The Czech Republic's second city, Brno, has had a reputation for being dull. In fact, most Praguers think it's boring (a Czech movie called Boredom in Brno was released a few years back). But many simply haven't been to Brno to see for themselves how it has changed over the past few years. Brno is a university town. This is part of the reason for its renaissance, with tech companies moving in and providing well-paying jobs. Historically, Brno was an important town in the Austro-Hungarian empire. Locals called it "the Moravian Manchester" in reference to its industrial significance. Brno is located on the route between Prague and Vienna, close to the Moravian wine region. Its classical buildings attest to its significance during the Habsburg era. You'll also find outstanding examples of functionalist architecture. These include the UNESCO-listed Villa Tugendhat. You can find other buildings in the style in various parts of the city too. Spilberk Castle is another must-see.
Since 2017 Brno is a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities network as a 'city of music'. This is evident from a rich cultural calendar in the city's many venues. Brno is also an excellent base for exploring Moravia. You'll find treats such as the wine region close to the border with Austria and the imposing castle at Vranov. The Moravian Karst has a cave system you can explore by underground river. Brno is worth a couple of nights on a longer trip. It's also a nice alternative to Vienna on the way between Prague and Budapest , if you've already toured Austria. Brno is a fantastic change of pace from the capitals. Indulge in the city's vibrant nightlife and check out the cafes, restaurants and bars. They're a huge hit with the locals and the New York Times, who listed Brno as one of their 52 Places to Go in 2016.

What I love about Brno...
“Until I had friends in Brno I thought the city was boring. Now I know it better and have come to appreciate it much more. Sometimes the touristy side of Prague and Vienna can be overwhelming. Brno is a balm to those feelings. The city has eclectic architecture, a vibrant coffee, cocktail and food scene and hidden depths (literally - there's a lot of 'underground' in Brno). A welcome change of pace and a must for a 'slow travel' tour of the region.”
