Wandering through Tallinn's medieval Old Town, you might feel like you've lost a century. The oldest capital city in Northern Europe, Tallinn never fails to amaze visitors with its cobblestone streets, church spires and beguiling vibrancy. But don't think there's nothing new or modern to see in Tallinn. Two decades ago Estonia regained independence following the 1988 Singing Revolution. Since then the city has modernized without losing its historical charm. Located just 50 miles and 2 hours by ferry from Helsinki, Tallinn, like all of Estonia, is a unique mix of East and West. You'll see this effect in Tallinn's art, architecture and even Estonian cuisine. It's hearty and delicious.
The city's UNESCO World Heritage Listed medieval walls contrast perfectly with the Old Town's chic boutiques, courtyard cafes, art-deco patisseries and elegant bistros. The pleasant summer climate and long days encourage strolls and lingering cafe visits. And did we mention the beach? Tallinn has a two-kilometer sand beach bordering its bay.
Be sure to explore outside Tallinn's city walls too. There is a peaceful park along the ramparts. Going past the railway station will put you in the Bohemian Kalamaja neighborhood. Need a reminder of this century? Tallinn is widely recognized as one of the world's most tech-orientated cities. It has a modern business district that reflects this.

Things to do in Tallinn
With a rich history and an enviable location on the Baltic coast there's plenty to see in and around Tallinn. At a minimum we recommend taking a walking tour of the Old Town to both get your bearings and learn of the city's past, but 20th century history buffs will want to learn more about the Soviet era and our Communist Tallinn private tour gives you the chance to do just that. Nature lovers should head for Laheema National Park, a nature reserve consisting mostly of bogs that you go walking on with snow-shoe-like attachments. When we send you your customized itinerary you will be able to choose additional excursions to included in your vacation package or consider for adding later.
What I love about Tallinn...
“I moved to Estonia in part because I fell in love with the old city, one of the largest and best preserved in Europe, but take the time to wander beyond the medieval towers (one of which was once the tallest building in the world), and explore the creativity in the hip Kalamaja district, walk down the Culture Kilometer to the award-winning Seaplane Museum, spot the president in her garden at the Kadriorg Palace or walking along the neighboring bay, and get to know a country that is both one of the most high-tech in the world, but has many flea markets and ruins reminiscent of the Soviet occupation.”
