Ljubljana enjoys a central position, making it the ideal base for exploring the rest of Slovenia. It is a crossroads culturally due to its location. On one hand, you can see its Central European influences, because of its time within the Austro-Hungarian empire, in the city's architecture and language. On the other hand there is a strong Mediterranean and Balkan influence which is brought out in their laid back approach and the city's café culture. People are often surprised how westernized and advanced Slovenia is putting it more in a class with its Austrian neighbors than its Eastern European and Balkan counterparts. The surrounding areas of the city are packed with natural beauty and cultural sights bearing witness to the city's dynamic history. There is diverse range of places to satisfy culinary desires as the local cuisine is also heavily influenced by its neighbors in all directions. Wine lovers will find Slovenia to be a hidden gem. One of the best ways we have found to get to know Ljubljana and Slovenian cuisine at the same time is on a food tour, which will take you on a gastronomic tour of the whole country while walking around the center. The city layout is tourist friendly as the Old Town has an ever expanding pedestrian zone and a great way to see Ljubljana is by bike taking advantage of the numerous bike lanes spread out across the city.

Day 1

Day 1 - Arrival in Ljubljana

When you arrive at Ljubljana's airport, you'll be greeted and taken to your centrally located accommodations.

Castle Views

Suggestion to explore on your own

Start your stay in Ljubljana by taking a funicular or a short walk to reach Ljubljana Castle, with its stunning views of the city below and mountains beyond. Be sure to visit the museum, and if you can, catch a sunset from the castle grounds, especially the tower. End your day on a happy note with a dinner in one of the restaurants within the castle walls. We are confident to say that you will go to bed feeling happy and in love with "the loved one," the literal translation of "Ljubljana."

Ljubljana Private Walking Tour

Ljubljana Private Walking Tour

Included in your vacation package price.

Ljubljana never fails to win over visitors with its charm and natural beauty. Most of the Old Town has been converted to a pedestrian-only zone, so it’s easy to explore the highlights on foot. Explore medieval Ljubljana, from its culture and unusual sites, to its stories and legends, with a local guide. You’ll discover its baroque and Secession architecture, along with the works of the architect Joze Plecnik. You’ll walk across the center's charming bridges and through the open market and enter the impressive cathedral. Your guide will take you through Old Town, and along the banks of the river Ljubljanica. Learn all about the legend of the city's origin and visit the main attractions. By the end of the tour, you'll understand how Ljubljana, "The Beloved One," earned its name.

Mix with the Locals

Suggestion to explore on your own

Today we suggest going undercover and becoming a Ljubljančan/Ljubljančanka for a day. Try to embrace as much of Ljubljana's atmosphere as possible and don’t worry about revealing yourself as a newbie. The locals will already know and maybe will even share some stories with you if you’re nice enough. Start by venturing into Vodnik Square, where you’ll find an excellent central market with fresh fruits and vegetables, local specialties and crafts that make wonderful souvenirs. Around the corner from the market, find a bar at the riverbank to drink some coffee. It is obligatory in Ljubljana to drink at least two coffees a day. Once you’ve fed your bodies, it’s time to feed your soul, which is why we encourage you to discover great architecture all around you and get lost into the streets of Ljubljana.

Day 3

Day 3 - Your Second Full Day in Ljubljana

Lake Bled & Bohinj Self-Guided Day Trip

Suggestion to explore on your own

On this day the rent a car representative will drop off a car for you. This generally has manual transmission, but can be upgraded to automatic for an additional fee (GPS can also be added for an extra charge). Slovenia is relatively small, so it’s easy enough to explore. From Ljubljana, our top recommendation is a day trip to Lake Bled and the stunning surrounding area. Here you can spend the afternoon enjoying the gorgeous glacial lake and medieval castle situated on an island. This place is a Slovenian icon, and it’s easy to see why. The entire town has a fairy tale atmosphere that will astound you. It's about a 45 minute drive from Ljubljana so you'll be there in no time at all. You can stroll along the alluring jade water, hike through the surrounding forests, or even pilot a boat to float romantically over the lake. No trip to Slovenia is complete without a visit to this tranquil setting. If you like fish dishes, try the fresh local trout. Other places of note are Vintgar Gorge, a 1.6 km long gorge with steep depths and vertical walls which we recommend visiting after seeing the center of Bled, where you can have lunch and a short walk to take some pictures. Be sure to try rich local cream cake! After the gorge you could visit another even more picturesque and peaceful lake, Bohinj in the heart of the Triglav National Park before heading back to Ljubljana.

Day 4

Day 4 - Traveling to Rovinj by Rental Car

A morning start is recommended for your drive to Rovinj as there are some fascinating stops along the way. About halfway there, we suggest touring the Postojna caves as well as visiting the nearby Predjama Castle. Built into the side of a cliff, it is a truly marvellous sight.

Rovinj used to go by Rovigno, and to Italian-speakers it still does. This city was once part of the Republic of Venice, which is evident from the street names in Italian to the Venetian architectural flourishes, such as the bell tower that crowns the town. This laid-back spot has a full cultural calendar, with numerous festivals taking place in the warmer months. We’ll help you get to know the local culture, with possible activities like a local wine tasting, a fish cooking masterclass with a local chef, or a truffle hunting adventure in nearby Croatia. Then, to work up an appetite for your next delicious meal, you could rent bikes and cruise through the breathtaking Zlatni Rt Park. You’ll definitely want to visit the local market too. History buffs will love visiting the local cultural heritage museum, which gives great insight into the region. When you’re ready to get in the car, a day trip to Pula is always fun. This busy port town hosts a large market packed with delectable local specialities, and also boasts a Roman amphitheater. You could even arrange a full-day private tour through the gorgeous region of Istria, where more delights await you inland.

A long coastline abutting a clear blue sea, verdant nature inland, plenty of natural, historical, and cultural sights and unforgettable views from hilly villages. Yes, you're right, we're talking about Istria! One more thing which makes Istria a perfect destination is the cuisine, which reflects the geographic, historic, and climatic characteristics of the peninsula. It is based mostly on seafood, olive oil, vegetables, aromatic herbs, and very good wines. Pick one of our day tours and enjoy a fish cooking class, or even try your luck in truffle hunting.

The dishes you will prepare in this special cooking class reflect the seasonal best from Pula's fish market that day. You'll first learn how to easily clean and fillet fish and seafood. Then you'll start creating an amazing meal, including seafood pasta, seafood risotto, fish carpaccio, and more. If the weather allows, the wood-fired barbecue will be ready to receive the fish. In case of bad weather, don't worry, the oven and a good heavy-bottom pan can do miracles. And for your sweet tooth, you'll bake a traditional Istrian dessert paired with dark chocolate mousse prepared with extra virgin olive oil.

Istrian Self-Drive Tour

Suggestion to explore on your own

If you have traveled to Rovinj in a rental car, a self-driving tour of the surrounding region of Istria is an excellent way to spend a day. This is a place of romance and myth that is often compared with Tuscany. From the hills to the coasts you can see the best of the region on a pleasant drive, and also taste some of the local cuisine. The stops we recommend most are Pula, with its ancient Roman amphitheater, and the hill towns of Motovun and Groznjan. All three spots have a charm of their own and really show off the best of the region's architecture, landscape, and cuisine.

Day 7

Day 7 - Traveling to Plitvice by Rental Car

Today we suggest an early start. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Plitvice Lakes National Park is about 4 hours away and you will want to arrive there by lunchtime so you can spend your whole afternoon exploring this magnificent natural wonder. Entrance fees to the national park must be booked online at least two days in advance. If you're looking for somewhere to stop along the way, then we would suggest an early lunch in the seaside town of Opatija, it has a style quite different to Rovinj, with a Vienna-on-the-Sea vibe.

Day 8 - Traveling to Split by Rental Car

The direct journey time is a little under three hours but there are some interesting stops on your way from Plitvice to Split today. Our first suggestion would be to stop and visit Zadar, a town that's famous for its unique sea organ. The town of Sibenik is also close to the route and a quick detour to visit the UNESCO-listed cathedral might entice you. The Roman Emperor Diocletian made Split his home in the 4th Century AD, building a vast palace complex on the waterfront that stands to this day. In fact several of the accommodation options we offer in Split are nestled inside its ancient walls. These days there is an embankment in front of Diocletian's palace but the water used to go right up to the main wall. It's on this man-made strip of land that you'll find the Riva, a pedestrian promenade bustling with life. Split's UNESCO listed Old Town is contained within these old walls and is a pedestrian-only maze that it is quite easy, but fun, to get lost in. Who know what romantic hidden cafés you might find in one of the narrow streets and alleyways? To get the best out of your time in Split, however, we recommend taking a tour with a local guide. Split is very well connected for flights, with an international airport a half hour drive away and is a popular stopping point for our guests on their way between Dubrovnik and the islands of Hvar, Vis, or Korcula, all easily reached by a ferry from Split's port. If you base yourself in Split for a few days, you will find it is also perfect located for visits to some of Croatia's most stunning national parks.

Today you’ll take advantage of Hvar’s central location by visiting some of Croatia’s most unique and remote natural phenomena: The Blue and Green Caves. You’ll get a literally in-depth view after zipping to the islet of Bisevo on a speedboat. Next, you'll visit the Green Cave, where a similar effect turns the water an iridescent emerald.

A short hop will take you to the island of Vis, which for decades was a closed island due to its strategic, remote location, and military presence. There, you’ll have lunch and go for a swim at the fishing village of Komiza. With its fortifications and fishing museum, the town itself is worth exploring. The townspeople are renowned as the best fisherman in the Adriatic, having invented sturdy boats made for long journeys on the open sea. Many locals later brought their expertise and courage to the salmon fisheries of southeastern Alaska and the Puget Sound. The tour generally ends with a return to Hvar, although if time allows, there may also be a stop at the secluded coves and beaches of the Pakleni Archipelago, just off the coast of Hvar’s main town.

A walking tour of Old Town will take you to its elegant main street and most of its most important sights: The Franciscan Monastery, Onofrio’s Fountains, Sponza Palace, Orlando’s Column, the City Bell Tower, the Church of St. Blaise (the city’s patron saint), and Rector’s Palace, the seat of the Republic, and the Cathedral. This is the perfect orientational tour of the Old town and will give you the best insight into the rich history of Dubrovnik. You’ll learn what there is to see and do in Dubrovnik and how to get around.

After Your Tour: City Walls, Cable Car and Lokrum Island

Suggestion to explore on your own

As well as taking a short walking tour of Dubrovnik's old town with a private guide, which will tell you all about the city's history and get you oriented, there are a few other must-dos when in this breathtaking city and all involve getting a different perspective on the magnificent walled Old Town.

Continue your day in Dubrovnik after the tour with a ride on the cable car up Mount Srd' to take in the views. You'll find the bottom station of the cable car by exiting the city through the Buža Gate. Walking the circumference of the ancient city walls themselves is a way to get another view of the town. It's a bit of a climb to the top of the Minceta Tower, but highly recommended.

If you also want to see Dubrovnik from afar, then take a boat trip to Lokrum Island, an oasis of nature and tranquility just ten minutes from the Old Town harbor. This island has peacocks and monastery ruins hidden among its pine, cypress, and olive trees. You will also find a botanical garden here.

The Best the Sea Can Offer

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

Why not spend a day exploring some of the finer things in Croatian life, like wine, seafood and boats? Oyster fans should undoubtedly head for Peljesac, renowned for having the best oysters in Croatia. There you'll find gorgeous scenery and blue bays, and taste excellent wine from Croatia’s most famous wine region. You’ll stop at two wineries for tastings and take a 10-meter boat to an oyster and mussel farm, where you’ll have a light lunch of excellent, fresh shellfish. Or perhaps you would rather spend a day on the sea, cruising around the Elaphite Islands with a private speedboat and skipper at your disposal?

Your trip will include two stops in local wineries for tastings and the small village of Hodilje, where you’ll ride a boat to a private island. There, at a family-owned oyster and mussel farm, you'll have the opportunity to taste fresh oysters, with a welcome brandy and light lunch of mussels. After dining, you’ll make your way back to the mainland, then be driven to your accommodations.
