Spain from North to South

10 Days / 9 Nights

Barcelona, San Sebastian, Madrid, Malaga

Travel and LeisureFodorsUSA TodayNew York TimesNational GeographicWashington PostVogue
The ideal way to explore many of Spain's idiosyncratic regions. This ten-day trip is the perfect introduction and we believe the inspiration for many return trips to dig deeper. You'll start your journey in the Catalan capital Barcelona. Your focus here will undoubtedly be the stunning works of Gaudi, but you'll also get your first taste for tapas culture. Next, you'll visit San Sebastian, in the Basque region. With more Michelin star restaurants per capita than anywhere in the world, this is a foodie heaven. Not to mention the pintxos (it's Basque for tapas) or the Rioja wine region on its doorstep. The metropolis of Madrid comes next. If its grandeur isn't enough, then a day trip to Toledo, the UNESCO-listed "city of three cultures" will surely impress. You end your trip in Malaga, a coastal city in Andalusia that is perfectly situated for visits to such gems as Cordoba or Granada.

In addition to the tours included we can arrange a number of excursions based on your own interests. All of our tours are custom, and this is just a sample meant to give an idea of what our trips are like, and the opportunities our destinations provide.

One of our team members in the region will be available to you leading up to and during your trip to answer any questions and arrange additional local services. You will receive access to your Guest Page, with its information on the best these destinations have to offer, including things to see and do, and other inside tips from restaurant recommendations to tipping advice. Upon your arrival, we will provide you with a local SIM that you can use to reach your local JayWay contact throughout your trip. In all of our destinations, we offer a variety of memorable 3-5 star accommodation options, including boutique hotels, charming B&Bs, and ornate palacios. With our first-hand experience, we can ensure they are all clean, comfortable, and centrally located, with local ambience.

Barcelona is a city with a big historic legacy. Its origins can be traced back to the 1st-century BC when it became the Roman colony of Barciro. Today Antoni Gaudí’s Modernist architecture has become the main attraction for visitors from all over the world. Barcelona has two UNESCO listings covering nine buildings. Seven of them are by Gaudi! Despite its age, a youthful, energetic city vibe can be felt in all Barcelona’s quarters. Embrace your hidden love of Gothic aesthetics followed by Catalan cuisine with a private chef and finish your evening with a ramble on La Rambla, the heart of social Barcelona. So whether you feel like a picnic overlooking the beach-fronted La Estrella Herida, a private tapas tour throughout the city, or a stroll through the Gaudi-inspired Park Güell, there is something for everyone!

San Sebastián is rightfully known as one of the most beautiful cities in northern Spain. It flourished in the early 20th century as a holiday resort for aristocrats and to this day attracts visitors to its famed beaches. San Sebastian is also a haven for foodies. A landmark for gastronomy, San Sebastian has more Michelin Star restaurants per capita than anywhere else in Europe! But it’s not all about white table cloths and silver service. The bars in the quaint Old Town have the most delicious pintxos – the local take on tapas – which you must try while in San Sebastian. San Sebastian’s best-kept secret might be its cider houses. The cavernous sidrerias are where the locals can be found of an evening.

The capital, as well as the geographical and cultural center of Spain, Madrid has long enthralled visitors. Since Prince Phillip II made Madrid the capital in the mid 16th century the city has become home to the largest functioning royal palace in Europe, as well as many museums, cafes, parks, universities, and cultural attractions. Although tourism in the city is growing, Spain's many other attractions mean the city is able to maintain its authenticity and you'll find local character and charm in each of its different neighborhoods. Madrid is perfectly located as a base for day trips to UNESCO-listed towns in central Spain and well connected for traveling onward to any corner of the country for further exploration.

Awarded with UNESCO World Heritage protection in 1986, Toledo undoubtedly should be your first-day trip destination after having discovered the major points of interest in Madrid. Often overlooked as just an airport city, Malaga is eminently worthy of inclusion in a tour of Spain that includes Andalucia. The holidaymakers who head for the seaside resort towns are missing out on something special. Malaga is one of the oldest cities in Europe and was founded by the Phoenicians in 770 BC. The Alcazaba of Malaga is a must for anyone visiting this historic city. It could be considered as a prototype of the Alhambra in Granada. The historic port has a vast array of traditional and contemporary cuisines and is a short walk from the city center. Malaga has a lively tapas scene too. Known as the birth town of Pablo Picasso, his home was historically preserved as a museum and is easily accessible in the city center of Malaga.
