Top vacation destinations in Transylvania

There's more to Transylvania than Dracula.
Dracula might be Transylvania's most famous son, but there's a lot more to the region than a fictional vampire. Coming from Bucharest you can reach the region (Latin for "Across the Woods") by a memorable drive, up the astounding Transfagarasan Highway (one of Europe's highest roads), or through the deep Prahova Valley, home to Peles Castle. If you visit just one Romanian castle, make it royal Peles. Once there take your pick of bases for exploration.
The atmospheric citadel town of Sighisoara, birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, is packed with history but you might find bustling Brasov more to your liking. Sibiu's expansive old town is a joy to wander and provides plenty to do. Cluj-Napoca, usually shortened to just Cluj, is Romania's second largest city, but its quirky culture and many students help it avoid the usual big-city feeling. Wherever you go, you'll never be far from Europe's densest system of well-preserved medieval fortifications, from castles and citadels, to fortresses and fortified churches, many of them UNESCO-listed.
