Italy & Austria: A Memorable Duet

Who hasn’t heard of the famous Italian temperament, best expressed in the broad smiles of locals who are ready to open their hearts and homes to you in the gorgeous land that graced the world with pizza, fashion, and Vespas? On the other hand, is there anyone who hasn’t dreamt of the beautiful landscapes and stunning snow-capped peaks of the Austrian countryside – immortalized in the Sound of Music all-time classic movie – or the aristocratic flair of Vienna City? Instead of planning two separate trips to Italy and Austria, an itinerary that combines both countries is the best way to appreciate the diversity of Europe, treating you with a travel experience to remember.

Just want to hit the highlights?

Start your epic journey in Rome, the Eternal City with many a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a city steeped in history yet modern and exciting at the same time. Hear stories of the mighty Roman Empire at some of the top Rome attractions, like the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, walk up the Spanish Steps for panoramic views of the Italian capital, climb up beautiful gardens to catch the golden hour, mingle with locals in the Trastevere area, and remember to toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain to guarantee a second – or fifth – visit to Rome. Don’t overlook the treasures of the Vatican City, such as the Vatican Museum and St. Peter’s Basilica, before you move on to the next Italian jewel, the dream city built on water. Venice is probably the most extraordinary city in Italy, if not the world, and no Italy tour would be complete without a stop here. From the marvelous St. Mark Square to the emblematic Bridge of Sighs, from enjoying spectacular views of the Grand Canal on a gondola or boat ride to stepping inside an authentic Murano Glass Factory, make sure you don’t rush through Venice. No matter its small size, Venice deserves all the time you can spare, taking in its magic and savoring its scents before you head to the Austrian gem that is the Baroque city of Salzburg, Mozart’s birthplace. With its picture-perfect historic center and fantastic scenery, Salzburg is the ideal start to your Austria journey before you head to the elegant capital. With its classical music heritage, unique cafés, and grand architecture, Vienna is a city like no other in the heart of Central Europe. Experience a day in the lives of royals at the impressive Schönbrunn Palace, the main summer residence of the Habsburg rulers, watch an emotional performance at the Vienna State Opera, or walk through the Imperial Apartments of the people’s beloved Empress Sisi at Hofburg Palace. Don’t forget that Vienna is also the best gateway to the prettiest capital cities in Eastern Europe, such as Prague in the Czech Republic and Budapest in Hungary, in case you feel like adding more destinations to your tailor-made tour.

But your Austria and Italy adventure doesn’t stop here. Our expertise in Italy and Austria can take you beyond the most popular destinations these two countries have to offer, some of which are among the most visited cities in Europe. In Italy, add a few days to explore the lesser-known region of Umbria, hike through the ravishing landscape of the Dolomites, take in the utter natural beauty of Lake Como, or discover the magic hiding in the rolling hills of Val d’Orcia in the Tuscan countryside. Similarly, in Austria, reach out to touch the country’s authentic side in Graz or Innsbruck.

Frequently Asked Questions about Travel to Italy & Austria

What is the best way to travel to Italy and Austria?

Most of our guests travel to Italy and Austria from the US by air, unless they are already traveling in a neighboring European country.

Where should I start my tour of Austria and Italy?

Starting in Rome, Venice, or Vienna makes sense, depending on your route. Buying an open-jaw ticket is usually only a little more than a standard return, and we’ll include any intra-European flights in your package. Our travel advisors will help you pick the best flights for your itinerary.

What are some must-see places in Italy and Austria?

It very much depends on your priorities. If you want to visit the most famous places, Rome, Florence, Venice, and Vienna might be top of your list. If you’ve been to Italy before but not to Austria, we can arrange a trip combining lesser-known Italian destinations such as Bologna, Siena, or Lucca with Austria’s most popular destinations, such as Vienna and Salzburg. We can build an itinerary around anything on your must-see list.

Can I customize my Italy and Austria tour?

Absolutely. That’s the whole point of working with a custom tour operator like us. We’ll work with you to tailor the perfect trip, so you can be sure you have enough time to see what you want without worrying about details, like how to get to the train station or make reservations at a local restaurant. We take care of all of that!

What do your Italy and Austria tour packages include?

Our tour packages are designed to make touring Italy and Austria effortless. From working with our travel advisors and expert trip planners to craft your ideal itinerary to the moment you get on the plane to return home, we will take care of everything. Your custom tour package will include accommodation, airport transfers, any kind of transportation between destinations, walking tours, day trips, and, most importantly, the support of our local staff in Europe. They’ll be in touch with you before your trip to finalize any details. Upon request, we can provide you with a local e-SIM so you can be in touch by phone, email, or instant message. It’s like having a tour director but still traveling independently.

How much does a private tour of Austria and Italy cost?

Our Italy and Austria packages start from around $350 per person per day. The largest element is often accommodation, but private full-day tours can increase the cost, too. All our sample itineraries have a price guide function to give you an idea of the cost for different levels of accommodation, month of travel, and number of travelers.

Do your Austria and Italy tours have a set departure date?

No. As our tours are completely tailor-made to your needs and preferences, you choose the dates and destinations you want to visit.

When is the best time of year to visit Italy and Austria?

The best time of year for your trip will depend on what you want to do. Both countries can be great places to travel year-round. Keep in mind that locals tend to leave the cities in peak summer, heading for the coast or mountains. If you want to swim, you should travel between mid-June and the end of September. On the other hand, if skiing is your thing, you should plan your trip between December and mid-April. Winter is also ideal if you want to experience Vienna’s famous Christmas markets. If you are more interested in sightseeing and avoiding the hottest time of year, mid-July and August could be too warm for you. High season on the islands and in coastal destinations like the Amalfi Coast in Italy, is the opposite in the cities. Therefore, while the summer months of July and August are the most expensive times of year to travel to summer hotspots, the cities, provided the heat doesn’t bother you, can be a good deal.

Can I self-drive on an Italy and Austria trip?

We can arrange rental cars for all or part of the trip, but bear in mind that dropping off a rental in another country incurs high one-way fees, and taking a car on a ferry adds significantly to the cost. Your JayWay trip planner can arrange separate rentals where needed so you can avoid unnecessary expenses and have the freedom to get around by car when you need to. In Italy and Austria’s countryside, a car is useful. Should your trip be mostly city-based, though, trains and private transfers will be a lot more convenient.

What are some popular excursions and day trips on your Austria and Italy tours?

Among all the guided tours we offer in Italy and Austria, many of our most popular are culinary-based, whether food tours or cooking classes. Yet, apart from these immersive experiences, it’s impossible to overlook the importance of seeing the main sites like the Vatican City, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, and the Grand Canal in Italy or Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna. A guided tour of the Sound of Music filming locations in and around Salzburg shouldn’t be missed either. Visiting these sites on a private or small-group tour with a knowledgeable tour guide can render your experience all the more rewarding.

Can I take a free day or two with no tours?

Absolutely. Your Italy and Austria itinerary will be customized to your wishes. You don’t have to fill every day, and we encourage leaving some free time aside – even if it’s just a free afternoon – simply to appreciate the destinations you’re visiting. For example, after a morning city tour, nothing beats getting lost in Venice’s narrow streets, with just the occasional glimpse of the marvelous St. Mark Campanile and encounter with the Grand Canal to guide you, or indulging in a cup of heart-warming hot chocolate paired with decadent desserts at Vienna’s most historic cafés for the rest of the day.

Do you sell cruises that include Italy and Austria?

We don’t sell cruises in Italy and Austria. We believe you enjoy a far richer experience by spending as much time as possible on land, soaking up the culture, and enjoying the local cuisine while appreciating a more responsible type of travel. So many of the riches of both countries lay far from cruise ports that to try and visit on a cruise would short-change you on the delights you should be relishing.

How long do I need for an Italy and Austria trip?

This is mostly a question of how many places you want to see. Each time you move to another destination, you’ll spend half a day traveling. For this reason, we recommend three nights in most destinations. Adding fewer destinations to your itinerary means less time and money spent moving between them and more time soaking up the atmosphere and seeing the sights.

Can I take a train from Italy to Austria?

The fastest train ride between Italy and Austria is the high-speed train that connects Venice to Vienna. The journey time is seven and a half hours.

How can I get to Austria from Italy, and vice versa?

The quickest way to travel between Italy and Austria is by air. Flights between major tourist destinations in both countries are quick – maximum two hours – and relatively cheap thanks to several low-cost airlines providing service. To simplify your planning, we can include these intra-European flights in your vacation package.

Is the Euro used in both Italy and Austria?

Yes, thankfully, the Euro is the currency of both Italy and Austria, so any coins and banknotes you have left after the first country can be used in the second.
