Tallinn

Estonia
Tallinn travel packages

Where Scandinavia meets Russia. Just 50 miles from Helsinki, Tallinn is a unique mix of East and West, Nordic and East European.

Wandering through Tallinn's medieval Old Town, you might feel like you've lost a century. The oldest capital city in Northern Europe, Tallinn never fails to amaze visitors with its cobblestone streets, church spires, and beguiling vibrancy. But don't think there's nothing new or modern to see in Tallinn. Two decades ago, Estonia regained independence following the 1988 Singing Revolution. Since then the city has modernized without losing its historical charm. Located just 50 miles and two hours by ferry from Helsinki, Tallinn, like all of Estonia, is a unique mix of East and West. You'll see this effect in Tallinn's art, architecture and even the hearty and delicious local cuisine.

The city's UNESCO World Heritage listed medieval walls contrast perfectly with the Old Town's chic boutiques, courtyard cafes, art-deco patisseries, and elegant bistros. The pleasant summer climate and long days encourage strolls and lingering cafe visits. And did we mention the beach? Tallinn has a two-kilometer sand beach bordering its bay. Be sure to explore outside Tallinn's city walls too. There is a peaceful park along the ramparts. Going past the railway station will put you in the Bohemian Kalamaja neighborhood. Need a reminder of this century? Tallinn is widely recognized as one of the world's most tech-orientated cities, and has the skyscrapers to match.

What I love about Tallinn

I moved to Estonia in part because I fell in love with the old city, one of the largest and best preserved in Europe, but take the time to wander beyond the medieval towers (one of which was once the tallest building in the world), and explore the creativity in the hip Kalamaja district, walk down the Culture Kilometer to the award-winning Seaplane Museum, spot the president in her garden at the Kadriorg Palace or walking along the neighboring bay, and get to know a country that is both one of the most high-tech in the world, but has many flea markets and ruins reminiscent of the Soviet occupation.

Where to stay in Tallinn

Tallinn's medieval Old Town is where you'll find all the accommodation options we offer, from apartments and three star hotels to five star historic boutique properties that will have you posting your room's decor online. Once we start preparing your customized itinerary we will present our recommended options for you to select from.
Luxury Hotel
No expenses spared on the furnishings or amenities here. The elegant, classic design is a winner, and the restaurant is one of the best in town
Boutique Hotel
A little romance in Tallinn? This is a great choice thanks to the elegance of the space and the luxurious touches throughout. No elevator
Classic Hotel
Centrally located, well-priced hotel. Very close to all the sights and restaurants and bars.

Things to do in Tallinn

With its rich history and an enviable location on the Baltic coast there's plenty to see in and around Tallinn. At a minimum we recommend taking a walking tour of the Old Town to both get your bearings and learn of the city's past, but 20th century history buffs will want to learn more about the Soviet era and our Communist Tallinn private tour gives you the chance to do just that. Nature lovers should head for Laheema National Park, a nature reserve with its long coast, villages, and surreal bogs traversed by boardwalks and with snow-shoe-like attachments. When we send you your customized itinerary you will be able to choose additional excursions to include in your vacation package or consider for adding later.

JayWay Travel is a great alternative for the older seasoned traveler, who wants assistance in transfers and a personal introduction to each city but doesn't want to be herded around.
