Poland & Lithuania: Two Hidden Gems Waiting To Be Discovered
Against all odds, mass tourism hasn’t reached every corner of Europe. Poland and Lithuania are two fine examples of countries that remain authentic to their core, offering a glimpse into the real Europe.
Also known as The Land of Fields because of its rich agricultural heritage, Poland will amaze you with its stunning medieval architecture, breathtaking scenery, hearty dishes, and real-life vibes.
Further north-east in the Baltic states, Lithuania awaits to fascinate you with its historic castles, but also its open-mindedness and innovation. Let us curate the perfect Poland and Lithuania itinerary for you, and get ready for the travel experience of a lifetime.
Just want to hit the highlights?
A standout jewel of Central Europe, Poland is one of a handful of countries where the capital city doesn’t take center stage. The most popular city to visit in Poland is, without a doubt, Krakow.
Known for its rich Jewish heritage, this fairytale-like destination boasts the largest medieval square in Europe – the stunning Old Town Market Square, the imposing Wawel Castle that dominates Wawel Hill, and a beautiful historic center, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
A short drive from Krakow, yet another site on the UNESCO World Heritage list awaits, this time a remnant of Europe’s recent past. The Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp stands as a testament to one of the darkest moments in world history, but also as a constant reminder of the strength of the human spirit.
Less visited but equally remarkable, Poland’s capital, Warsaw, with its impressive Royal Castle and magnificent Royal Route, is a unique blend of old and new, a city to experience with all your senses. The bell tower of St. Anne’s Church is the perfect place for great views of Warsaw’s beautiful Old Town.
In Lithuania, Vilnius is the largest city and capital, an up-and-coming destination that combines rich history with an impressive art and local culture scene. Don’t miss the Vilnius Cathedral, the Jewish Quarter, the Gates of Dawn, and, of course, the Gediminas Tower, the ultimate symbol of Vilnius.
Or dig deeper?
But the journey continues. Our expertise in Poland and Lithuania goes beyond the most popular destinations these two countries have to offer.
Surrounded by endless stretches of spectacular countryside, the cities of Wroclaw and Poznan, and the smaller towns of Torun and Kazimierz Dolny are quintessentially Polish with their gorgeous medieval buildings and cobbled narrow streets.
Gdansk, situated on the Baltic Sea coast, tells of a Hanseatic heritage that shines through in the colorful facades of its merchants’ houses.
Sitting at the confluence of the two largest Lithuanian rivers, Kaunas is the country’s scientific and cultural hub, a city known for its street art and interwar architecture. In northern Lithuania, the Hill of Crosses is an impressive pilgrimage site not to be missed.
Klaipeda, on the Curonian Lagoon, is the ideal base to explore the UNESCO-listed Curonian Spit, a sandbar in the Baltic Sea that is home to traditional fishing communities.

Frequently Asked Questions about Travel to Poland & Lithuania
Most of our guests travel to Poland and Lithuania from the US by air, unless they are already traveling in a neighboring European country.
Starting in Warsaw or Vilnius makes sense, depending on your route. Buying an open-jaw ticket is usually only a little more than a standard return, and we’ll include any intra-European flights in your package. Our travel advisors will help you pick the best flights for your itinerary.
It very much depends on your priorities. If you want to visit the most famous places, Krakow, Warsaw, and Vilnius might be top of your list. If you want to see more, we can arrange a trip that includes lesser-known destinations in both countries, such as Gdansk, Wroclaw, Poznan, Kaunas, and beyond. We can build an itinerary around anything on your must-see list.
Absolutely! That’s the whole point of working with a custom tour operator like us. We’ll work with you to tailor the perfect trip for you, so you can be sure you have enough time to see what you want, without having to worry about any of the details like how do you get to the train station, or making reservations at a local restaurant. We take care of all of that!
Our tour packages are designed to make touring Poland and Lithuania effortless. From working with our travel advisors and expert trip planners to craft your ideal itinerary to the moment you get on the plane to return home, we will take care of everything. Your custom tour package will include accommodation, airport transfers, any kind of transportation between destinations, walking tours, day trips, and, most importantly, the support of our local expert staff in Europe. They’ll be in touch with you before your trip to finalize any details. Upon request, we can provide you with a local e-SIM so you can be in touch by phone, email, or instant message. It’s like having the best tour director but still traveling independently.
Our Poland and Lithuania packages start from around $275 per person per day. The largest element is often accommodation, but private full-day tours can increase the cost, too. All our sample itineraries have a Price Guide function to give you an idea of the tour cost for different levels of accommodation, the month of travel, and the number of travelers.
No. As our tours are completely tailor-made to your needs and preferences, you choose the dates and destinations you want to visit.
The best time of year to visit Poland is late spring to October. Summer can be warm in southern Polish cities such as Krakow, but overly hot days are rare. The Baltic Sea coast with its sandy beaches, especially the seaside town of Sopot close to Gdansk, is becoming increasingly popular in July and August for Poles and Northern Europeans who want a seaside vacation with more moderate temperatures. Summer is the best time to visit Lithuania to make the most of the warm weather, but the shoulder season months of May, June, and September in Lithuania are quite pleasant, too. That said, winter is also a brilliant time to visit Poland and Lithuania if you want to experience some of the coziest Christmas markets in Europe.
We can arrange rental cars for all or part of the trip, but bear in mind that dropping off a rental in another country incurs high one-way fees. Your JayWay trip planner can arrange separate rentals where needed, so you can avoid unnecessary expenses and have the freedom to get around by car when you need to. In the countryside of Poland and Lithuania, a car is useful. Should your trip be mostly city-based, though, trains, executive-class buses, and transfers in a private car will be a lot more convenient.
Among all the guided tours we offer in Poland and Lithuania, some of our most popular are culinary-based, with many food tours or cooking classes showcasing Lithuanian or Polish cuisine. Moreover, a private walking tour of the picturesque Old Town in the three major cities – Krakow, Warsaw, and Vilnius – is the best way to appreciate their riches. Of course, it’s impossible to overlook major sights, like the Auschwitz Concentration Camp, and the plenty of World War II and Soviet-themed tours and activities that are on offer in Poland and Lithuania. Joining private or small-group tours with knowledgeable tour guides can render an already great experience all the more rewarding.
Absolutely. Your Poland and Lithuania itinerary will be customized to your wishes. You don’t have to fill every day, and we encourage leaving some free time aside – even if it’s just a free afternoon – simply to appreciate the destinations you’re visiting. Enjoying a leisurely stroll around the picturesque streets of Krakow in the late afternoon, admiring Warsaw’s skyline from a rooftop bar, or exploring Lithuanian cuisine and the diverse culinary scene of Vilnius are among the best ways to get acquainted with the real Poland and Lithuania.
We don’t sell cruises in Poland and Lithuania. We believe you enjoy a far richer experience by spending as much time as possible on land, soaking up the culture, and enjoying the local cuisine while appreciating a more responsible type of travel. So many of the wonders of these two countries lie far from cruise ports that to try and visit on a cruise would short-change you on the delights you should be relishing.
This is mostly a question of how many places you want to see. Each time you move to another destination, you’ll spend half a day traveling. For this reason we recommend three nights in most destinations. Fewer destinations means less time and money spent moving between them, and more time soaking up the atmosphere and seeing the sights. There are train connections between Poland and Lithuania, but we wouldn’t recommend them as the shortest train ride between the two countries takes about ten hours.
The quickest way to travel between Poland and Lithuania is by air. Flights between major tourist destinations in both countries are quick – maximum two hours – and relatively cheap thanks to several low-cost airlines providing service. To simplify your planning, we can include these intra-European flights in your vacation package.
Although the Euro is indeed used in Lithuania, in Poland, the official currency is the Polish zloty instead. But fear not. Once booked, you’ll find info on exchange rates and using ATMs in your custom Guest Page.
You don’t have to worry about group sizes as all our itineraries in the region are private, custom tour packages. We like to call this semi-independent travel. We make all the travel arrangements, from airport transfers, comfortable accommodation, excursions, and transport between cities. Unlike an escorted tour, you aren’t paying to have a tour guide, driver, or tour director the whole time, just when needed, so our packages are more affordable, too. That said, although our Lithuania and Poland tours are private, within your tour, we can include some shared experiences where you can meet fellow travelers and like-minded people. Some included activities that focus on the cultural aspect, like food tours, wine tastings, and cooking classes, are more fun when you join a small group tour. City tours, on the other hand, are often better one-on-one, so you can ask your expert local guide questions even beyond the regular content of the walking tour.
Our travel experts have inspected all the best 3- to 5-star hotels across our destinations, with an emphasis on small, locally owned boutique properties in the city center as well as signature larger properties. During the planning process, we will give you a choice of hotels and available room options to choose from in a carefully selected range. If you’re celebrating a special occasion, let our trip planners know at the time of booking, and they’ll make sure you stay in a hotel room that will add to your unforgettable experience. You can choose your preferred room type or share with us any specific accommodations you have in mind, and we’ll take it from there.
To keep our tours affordable, you won’t have a tour manager with you the whole time. Instead, you will be looked after by a dedicated local representative for each country, who is available by phone, email, and messaging. You will meet a local expert tour guide for each of your excursions.
Not at all. Our approach is to get the basics set first. To begin, we’ll set the dates and number of nights in each destination, your hotels, and how you’ll get between each city. In each destination, we recommend taking a guided tour with a local guide that will get you oriented and familiarize you with the city. Later, after this brief overview of the tour is ready, you can choose any optional excursion or tour according to your preferences.
Other than breakfast or meals that are part of an experience, like a food tour or cooking class, we don’t include meals, although for larger groups, we often arrange welcome or final night dinners, for example. Once you book, you will receive access to your Guest Page, which is packed with our curated recommendations for local restaurants you can enjoy during your custom trip.
