban layout date back more than 500 years, and this is why it's considered one of the best surviving examples of an Inca settlement. It's no overstatement to say that walking around Ollantaytambo feels like stepping into a living archaeological site.

Pachamanca, meaning “earth oven” in Quechua, is an ancient Andean tradition where meats and vegetables are slow-cooked over hot stones for a rich, smoky flavor. The experience begins with a guided visit to the hotel grounds, an organic farm, a cañazo distillery, and a coffee roastery. Guests then enjoy a farm-to-table feast of chicken, pork, lamb, and optional alpaca, rabbit, or cuy, served with native potatoes, vegetables, and Andean sauces. Lunch is accompanied by chicha morada and served outdoors with views of mountains, Inca ruins, and glaciers.

You'll be taken on board on one of the many daily PeruRail Vistadome services that whisk you through scenic surroundings you can admire through the panoramic windows. The Sacred Valley resort area is ideal for travelers seeking the perfect blend of nature, comfort, and relaxation. Evenings are usually peaceful, and most dining happens within the hotels, which offer excellent cuisine and beautiful settings. The atmosphere is more rural than urban, but that’s exactly what many guests appreciate: quiet nights, starry skies, and a sense of calm that comes into striking contrast with busier Peruvian cities. As the area is spread out, activities typically require short drives, and there are limited standalone restaurants or shops outside the hotels. But the combination of natural beauty, fresh air, and top-quality lodgings renders the Sacred Valley one of the most pleasant places to stay in the entire country.

Acclimatization's Important!

Suggestion to explore on your own

Cusco sits way up at around 11,150 feet (3,400 meters) above sea level, so give yourself time to acclimatize when you arrive. Take it easy on day one, stay well-hydrated, and avoid heavy meals or alcohol until you’re feeling settled. Many travelers find that sipping coca tea (available at every cafe, restaurant and hotel in Cusco) or taking short, gentle walks helps their body adjust. If you’re flying straight in from sea level, expect to feel the altitude. Most people tend to adjust to the altitude within a day.
