An itinerary across Italy, France, and Spain is a journey for all the senses, an experience that’s sure to fascinate you with its diversity and unparalleled moments.

Just want to hit the highlights?

Start this once-in-a-lifetime travel experience in the Eternal City. With its rich history and remarkable architecture, Rome boasts many a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Climb up the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum for a look into ancient Rome, then do the same at the Spanish Steps for a splendid view of modern-day Rome spreading before your stunned eyes. Visit the world’s smallest independent state, the Vatican City, and explore its treasures, from the Vatican Museums to the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel. Before you leave Italy’s capital city behind, toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain to make sure you’ll be back in the Italian capital before too long. Continue to one of the most popular destinations in Italy, one that never fails to amaze. Miraculously built entirely on water, Venice is a sight for sore eyes with its distinct architecture, countless canals, and picture-perfect sunsets. End your Italian adventure in Milan, the shiny capital of fashion, before you head to an equally fashionable city, this time in France.

Paris, the celebrated City of Light, awaits to seduce you with its beauty as you marvel at world-famous attractions, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, the Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Arc de Triomphe. And if sightseeing takes up most of your mornings, the rest of the day should be reserved for strolls through the narrow streets of the quaint French capital for this is where pure magic lies hidden. Montmartre and the Latin Quarter are only a few of the Parisian neighborhoods you can explore to discover the romance of Paris. Your next destination is Southern France. More specifically, the French Riviera awaits to wash your days in bright sunlight and fill you with the scents of the Mediterranean Coast as you follow in the footsteps of the rich and famous in and around Nice.

After the cosmopolitan vibes of the Cote d’Azur, the down-to-earth allure of Barcelona is the perfect welcome to Spain. From the Picasso Museum to Gaudi’s architectural masterpieces – like La Sagrada Familia – to the wonders that await at the top of Montjuic Hill, Barcelona has no shortage of fantastic attractions and activities to keep you happy and busy for as many days as you have to spare. All good things must come to an end, but before they do, you still have Madrid to enjoy. No matter its popularity, the Spanish capital remains an authentic city where locals and tourists co-exist in total harmony even in the most popular spots, such as Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol, the city’s busiest squares. Of course, when in Madrid, don’t miss the chance to admire world-class art at the Prado Museum, one of the world’s most remarkable art exhibitions.

Or dig deeper?

But your journey continues. Our expertise in Italy, France, and Spain goes beyond the largest cities, which means that you can go off the beaten path in these three countries, exploring lesser-known towns and villages, thus immersing in authentic experiences and each country’s unique culture in the best way. In Italy, add a few days to explore the gorgeous region of Umbria, the colorful dream that is Cinque Terre, or the Italian Riviera and eat your way through Bologna, the country’s indisputable food capital. Speaking of food, why not stop in Lyon, too? The gastronomic capital of France will give you a different perspective of European food. If you want to step inside a fairytale, the Loire Valley with its winding river and beautiful castles should be part of your itinerary as well. Once in Spain, you might want to check out the seductive region of Andalusia with its sun-drenched villages and inviting cities, like Seville and Malaga. Alternatively, an escape to Valencia is ideal if you’re eager to explore what urban Spanish life today feels like.

Frequently Asked Questions about Travel to Italy, France & Spain

What is the best way to travel to Italy, France, and Spain?

Most of our guests travel to France, Italy, and Spain from the US by air, unless they are already traveling in a neighboring European country.

Where should I start my tour of France, Spain, and Italy?

Starting in Paris, Rome, Venice, Barcelona, or Madrid makes sense, depending on your route. Buying an open-jaw ticket is usually only a little more than a standard return, and we’ll include any intra-European flights in your package. Our travel advisors will help you pick the best flights for your itinerary.

What are some must-see places in Italy, Spain, and France?

It very much depends on your priorities. If you want to visit the most famous places, Rome, Florence, Venice, Paris, Provence, the French Riviera, Barcelona, and Madrid might be top of your list. If you’ve been to Italy before but not to France or Spain, we can arrange a trip combining lesser-known Italian destinations such as Bologna, Siena, or Lucca with the most popular destinations in Spain and France, such as Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Paris, Nice, Lyon, and Normandy. We can build an itinerary around anything on your must-see list.

Can I customize my Italy, Spain, and France tour?

Absolutely. That’s the whole point of working with a custom tour operator like us. We’ll work with you to tailor the perfect trip so you can be sure you have enough time to see what you want without worrying about details, like how to get to the train station or make reservations at a local restaurant. We take care of all of that.

What do your Italy, Spain, and France tour packages include?

Our tour packages are designed to make touring France, Spain, and Italy effortless. From working with our travel advisors and expert trip planners to craft your ideal itinerary to the moment you get on the plane to return home, we will take care of everything. Your custom tour package will include accommodation, airport transfers, any kind of transportation between destinations, walking tours, day trips, and, most importantly, the support of our local staff in Europe. They’ll be in touch with you before your trip to finalize any details. Upon request, we can provide you with a local e-SIM so you can be in touch by phone, email, or instant message. It’s like having a tour director but still traveling independently.

How much does a private tour of France, Spain, and Italy cost?

Our France, Italy, and Spain packages start from around $350 per person per day. The largest element is often accommodation, but private full-day tours can increase the cost, too. All our sample itineraries have a price guide function to give you an idea of the cost for different levels of accommodation, months of travel, and number of travelers.

Do your France, Spain, and Italy tours have a set departure date?

No. As our tours are completely tailor-made to your needs and preferences, you choose the dates and destinations you want to visit.

When is the best time of year to visit Italy, Spain, and France?

The best time of year for your trip will depend on what you want to do. All three countries can be great places to travel year-round. Keep in mind that locals tend to leave the cities in peak summer, heading for the coast or mountains. If you want to swim, you should travel between mid-June and the end of September. If you are more interested in sightseeing and avoiding the hottest time of year, mid-July and August could be too warm for you. High season on the islands and in coastal destinations, like the Amalfi Coast in Italy, Palma de Mallorca in Spain, and the Cote d’Azur in France, is the opposite in the cities. Therefore, while the summer months of July and August are the most expensive times of year to travel to summer hotspots, the cities, provided the heat doesn’t bother you, can be a good deal.

Can I self-drive on an Italy, Spain, and France trip?

We can arrange rental cars for all or part of the trip, but bear in mind that dropping off a rental in another country incurs high one-way fees, and taking a car on a ferry adds significantly to the cost. Your JayWay trip planner can arrange separate rentals where needed so you can avoid unnecessary expenses and have the freedom to get around by car when you need to. In the countryside of Italy, France, and Spain, a car is useful. Should your trip be mostly city-based, though, a train ride or a private transfer will be a lot more convenient.

What are some popular excursions and day trips on your France, Spain, and Italy tours?

Among all the guided tours we offer in France, Spain, and Italy, many of our most popular are culinary-based, whether food tours or cooking classes. Yet, it’s impossible to overlook the importance of seeing the main sites like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, and the Grand Palace of Versailles in Paris, La Sagrada Familia and Park Guell in Barcelona, the Prado Museum in Madrid, the Vatican City, the Colosseum, and the Roman Forum in Rome, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and the Grand Canal in Venice. Visiting these sites on a private or small-group tour or day trip with a knowledgeable tour guide can render your experience all the more rewarding.

Can I take a free day or two with no tours?

Absolutely. Your Italy, Spain, and France itinerary will be customized to your wishes. You don’t have to fill every day, and we encourage leaving some free time aside – even if it’s just a free afternoon or early evening – simply to appreciate the destinations you’re visiting. Getting lost in Venice’s narrow streets, with just the occasional glimpse of St Mark’s Campanile and encounter with the Grand Canal to guide you, lazing in the sun along Barcelona’s long sandy beach, and mingling with locals at the quaintest Parisian neighborhoods, all these offer you the unique opportunity to get acquainted with Italy, France, and Spain in an unparalleled way.

Do you sell cruises that include Italy, Spain, and France?

We don’t sell cruises in France, Italy, and Spain. We believe you enjoy a far richer experience by spending as much time as possible on land, soaking up the culture, and enjoying the local cuisine while appreciating a more responsible type of travel. So many of the riches of all these three countries lay far from cruise ports that to try and visit on a cruise would short-change you on the delights you should be relishing.

How long do I need for an Italy, Spain, and France trip?

This is mostly a question of how many places you want to see. Each time you move to another destination, you’ll spend half a day traveling. For this reason, we recommend three nights in most destinations. Adding fewer destinations to your itinerary means less time and money spent moving between them and more time soaking up the atmosphere and seeing the sights.

Can I travel by train between Italy, Spain, and France?

There are train connections between Northern Italy and France. The high-speed train that connects Milan to Paris takes between six and seven hours. On the other hand, traveling from Milan to Nice by train takes about five hours. High-speed trains connect major cities in Spain and France. There are direct high-speed trains between Paris and Barcelona, but, at six and a half hours, journey time could be a deal-breaker. The direct railway connection between Lyon and Barcelona, though, takes about five hours. As far as Italy and Spain are concerned, there are no direct trains connecting the two countries. Therefore, journey times by train between Spain and Italy are far from ideal.

How can I travel between these three countries?

The quickest way to travel between France, Italy, and Spain is by air. Flights between major tourist destinations in all three countries are quick – maximum two hours – and relatively cheap thanks to several low-cost airlines providing service. To simplify your planning, we can include these intra-European flights in your vacation package.

Is the Euro used in Spain, Italy, and France?

Yes, thankfully, the Euro is the currency of all three countries. Therefore, any coins and banknotes you have left after the first country you visit can be used in the other two.
