Valentina’s Athens

Published , by

As an Italian who chose to make Athens my home, I have to say that after 20 years, I’m still in love with this city. There’s something special about its energy, its people, the sense of freedom, and the everyday beauty hidden in its streets.

From the lively markets to the quiet, sunlit corners of its old neighborhoods, there’s always something new to appreciate. Not to mention the everlasting charm of a landmark like the Acropolis, which, from the height of its sacred hill, still acts like a lighthouse over the city.

I’m happy to share some of my favorite places and experiences that make Athens such a unique and wonderful place to visit.

Top 5 Things To See & Do in Athens

1. Filopappou Hill at Sunset

For a stunning view of the city and the Acropolis bathed in the golden light of sunset, Filopappou Hill is unbeatable. It’s a peaceful spot, perfect for unwinding while taking in Athens’ beauty.

2. Neoclassical Buildings of The National Library, University & Academy

These iconic landmarks showcase the grandeur of Athens’ neoclassical architecture. Stroll along Panepistimiou Street and admire the beauty of these architectural masterpieces.

3. A Stroll Around The Center on an Early Sunday Morning

When the city is still asleep, Athens feels almost magical. The quiet streets and the morning light on the ancient buildings make for a perfect walk to start the day.

4. Museum of Ancient Greek Technology

A fascinating stop for anyone interested in the technological wonders of Ancient Greece. It’s a hands-on experience that brings the past to life with interactive displays and unique artifacts.

5. Traditional Athens Cafés

Nothing captures the spirit of Athens like spending time in a traditional café. Sip a strong Greek coffee, watch the world go by, and enjoy the relaxed pace of life that makes the city feel like home.

Local Food & Drink

Greece is the cradle of Mediterranean cuisine, where the freshest vegetables, a lot of olive oil, fresh meat, and seafood take center stage. The Greek capital offers a diverse range of both traditional and more exotic flavors.

If you want to truly experience local life and food, just a few steps away from the touristy areas, you’ll find Exarchia. This neighborhood, known for its unique character, also offers a food scene that’s just as distinct. In Exarchia, locals gather for delicious, authentic dishes that you won’t find anywhere else.

One of my top favorites is Efimeron, where you can enjoy recipes passed down from Smyrna’s grandmothers. The chef, a renowned artist, brings art and tradition to the table, and every evening, they host live rebetika music to make the experience even more memorable. Heads up: no cards accepted.

Another must-try is Oxo Nou, a Cretan restaurant offering the bold and special flavors of Crete. This place is perfect for those who want to dive deeper into Greek regional cuisine. The snails are a must-try, as is the marathopita, a delicious fennel pie that brings a true taste of Cretan tradition.

For a more refined experience, Yiantes offers a modern twist on traditional Greek dishes in an unforgettable setting.

Located in the yard of an old Athenian house, the restaurant’s charm comes from its intimate, open-air atmosphere. Surrounded by greenery and rustic stone walls, it feels like stepping into a hidden oasis in the heart of the city.

Unique Cultural Experiences in Athens

Athens has a bustling cultural scene, offering something for every taste; from ancient history and classical art to contemporary exhibitions and underground performances.

The Benaki Museum is a perfect example, taking visitors through Greek history with its impressive permanent collection, from antiquity to modern times.

Its temporary exhibitions are always worth checking out, showcasing everything from photography to cutting-edge art. And the best part? Every Thursday evening, entry to the permanent collection is free, making it the perfect excuse for a mid-week cultural fix.

Beyond museums, the city pulses with live music, art galleries, and theatres. From intimate rebetika performances in tucked-away tavernas to world-class concerts at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, there’s always something happening.

Contemporary art lovers can explore galleries and the vibrant street art scene, while those into experimental performances will find plenty to discover in the city’s independent theaters and cultural spaces.

To keep up with the latest events, Athinorama is the go-to guide, covering everything from concerts and exhibitions to the best new restaurants and bars.

Best Relaxation Spots in Athens

Athens isn’t just about history and culture, it also has plenty of places to unwind. The National Garden, right in the heart of the city, offers a peaceful escape with shaded paths, hidden ponds, and lush greenery.

For a different kind of relaxation, a visit to Polis Hammam downtown is a must. Stepping into the warm, steamy atmosphere is the perfect way to recharge after a long day of exploring.

Shopping in Athens

From big-name brands to hidden local gems, Athens has something for every shopper. Ermou Street is the city’s main shopping avenue, lined with popular international and Greek stores.

But for a more authentic experience, head to Evripidou Street, where the air is filled with the aroma of spices, teas, and specialty products like pastourma. If you’re into antiques and quirky finds, the Monastiraki Flea Market and Avissinias Square are must-visit.

Nightlife & Bars

Athens has a vibrant nightlife scene, with something for every mood; from cozy wine bars to buzzing late-night spots. For a relaxed evening, Warehouse in Exarchia is a great choice, offering an excellent selection of wines and cocktails in a laid-back atmosphere.

If you’re into artsy, hidden gems, TAF (The Art Foundation) in Monastiraki is a must-visit, tucked inside a charming courtyard where you can enjoy drinks surrounded by contemporary art.

Seasonal Highlights

Athens transforms with the seasons. In winter, bars and cafés take on a cozy, homey feel, offering everything from live music to art events.

Come spring and summer, the city moves outdoors; rooftop bars, open-air cinemas, and street festivals take over, while the Athens & Epidaurus Festival brings world-class performances to ancient theaters. No matter the season, there’s always something to experience.
