Know Before You Go: Language Basics

Whenever you travel to a non-English-speaking country, it’s natural to feel like a bit of a fish out of water. It’s getting a lot easier to get by without speaking the local language as English levels seem to be on the rise everywhere, but it’s always worth learning a few words and phrases to help break the ice.

When our city hosts meet our guests at the start of the tour they often spend a few minutes helping them practice saying a few words in the local language. Picking up pronunciation from written text is hard! If you’d like to take your language learning a bit further than these basics, then we recommend either the app Duolingo, which gamifies the process, or iTalki, a platform where you can hire a private tutor for one-on-one lessons over video chat.
