Croatia in 3 Years, Part 3: Central Dalmatia

10 Days / 9 Nights

Split, Sutivan, Hvar, Vis, Split

Travel and LeisureFodorsUSA TodayNew York TimesNational GeographicWashington PostVogue
This third in a series of itineraries, titled Croatia in 3 Years brings you to Central Dalmatia. Starting and ending in UNESCO-listed Split, you will first journey to Brac, for a low-key introduction to Croatian island life. There you can visit stonemasons working with the same white stone that was used in the White House in Washington D.C., enjoy time at Croatia's famous golden horn beach, and generally unwind. From there it's on to Hvar, an island synonymous with the jet set, but it's also home to some of the country's best red wine vineyards. In those wineries you'll get acquainted with Plavac Mali, a relative of Californian Zinfandel.

We may have saved the best island for last. Vis feels like a secret that you've been let in on. Its eponymous Blue Cave might get lots of visitors (yes, it's worth it!) but Vis town itself isn't so much of a draw, and the rest of the island is untouched by day-trippers. How is this place so magical? Its history as a military island is why, and strict development laws mean we won't be seeing any large hotels here any time soon. After Vis it's back to reality almost, with the historic Old town of Split, once a Roman emperor's retirement palace to be explored before you head back home.

As with all our itineraries, all our semi-independent vacation packages come with the support of our team in Croatia, including our local representative based in Split who will be in touch before and during your trip.

This itinerary can be used as a starting point for further customization. Start your trip on any date, and add nights or destinations as you wish. We've included some of our favorite excursions, but you can choose anything from the options we have available. To get a rough idea of price, you can use the Price Guide function on this page to enter the month, date, preferred star level of hotel, and number of travelers to get in an instant price estimate.

Day Stop in Split

The Roman Emperor Diocletian made Split his home in the 4th Century AD, building a vast palace complex on the waterfront that stands to this day. In fact several of the accommodation options we offer in Split are nestled inside its ancient walls. These days there is an embankment in front of Diocletian's palace but the water used to go right up to the main wall. It's on this man-made strip of land that you'll find the Riva, a pedestrian promenade bustling with life. Split's UNESCO listed Old Town is contained within these old walls and is a pedestrian-only maze that it is quite easy, but fun, to get lost in. Who know what romantic hidden cafés you might find in one of the narrow streets and alleyways? To get the best out of your time in Split, however, we recommend taking a tour with a local guide. Split is very well connected for flights, with an international airport a half hour drive away and is a popular stopping point for our guests on their way between Dubrovnik and the islands of Hvar, Vis, or Korcula, all easily reached by a ferry from Split's port. If you base yourself in Split for a few days, you will find it is also perfect located for visits to some of Croatia's most stunning national parks.

Calm and quiet, humble Sutivan is far from Croatia's crowds. This traditional village is convenient, a ten-minute drive from the island of Brac's main town and ferry port (Supetar), but seems a world away (or at least a few centuries removed). With fewer than 1,000 inhabitants, there are restaurants and shops, but few visitors disturbing the crystal clear waters of the village's harbor or neighboring beaches. Founded at the same time as Split by one of the Roman Emperor Diocletian's followers, the village is ancient, and still has Venetian fortifications built to defend the town from marauders during Venice's many wars against Turks. Since its founding, peaceful Sutivan has attracted the wealthy, as evidenced by its baroque summer mansions and renaissance palaces, alongside typical white stone homes.

Brac's Traditional Tastes

Suggestion to explore on your own

If you're a foodie and a wine lover, you'll enjoy a visit to the shepherds' village of Gazul, with its stone houses and cattle pens. Abandoned in winter, stop by in the spring and summer and you'll be enchanted by the smells and tastes of delicious local dishes, especially island’s specialty, “vitalac,“ made from lamb entrails. Another gastronomic gem is the Kastel Gospodnetic family farm in the village of Skrip. The hosts are the 12th generation to live in a noble Venetian manor house with an Art Nouveau interior, granting you the opportunity to see how the upper class lived in the late-19th century Dalmatia. You can also taste homemade dishes in a renaissance tavern or on a baroque terrace overlooking the valley, sea, and mountains, enjoying tranquility, breezes, and roosters crowing. If you're interested in either, let us know, as reservations are a must.

Visit Peristil, the palace's main square, sit on its ancient stairs and just enjoy the remarkable view. Or take a seat at a cafe on the square to order a glass of local wine and take it easy. If you need to stretch your legs, head on a pleasant walk on West Coast and enjoy light sea breeze and amazing view of the main Riva promenade and the Palace. Suggestion to explore on your own

The entire city of Split is a museum in itself, but if you’d like to learn more about it and its surroundings, we have two excellent recommendations. The Archeological Museum has an incredible collection of interesting artifacts recovered during archeological digs in the region. Considering this region was settled thousands of years ago, there’s plenty here to marvel over. The Ethnographic Museum focuses on the cultural history of Split and the region, with incredible folk arts and crafts, costumes, tools, and more. It’s the best way to get a true insight into the history of the Croatian people.
