A cornucopia of architectural marvels, cultural wealth, and gastronomic pleasures
A city with a history that spans more than five millennia, Evora is a sight to behold with its diverse architecture that reflects several phases of its past, as it turned from a Roman to a Moorish to a Christian settlement. It was this melange of cultures that earned Evora Old Town its UNESCO World Heritage status in 1986. Nowadays, Evora is one of the most pleasant destinations to visit in Portugal, with several monuments to admire and mouthwatering local dishes to try, but most of all, a city that conveys an irresistible small-town feeling in the best possible way.
Route for Evora tour
One of the most striking buildings in Evora is the Roman Temple of Diana. Constructed 2000 years ago, this is one of the best-preserved Roman remnants in the entire Iberian Peninsula. Another famous landmark in Evora is the city's fortress-like Cathedral that blends several architectural styles. A special mention should be made to the Chapel of Bones. As its name suggests, the chapel is decorated with human bones and skulls. Apart from sightseeing in Evora, walking through its charming streets and savoring delicacies from the Portuguese region of Alentejo as you go is enough to make you fall in love with this gem of a city in the heart of Portugal.
