Travel and LeisureFodorsUSA TodayNew York TimesNational GeographicWashington PostVogue

The ideal way to explore many of Spain's idiosyncratic regions. This ten-day trip is the perfect introduction and we believe the inspiration for many return trips to dig deeper. You'll start your journey in the Catalan capital Barcelona. Your focus here will undoubtedly be the stunning works of Gaudi, but you'll also get your first taste for tapas culture. Next, you'll visit San Sebastian, in the Basque region. With more Michelin star restaurants per capita than anywhere in the world, this is a foodie heaven. Not to mention the pintxos (it's Basque for tapas) or the Rioja wine region on its doorstep. The metropolis of Madrid comes next. If its grandeur isn't enough, then a day trip to Toledo, the UNESCO-listed "city of three cultures" will surely impress. You end your trip in Seville, to this day a seat of the Spanish Royal Family and an ideal base to explore Andalusia, should you be able to tear yourself away from the charms of the city.

In addition to the tours included we can arrange a number of excursions based on your own interests. All of our tours are custom, and this is just a sample meant to give an idea of what our trips are like, and the opportunities our destinations provide.

One of our team members in the region will be available to you leading up to and during your trip to answer any questions and arrange additional local services. You will receive access to your Guest Page, with its information on the best these destinations have to offer, including things to see and do, and other inside tips from restaurant recommendations to tipping advice. Upon your arrival, we will provide you with a local SIM that you can use to reach your local JayWay contact throughout your trip. In all of our destinations, we offer a variety of memorable 3-5 star accommodation options, including boutique hotels, charming B&Bs, and ornate palacios. With our first-hand experience, we can ensure they are all clean, comfortable, and centrally located, with local ambience.

Day 3 - Your Second Full Day in Barcelona

In Gaudi's Footsteps

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

Gaudi's ideas shaped the way of thinking about architecture for a whole generation. His influence on Catalan modernism was immense, creating a unique style that many have tried to replicate. Of the 10 most visited attractions in Barcelona, 4 are buildings by Gaudi. With its undulating façade and surrealist sculptural roof, Antoni Gaudi’s Casa Mila appears more organic than artificial, as if it were carved straight from the ground. Known as La Pedrera, the quarry, the building is the best example of the Modernist movement, Spain’s version of Art Nouveau. The inspiring imagination of Antoni Gaudí undoubtedly reveals itself in one of his most poetic and artistic designs for a building, Casa Batlló. His synthesis of animal shapes, vine-like curves, hints of bone and skeleton, and his use of lustrous colored bits of glazed ceramic and glass create a masterpiece that will forever astonish its observers. Parc Güell is a park designed by Antoni Gaudí upon the request of Count Eusebi Güell, who wanted to build a stylish park for the aristocrats of Barcelona. Gaudi himself inhabited one of the houses for some time. The house is now a museum showcasing some of Gaudí's work. The park is a busy tourist attraction in Barcelona. Construction of the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família began in 1882, and the temple is still under construction, with completion expected in 2026. It is perhaps the best-known structure of Catalan Modernism, drawing over three million visitors annually. Gaudi worked on the project until he died in 1926 in a tragic tram accident. We offer two ways to explore the works of Gaudí with a local architect (so come prepared with questions!) – take your pick of joining a small group tour of like-minded architecture enthusiasts or taking a private tour with just you and the guide.

San Sebastián is rightfully known as one of the most beautiful cities in northern Spain. It flourished in the early 20th century as a holiday resort for aristocrats and to this day attracts visitors to its famed beaches. San Sebastian is also a haven for foodies. A landmark for gastronomy, San Sebastian has more Michelin Star restaurants per capita than anywhere else in Europe! But it’s not all about white table cloths and silver service. The bars in the quaint Old Town have the most delicious pintxos – the local take on tapas – which you must try while in San Sebastian. San Sebastian’s best-kept secret might be its cider houses. The cavernous sidrerias are where the locals can be found of an evening.
