Highlights of Romania & Ukraine

15 Days / 14 Nights

Bucharest, Brasov, Gura Humorului, Chernivtsi, Lviv, Kyiv

Travel and LeisureFodorsUSA TodayNew York TimesNational GeographicWashington PostVogue
Many spectacular destinations await you on this unique Eastern European voyage of discovery. We've designed two weeks around the highlights of Romania and Ukraine, and the result is a perfectly balanced vacation, combining history with sightseeing, famous castles with UNESCO Heritage sites and everything is planned so you can travel between destinations without rushing things.

Besides the most inviting cities that you would guess, like Bucharest, Kyiv, or Lviv, you will visit off the beaten path Transylvania, Bucovina, and Chernivtsi. The Romanian capital, Bucharest, will amaze you with its shocking mix of architecture and fantastic nightlife. Brasov, the vivid Saxon town in Transylvania with a great vibe and wines, is a travel back in time. In Bucovina, you will explore the rural and folk heritage of the region. Like an evolution, you will approach your final destination by visiting enchanting Chernivtsi first, home of a grand, historical university complex and multicultural history. Lviv, the heart of Ukrainian culture, is your next destination where you can delve into artistic and culinary delights, walking its cobble-stoned streets, which fortunately survived the devastating bombarding in WWII. Finally you will arrive in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, the multifaceted metropolis, which is the last destination of your Eastern European journey. Along the way the transfers between destinations are colored with exciting sites en route to complete the impression that you are on a highlight tour.

In addition to the tours included we can arrange a number of excursions based on your own interests. All of our tours are custom, and this is just a sample meant to give an idea of what our trips are like, and the opportunities our destinations provide.

One of our team members in the region will be available to you during and leading up to the trip to answer any questions and arrange additional local services. You will receive access to your Guest Page, with its information on the best these destinations have to offer, including things to see and do, and other inside tips from restaurant recommendations to tipping advice. Upon your arrival, we will provide you with a local SIM that you can use to reach your local JayWay contact throughout your trip. In all of our destinations, we offer a variety of memorable 3-5 star accommodation options, including boutique hotels, charming B&Bs, and spacious apartments. With our first-hand experience, we can ensure they are all clean, comfortable, and centrally located, with local ambience.

The capital of Romania, Bucharest is a truly intriguing city where modern sophistication meets a rich and varied history. The business center of the city definitely has a cosmopolitan feel, but farther afield Bucharest still feels a little rough around the edges. The restored Old Town with its resplendent buildings is simply magnificent, as is Nicolae Ceausescu’s Palace of Parliament. One of the world's largest buildings (and with all its marble, certainly the heaviest), we highly recommend a tour of its gilded interior. This "Paris of the East" also has some amazing cafes and delicious restaurants, especially near Lipscani Street. The city is no stranger to culture either, with numerous galleries, antique shops and concert halls. The most stunning landmarks are along Calea Victoriei, but you can see something impressive on just about every corner. After discovering the incredible variety of neighborhoods and architectural styles in the city, you might want to enjoy one of its cultural festivals, or take off for a unique day trip. If you’re ready for a full day, a trip to Transylvania including Peles Castle and Dracula’s Castle, will certainly be a memorable excursion, and very Romanian. We can also arrange for a private guide to show you around the city and the notable surroundings.

Day 1

Day 1 - Arrival in Bucharest

After your flight arrives at Bucharest's Henri Coanda Airport, we will have someone meet you at the airport and bring you to your accommodations. The duration of the drive is about 30 minutes.

Our representative will then meet with you to answer any questions you have and to get you settled for the rest of your trip.

Dine and Drink on Your First Night

Suggestion to explore on your own

For your first night, it’s best to start with a short walk in the Old Town area to see a glimpse of how Bucharest looked and felt at its zenith, specifically during the 19th century when it was nicknamed the “Paris of the East”. Seek out a traditional dinner at one of the city’s historical Old Town restaurants: Manuc Inn, Hanul Berarilor or Caru cu Bere. Make sure you don’t miss the bean soup in a bread bowl, cabbage rolls, or pork stew. Save some room for dessert: the best option is Papanasi, a pastry shaped like a doughnut with a small sphere on top, filled with soft cheese, and covered in sour cream and sour jam. After dinner, you should definitely enjoy a glass of Romanian wine at one of the many rooftop bars located in the Old Town: Linea Closer to the Moon, Nomad SkyBar, or Pura Vida SkyBar. You’re in a Latin country, so get out there and enjoy the cheerful and happy vibe!

Suggestion to explore on your own

Every visit to Brasov should include a cable-car ride to Mt. Tampa, where superb views are just waiting to impress you. The walk is not difficult, but there are enough rocks underfoot along the way to warrant wearing comfortable shoes. Just next to the big letters, there’s a platform from where you can have the best panoramic view of the city. You’ll simply fall in love with Brasov.

Bucovina is becoming rightfully famous for its eight UNESCO-listed painted monasteries, although there are more which have yet to be listed. With walls covered inside and out with colorful Byzantine-inspired religious frescoes, these temples clearly come from another time. Bucovina itself is a quaint, quiet off-the-beaten-path region, with great opportunities for hiking and biking. Alongside the natural scenery, you'll love exploring the unique houses and medieval streets. There are also numerous local artisans there, some offering workshops where you can get hands-on with traditional crafts, such as making black pottery, or painting eggs. Several interesting day trips are also possible from Bucovina, so you'll have no shortage of activities. This is a wonderful place to escape from the hustle and bustle of Romania's larger cities to get back to nature and the country's traditions.

Kyiv is a modern city steeped in history, where high-end shops and colorful restaurants are surrounded with classical architecture. It is the source of Eastern Slavic culture and Kyiv still keeps a firm hold on history. The city’s famous buildings include Saint Sofia, a church that’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nestled in the hills, Kyiv feels spread out and can be a bit of a challenge to take in if you’re trying do so on foot but an excellent public transport system and very inexpensive taxis make getting around a breeze. There’s no shortage of unique things to do here, like touring the grounds of the opulent villa of former President Victor Yanukovych, complete with a huge collection of cars and private zoo. Another must-see, the Monastery of the Caves or Pechersk Lavra, is unlike anyplace else. This UNESCO World Heritage Site consists of a large complex of churches and chapels but most striking is a series of underground caves where you can see mummified monks from the 11th century. It’s just one more thing that makes Kyiv special.

The infamous disaster at Chernobyl had a profound effect on Europe, and continues to be felt, in terms of nuclear policy, and in the Zone of Alienation, the area surrounding Chernobyl where few people are allowed to live and work. A trip to Chernobyl might sound risky, but the typical exposure of a one-day tour is equivalent to a one-hour flight, 1/160th as much as a chest x-ray and 1/3600th as much as a whole body CT scan. Three of Chernobyl's reactors were kept running until 2000, and the power plant remains a worksite. A visit to Chernobyl is sobering, but memorable.

Authentic Shopping

Suggestion to explore on your own

Kyiv is known to be quite cheap when it comes to shopping. If you are a person who likes to bring home some fashion, we can definitely recommend visiting "Vsi Svoi" on Khreshchatyk 27, which only offers Ukrainian garments. Traditional Ukrainian clothing has caught on since the Maidan Revolution, and the sight of men and women alike wearing traditional white outfits featuring vivid, complex red embroidery has become quite common. If you prefer more boutique shopping and luxury, or are simply seeking some souvenirs such as paintings, be sure to head to Andriivsky Descent, which happens to be one of the most scenic parts of the city.
