The Daughter of the Baltics. Remodeled by Russian tsars along the lines of Saint Petersburg, Helsinki manages to combine its role as an international metropolis with small-town charm.

Helsinki Sights

How does Helsinki do it? Old-time port charm combined with a modern vibe. The Swedes established it as a strategic trading port in the 18th century. Helsinki's eclectic mix of styles offers a rare treat for architecture buffs. The buildings combine Nordic Minimalism, Byzantine-Russian, Austrian-influenced Art Nouveau, Neoclassical and Modernist styles.

Helsinki Tourism

The churches in Helsinki are high on the must-see list. You should visit the Lutheran and Russian Orthodox Cathedrals. There's also the 1960s-built Rock Church, blasted from solid rock. And don't miss the impressive Senate Square. Other hits in the center of Helsinki include the classy Esplanade shopping streets and park. Then there's the Sibelius monument and the lively South Harbor market. Save time for a visit to the UNESCO-listed maritime fortress island of Suomenlinna. It's just a 15-minute boat ride from Helsinki's South Harbor. You'll experience a tranquility in sharp contrast to the bustling city. Helsinki's direct flights to North America make it an ideal place to start or finish a tour of the Baltics.

Where to stay in Helsinki

As you'd expect from a design-forward modern European capital, there's a good choice of boutique and design hotels in Helsinki but if you're looking for something on the quirky side, might we suggest a night in the slammer? A former prison in the Katajanokka district has been converted into a hotel. Conditions are somewhat improved for current guests. Once we start preparing your customized itinerary we will present our recommended options for you to select from.

Things to do in Helsinki

Helsinki might be a relatively modern city but it has plenty of sights to see, and quite spread out. Our favorite way to see these is on a Sustainable City Tour which will take you around all the highlights. Combine it with a boat tour to see another side of the city too. One place that's well worth visiting on your own is the UNESCO-listed fortress island, Suomenlinna, a 15 minute ferry ride from Helsinki's market square. When we send you your customized itinerary you will be able to choose additional excursions to included in your vacation package or consider for adding later.

Travel Advisor

What I love about Helsinki...

“The views from the ferry to Tallinn alone make Helsinki worth a visit. This city has many architectural curiosities, from its rival Lutheran and Russian Orthodox cathedrals (sitting atop a hill and a rock), which face each other, to art nouveau and modernist structures, such as a church built into bedrock, and another that resembles a skyscraper, a concert hall by Alvar Aalto, and the grounds of the 1952 Summer Olympics. The fortified archipelago of Suomenlinna, once known as the "Gibraltar of the North" is worth the short ferry ride, as these islands, which once guarded the harbor and are the reason the city exists, provide impressive views of the coast, amidst 18th century fortifications.”
