Ollantaytambo is one of the most atmospheric destinations in the Sacred Valley, a small town where Inca history isn’t just preserved, but still very much lived. Its narrow streets, stone channels, and original urban layout date back more than 500 years, and this is why it's considered one of the best surviving examples of an Inca settlement. It's no overstatement to say that walking around Ollantaytambo feels like stepping into a living archaeological site.

The town is overlooked by the impressive Ollantaytambo Fortress, a dramatic hillside complex of terraces, temples, and viewpoints. It’s one of the Sacred Valley’s most important ruins and offers spectacular panoramas of the valley and surrounding peaks. The town's central square and pedestrian lanes around it are filled with small cafés, craft shops, and local eateries, giving Ollantaytambo an unpretentious and charming ambiance. Ollantaytambo is also the departure point for the train to Machu Picchu, which makes it a very convenient base for travelers heading to the famous citadel.
