Italy & Spain: Gems of Europe

Italy and Spain complement each other perfectly with their unique and vibrant cultural legacies. Exploring these two countries will undoubtedly broaden your perspective on European culture and its diverse characteristics.

Just want to hit the highlights?

Begin your unforgettable journey in Italy’s capital city, Rome, and its historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire the ancient Colosseum, wander through the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, toss a coin at the Trevi Fountain, and snap a photo at the famous Spanish Steps. Of course, don’t forget to explore the spiritual heart of the Vatican City in St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel with a guided tour of the Vatican Museums. From the Eternal City, continue north to Florence to immerse yourselves in Renaissance art at the Uffizi Gallery, marvel at Michelangelo’s David, and people-watch at Piazza della Signoria, the iconic square dominated by the famous Palazzo Vecchio, before you watch the sunset from the unique vantage point that is Ponte Vecchio. Say arrivederci to Italy from the emblematic Piazza San Marco in Venice, after a visit to an authentic Murano glass factory and a gondola or boat ride that will inevitably make you soak in the city’s romantic atmosphere.

Or dig deeper?

But that’s just the opening chapter. Our expertise in Italy and Spain doesn’t end with some of the biggest and most famous cities. In Italy, Tuscany captivates with its undulating hills, ancient vineyards, and picturesque medieval towns with quaint narrow streets, embodying the essence of scenic Italian beauty. But the region has no shortage of iconic landmarks either, with the Leaning Tower of Pisa topping your sightseeing list. Lake Como, one of the most beautiful lakes in Italy, and the surrounding villages invite you to step inside a fairy tale while Puglia showcases the charm of Italy’s heel with its whitewashed hill towns, Mediterranean coast, and delicious food. Not to mention the towns of Cinque Terre, these bijou gems perched on the rocks, waiting to dazzle you with their colorful facades. In Spain, Andalusia’s allure continues beyond the well-known Seville with its vibrant flamenco culture, Moorish architecture, and sun-soaked olive groves, offering a dive into the soul of southern Spain. The Basque country – with its coastal San Sebastian and Bilbao – can act as your base for inland exploration of the Rioja wine region.

Frequently Asked Questions about Travel to Italy & Spain

What is the best way to travel to Italy and Spain?

Most of our guests travel to Italy and Spain from the US by air, unless they are already traveling in a neighboring European country.

Where should I start my tour of Spain and Italy?

Starting in Rome, Venice, Barcelona, or Madrid makes sense, depending on your route. Buying an open-jaw ticket is usually only a little more than a standard return, and we’ll include any intra-European flights in your package. Our travel advisors will help you pick the best flights for your itinerary.

What are some must-see places in Italy and Spain?

It very much depends on your priorities. If you want to visit the most famous places, Rome, Florence, Venice, Barcelona, and Madrid might be top of your list. If you’ve been to Italy before but not to Spain, we can arrange a trip combining lesser-known Italian destinations, like Assisi, Lecce, or Lucca, with the most popular Spanish cities, such as Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville. We can build an itinerary around anything on your must-see list.

Can I customize my Italy and Spain tour?

Absolutely. That’s the whole point of working with a custom tour operator like us. We’ll work with you to tailor the perfect trip, so you can be sure you have enough time to see what you want without worrying about details, like how to get to the train station or make reservations at a local restaurant. We take care of all of that!

What do your Italy and Spain tour packages include?

Our tour packages are designed to make touring Italy and Spain effortless. From working with our travel advisors and expert trip planners to craft your ideal itinerary to the moment you get on the plane to return home, we will take care of everything. Your custom tour package will include accommodation, airport transfers, any kind of transportation between destinations, walking tours, day trips, and, most importantly, the support of our local staff in Europe. They’ll be in touch with you before your trip to finalize any details. Upon request, we can provide you with a local e-SIM so you can be in touch by phone, email, or instant message. It’s like having a tour director but still traveling independently.

How much does a private tour of Spain and Italy cost?

Our Italy and Spain packages start from around $350 per person per day. The largest element is often accommodation, but private full-day tours can increase the cost, too. All our sample itineraries have a price guide function to give you an idea of the cost for different levels of accommodation, month of travel, and number of travelers.

Do your Spain and Italy tours have a set departure date?

No. As our tours are completely tailor-made to your needs and preferences, you choose the dates and destinations you want to visit.

When is the best time of year to visit Italy and Spain?

The best time of year for your trip will depend on what you want to do. Both countries can be great places to travel year-round. Keep in mind that locals tend to leave the cities in peak summer, heading for the coast or mountains. If you want to swim, you should travel between mid-June and the end of September. If you are more interested in sightseeing and avoiding the hottest time of year, mid-July and August could be too warm for you. High season on the islands and in coastal destinations, like Palma de Mallorca in Spain or the Amalfi Coast in Italy, is the opposite in the cities. Therefore, while the summer months of July and August are the most expensive times of year to travel to summer hotspots, the cities, provided the heat doesn’t bother you, can be a good deal.

Can I self-drive on an Italy and Spain trip?

We can arrange rental cars for all or part of the trip (though we recommend not having a car in big cities). Do bear in mind that dropping off a rental in another country incurs high one-way fees, and taking a car on a ferry adds significantly to the cost. Your JayWay trip planner can arrange separate rentals where needed so you can avoid unnecessary expenses and have the freedom to get around by car when you need to. In Italy and Spain’s countryside, a car is useful. Should your trip be mostly city-based, though, a train ride or a private transfer will be a lot more convenient.

What are some popular excursions and day trips on your Spain and Italy tours?

Among all the guided tours we offer in Italy and Spain, many of our most popular are culinary-based, whether food tours or cooking classes. Yet, apart from these immersive experiences, it’s impossible to overlook the importance of seeing the main sites like the Vatican City, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, and the Grand Canal in Italy or La Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Madrid’s Plaza Mayor and Prado Museum, and Seville’s Cathedral and Plaza de Espana in Spain. Visiting these sites on a private or small-group tour with a knowledgeable tour guide can render your experience all the more rewarding.

Can I take a free day or two with no tours?

Absolutely. Your Italy and Spain itinerary will be customized to your wishes. You don’t have to fill every day, and we encourage leaving some free time aside – even if it’s just a free afternoon – simply to appreciate the destinations you’re visiting. For example, after a morning city tour, nothing beats getting lost in Venice’s narrow streets, with just the occasional glimpse of the marvelous St. Mark Campanile and encounter with the Grand Canal to guide you, or following in the locals’ footsteps as they play, work out, or simply laze and catch the views on Barcelona’s long sandy beach for the rest of the day.

Do you sell cruises that include Italy and Spain?

We don’t sell cruises in Italy and Spain. We believe you enjoy a far richer experience by spending as much time as possible on land, soaking up the culture, and enjoying the local cuisine while appreciating a more responsible type of travel. So many of the riches of both countries lay far from cruise ports that to try and visit on a cruise would short-change you on the delights you should be relishing.

How long do I need for an Italy and Spain trip?

This is mostly a question of how many places you want to see. Each time you move to another destination, you’ll spend half a day traveling. For this reason, we recommend three nights in most destinations. Adding fewer destinations to your itinerary means less time and money spent moving between them and more time soaking up the atmosphere and seeing the sights. If you end up realizing you’re trying to fit in too much, just visit one country, and return for the other next time. We offer single country trips too!

Can I take a train from Italy to Spain?

There are no direct trains connecting Italy to Spain. Therefore, journey times by train between Spain and Italy are far from ideal (nearly 15 hours, and 2 changes from Barcelona to Milan is the fastest option). It makes much more sense to fly.

How can I get to Spain from Italy, and vice versa?

The quickest way to travel between Italy and Spain is by air. Flights between major tourist destinations in both countries are quick – maximum two hours – and relatively cheap thanks to several low-cost airlines providing service. To simplify your planning, we can include these intra-European flights in your trip package.

Is the Euro used in both Italy and Spain?

Yes, thankfully, the Euro is the currency of both Italy and Spain, so any coins and banknotes you have left after the first country can be used in the second.
