The capital of Portugal since 1255 when King Alphonse II moved the court from Coimbra, Lisbon is not only regarded as one of the sunniest of the European capitals but one with a rich history on display. The soft white limestone facades of the oldest neighborhood, Alfama, welcome tourists, and locals, calling to them through the medium of Fado music drifting wistfully from the abundance of bars, or the smell of petisco (Portuguese tapas) wafting from a myriad of restaurants. Like its ancient rival Porto, Lisbon rests on mighty rivers originating from the eastern Spanish highlands. Remnants of human settlements in the vicinity of the city date back to the Neolithic period and since that time successful invasions have resulted in occupation by Carthaginians, Romans, Suebi, Visigoths, and Moors. The rich tapestry of Lisbon’s history has been woven into the very fabric of the city.

Fatima, Nazare & Obidos Small Group Tour

Fatima/Nazare and Obidos Small Group Tour

Please ask your travel advisor for the cost to add this to your package

On this tour, you will be exploring the central-west part of Portugal. You will start in Fatima, one of Catholicism’s major shrines where it is said that the Virgin Mary appeared to three children – Lúcia (10 years old), Francisco (9 years old), and Jacinta (7 years old). At the sanctuary, there is a segment of the Berlin Wall, a tribute to ‘God’s part’ in the fall of communism. After leaving Fatima, you will ride west to Nazaré for a lunch break, embracing the cliffs and providing stunning views. In Nazaré, you will also get the smell of grilled fish and realize that you are actually in a fishing village. Nazare is one of the most picturesque Portuguese coastal cities and is now also one of the most popular places to surf in the world. The tour then continues through the historic town of Obidos. The town was taken from the Moorish army in 1148 and, since that time, was part of the dowry of several queens of Portugal; that’s why it is often called the Queen's town. Nowadays, Obidos still has a medieval town completely inside the old walls, with cobblestone streets and flower-bedecked houses. Obidos is also known for the Ginjinha, a sweet cherry liqueur that you can taste. After that, you will have some free time to explore the scenic town before returning to Lisbon.

Although it may not be the most famous city in Spain, Seville is considered by many to be the most beautiful. You get a sense of its unique charms as you meander through winding streets surrounded by characteristic white and pipeclay yellow walls of the painted buildings. Due to the hustle and bustle of port activity, 16th century Seville was the richest city in Spain. Goods of all splendor brought from the New World arrived at the feet of awestruck locals. Venture further into the city to marvel at the largest Gothic Temple in the world, Seville Cathedral, or try to imagine the sense of pride and awe felt by locals for hundreds of years as they gazed up at The Giralda Tower. This minaret was built in the Almohad period and was, for centuries, the tallest building in Spain and constructed as part of a Grand Mosque.

Sagrada Familia is not Barcelona's only church

Suggestion to explore on your own

While Sagrada Familia finally received its consecration from Pope Benedict in 2010, Barcelona boasts more than just this iconic church. Locals often favor Santa Maria del Mar as their top place of worship. Despite enduring a significant earthquake in 1428 and a devastating 11-day fire in July 1936, evident in the lingering scorch marks, the church stands resilient. With towering columns set 43 feet apart and expansive stained glass windows, the interior creates a celestial ambiance. Barcelona Cathedral offers another unique encounter, reflecting centuries of history with Nordic-inspired elements, dating back to the 11th century, and recent reconstructions using the original Montserrat stone. Explore the cloister with 13 contented geese and the crypt dedicated to the 13-year-old martyr Eulàlia. For stunning views of the Old City, it's worth paying the small fee to take the lift to the cathedral's roof.
