"Unexpected cuisine and nightlife in an architectural mecca." - The New York Times

Brno has been enjoying a renaissance as of late, supported by a university and the tech jobs it has attracted. Located between Prague and Vienna, near the Moravian wine region, Brno was a key part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and nicknamed "the Moravian Manchester" for its industrial significance. Its Hapsburg and interwar prosperity are made clear from its sumptuous architecture, including prime examples of functionalism, such as the UNESCO-listed Villa Tugendhat. The city offers plenty of variety, though, as shown by Spilberk Castle.

Route for Brno tour

Since 2017, Brno has been an official UNESCO "City of Music". This is evident from a rich cultural calendar in the city's many venues. Brno is also an excellent base for exploring Moravia. You'll find treats such as the wine region close to the border with Austria and the imposing castle at Vranov. The Moravian Karst has a cave system you can explore by underground river. Brno is worth a couple of nights on a longer trip. It's also a nice alternative to Vienna on the way between Prague and Budapest, if you've already toured Austria. Brno is a fantastic change of pace from the capitals. Indulge in the city's vibrant nightlife and check out the cafes, restaurants and bars.

What we love about Brno

Charlie

Marketing Director

Until I had friends in Brno, I thought the city was boring. Now I know it better, and have come to appreciate it much more. Sometimes the touristy side of Prague and Vienna can be overwhelming. Brno is a balm to those feelings. The city has eclectic architecture, a vibrant coffee, cocktail and food scene and hidden depths (literally - there's a lot of 'underground' in Brno). Brno is a welcome change of pace and a must for a 'slow travel' tour of the region.

I like the general vibe of the place. Brno is a student city, and you can feel the energy at every step. Everyone in Brno can find something they can try for the first time in their lives. Many theaters are based there, and host concerts, readings, debates, and events with unusual formats you may not have experienced before. Combine this with the number of fantastic cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants and you have the ideal place to spend a night or two.

Brno is the perfect place to spend the weekend, to avoid crowds in big cities. Brno is full of awesome bars and restaurants where you can sample the best local beers and authentic Czech food. Last year, I visited this charming town for a beer weekend with friends, and we had the most amazing time. Brno is definitely a worthwhile stop when you're traveling to Prague or Vienna.
