Long beaches surrounded by stunning scenery

Founded by the Greeks 2,600 years ago, Vlore has a history as extensive as the beaches and sea caves that line the nearby coast. The city’s complex history is mirrored in its Muradie Mosque, once a Byzantine church, now distinguished by its minaret. For a truly towering view, take in the city from nearby Kanine Castle. Originally built more than 2,300 years ago, this castle's current ruins date back to the time of Justinian the Great, "the Last Roman," to guard his empire's last resurgence. Vlore itself features plenty of unremarkable concrete, so stick to its long sandy beaches, and use it as a base for exploring nearby natural parks and the Albanian Riviera, which starts just to the south.

Route for Vlore tour
Just north of Vlore, the Narta Lagoon is one of the Adriatic's best spots for bird spotting, attracting winter birds, and sitting beneath one of Europe's busiest migratory flyways. Within the lagoon, a wooden footbridge connects the mainland to Zvernec Island and its 13th century Byzantine monastery. Albania’s largest island, Sazan lies just offshore from Vlore. Visible from Italy when the weather is clear, this island is part of a large natural park that follows the coast, sheltering everything from dolphins and jackals to sea turtles and one of the Mediterranean’s last monk colonies. The natural park extends to the Karaburun Peninsula, with its many isolated beaches, sea caves, and invitingly crystal-clear waters. Head further south, and you'll find yourself in the rugged beauty of the Albanian Riviera.

What we love about Vlore

If you find yourself in busy Vlore, be sure to trade its crowds for quiet Sazan Island and its ghost town, which were once closed to the public.

The new and modern center of the Albanian Riviera, Vlore is more than just a resort town. The city center is vibrant, if a bit messy, but it shows character. I enjoyed mingling with locals and the noise on the streets is enjoyable and hectic at the same time. I liked Vlore because of the sheer variety of activities available - the most impressive to me was a ride to the city's highest point, with its endless views of the Riviera.

Where to stay in Vlore

When you're staying on the coast, ideally you want somewhere with sea views. For that reason we've picked two of the best hotels in the Vlore area, both boasting panoramic sea view rooms. One is located closer to the city, the other is a short drive away, right on the beach.

Things to do in Vlore

Second only to Durres in size of Albania's coastal cities, Vlore offers many possibilities and has a lively dining scene taking advantage of the abundance of the two seas that meet here, the Adriatic and Ionian. We've got the sightseeing basics covered with a city tour, and a boat tour to an uninhabited island, a former military base. Combine more sightseeing with relaxation by enjoying a drink with a view of Kuzum Baba castle. The Lagoon of Narta makes for a pleasant half day trip, with its wildlife, islands, and monastery.
