Roman History in Croatia

If you think you can learn about the Roman Empire only in Italy, we have a surprise in store. The small neighboring country of Croatia located across the Adriatic Sea is not only known for its beautiful coast and more than a thousand islands, but also for its significant historical heritage. As a part of the vast Roman Empire two millennia ago, Croatian territory today boasts some truly amazing monuments such as Diocletian’s Palace in Split, the Roman Amphitheater in Pula, and the Roman Forum in Zadar, as well as a recently discovered Ancient Roman archaeological site of Andautonia near Zagreb.

Professional local tour guides will not only take you to the sites but will also explain the whole context of that time, essential to understanding the magnificence of the Roman Empire. And of course, there will be enough time to relax and enjoy other aspects of beautiful Croatia.

The services that we provide as a part of our comprehensive travel packages include small and boutique accommodation, historical city tours, gastronomy and other themed private and small group tours. All our destinations are connected with private transfers, thus enabling you safe and comfortable travel between cities with the option to make stops along the way.

In addition to the tours included we can arrange a number of excursions based on your own interests. All of our tours are custom, and this is just a sample meant to give an idea of what our trips are like, and the opportunities our destinations provide.

One of our team members in the region will be available to you leading up to and during your trip to answer any questions and arrange additional local services. You will receive access to your Guest Page, with its information on the best these destinations have to offer, including things to see and do, and other inside tips from restaurant recommendations to tipping advice. Upon your arrival, we will provide you with a local cell phone that you can use to reach your local JayWay contact throughout your trip. In all of our destinations, we offer a variety of memorable 3-5 star accommodation options, including boutique hotels, charming B&Bs, and spacious apartments. With our first-hand experience, we can ensure they are all clean, comfortable, and centrally located, with local ambience.

Zagreb is a city where different worlds have long come together. Situated at the intersection of ancient trade routes between the Adriatic and Central Europe, it is a cosmopolitan place with various cultural influences evident in the cuisine and architecture at home in any Austro-Hungarian city. You’ll love exploring the open-air markets, impressive buildings, peaceful parks, and many delicious restaurants. Just strolling through the unique combination of medieval towers, 19th century palaces, ancient churches, and market squares is a pleasure, but there’s much more to do here. After exploring all that the city has to offer with a local guide, you’ll be able to make the most of your time. You could also take a guided bike tour around the city, to get a little exercise as you experience the city. But you’ll also want to explore some of the region surrounding Zagreb. As a longer day trip, you could see the delightful Trakoscan, a neo-Gothic castle sitting on a hilltop, surrounded by a romantic English style park with exotic trees and an artificial lake. While you’re there you can also stop in Varazdin to appreciate its ornate baroque architecture.

Take it Easy

Please ask your travel advisor for the cost to add this to your package

Trade your accommodations for fresh air in Zagreb, the greenest city in Croatia. Strolling through elegant parks and enjoying shaded benches is a perfect way to walk off your jet lag. For those who need a bit more than just a walk, cafes are a great place to enjoy the city like a local, soaking in the pulse of the city instead of rushing. Zagreb's food scene has been growing rapidly, providing many great choices: choose local, traditional, modern, or even selections from the growing street food scene. The capital of a country increasingly known for its wines, this is a perfect opportunity to indulge in a glass of local goodness in one of Zagreb’s many wine venues!

Unique Museums

Suggestion to explore on your own

There are numerous museums to visit in Zagreb, but two of the most unique are the Museum of Broken Relationships and the Arts and Crafts Museum. We recommend visiting at least one today. The Museum of Broken Relationships grew from a traveling exhibition revolving around the concept of failed relationships, and overcoming emotional pain through creation and rebirth. The Museum of Arts and Crafts was founded in 1880 as one of the first institutions of its kind in Europe with a rich collection of local cultural and historical creations which reflect everyday life and work.

The tour will continue to the Twin Gate, Gate of Hercules, Arch of the Sergii, Forum Romanum and the spectacular 65-square meter Mosaic of the Punishment of Dirce. Brilliant Brijuni National Park

Suggestion to explore on your own

Also known as the Brionian Islands, the Brijuni archipelago was once a star of the Austrian Riviera, drawing celebrities from James Joyce to Elizabeth Taylor. Home to Tito's summer residence, these islands are quieter now, but you can find villas going back to the Roman era, as well as churches and forts built by Austrians, Byzantines, the Knights Templar, and even Bronze Age settlers. The fastest way to arrive is by taking the 15-minute ferry from Fazana, a town eight kilometers north of Pula. En route, you'll enjoy beautiful views. Once you arrive at the main island, Veliki Brijun (known to the Italians as "Brioni Grande,") you can explore on your own, or enjoy an hourlong sightseeing ride on a tourist train.

Zadar might lack the big name glitz of Split down the coast, but this bustling university city's peninsular Old Town also dates back to Roman times. The central forum and original city gates set the tone. The marbled limestone of the main street, Kalelarga, echoes Dubrovnik's Stradun, but Zadar is very much its own city, as evidenced by installations like the wave-powered Sea Organ and the showy Greeting to the Sun. When in Zadar, be sure to find a vantage point along the Riva (waterfront) to admire what Hitchcock considered "the most beautiful sunset in the world, more beautiful than the one in Key West...applauded at every evening". As well as exploring the historic sites of Zadar's Old Town, there's plenty to do in the region. The Plitvice, Krka, Paklenica, and Kornati Islands National Parks are all within easy reach for day trips, either with an organized group, private guide, or on your own by rental car. If you want to spend a little time on the beach, there are several sandy beaches in the area, a relative rarity in Croatia, including the Nin lagoon, which is often regarded Croatia's most beautiful beach.

Day 7 - Traveling to Split by Private Car

Some choices will need to be made about your travel itinerary before you depart for Split today. First, we'll arrange for a private driver to pick you up from your accommodation in Zadar. We suggest an early start so you can take advantage of at least one of the great things to do along the way. Nature lovers will want to stop at the Krka National Park to see the stunning lakes and waterfalls, followed by lunch at Skradin on a picturesque inland bay. If you like wine, we can arrange for a special tasting at the renowned Bibich winery in the hills above Skradin, which is suddenly famous since Anthony Bourdain paid the place a visit. In Sibenik, you can visit the interesting UNESCO-listed Cathedral of St. James and then enjoy lunch at the excellent Pelegrini wine tavern next door. You'll need to tell our local representative where you'd like to go before your journey so they can make the necessary arrangements.

The Roman Emperor Diocletian made Split his home in the 4th Century AD, building a vast palace complex on the waterfront that stands to this day. In fact several of the accommodation options we offer in Split are nestled inside its ancient walls. These days there is an embankment in front of Diocletian's palace but the water used to go right up to the main wall. It's on this man-made strip of land that you'll find the Riva, a pedestrian promenade bustling with life. Split's UNESCO listed Old Town is contained within these old walls and is a pedestrian-only maze that it is quite easy, but fun, to get lost in. Who know what romantic hidden cafés you might find in one of the narrow streets and alleyways? To get the best out of your time in Split, however, we recommend taking a tour with a local guide. Split is very well connected for flights, with an international airport a half hour drive away and is a popular stopping point for our guests on their way between Dubrovnik and the islands of Hvar, Vis, or Korcula, all easily reached by a ferry from Split's port. If you base yourself in Split for a few days, you will find it is also perfect located for visits to some of Croatia's most stunning national parks.

Awaken Your Taste Buds

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

Explore Dalmatian cooking and ingredients with the help of local experts. You can enjoy wine and olive oil tastings, getting to know the homemade breads and goat cheeses that go best with them. Or, if you're feeling a bit more peckish, sit at the chef's table, and try five traditional Dalmatian tapas. These are quite seasonal, and tend to take advantage of the local seafood. Sitting with the chef, you can learn his techniques and the stories and tasty aims behind each masterful combination of flavors.

If you’re looking for a deliciously filling lunch or dinner in Split, we can also highly recommend Konoba Fife, right on the harbor. There you’ll find delicious local seafood and an authentic atmosphere at the right price. It’s a charming spot that’s inviting and unpretentious, authentic instead of stuffy. Be sure to ask about the daily specials! We also recommend visiting Split's famous fish and greengrocer's markets, a central part of local life. We recommend visiting in early morning, when the seafood is at its freshest, and there are the most options. This is when many locals buy food for lunch.

Olive Oil and Wine Pairing Private Tour
