Before we dig in
Top Tens are odd things, whether you trust in the wisdom of the crowds (as well as TripAdvisor’s algorithms) to give you an accurate picture of a city’s best places or you seek out a curated list like this. The purpose of this list is to tell you about the places we go, that we take our friends and family to and that we recommend to our hundreds of guests who visit Prague every year. These aren’t the ten best fine-dining restaurants in the city, instead it is a cross-section of styles, price levels and locations. You can’t have a 7 course tasting menu with wine pairings every night, sometimes you just want a burger. Oh and in fact there are 12 – some categories were too close to call!
Best for Fine Dining
A fairly money-no-object kind of place but with the weak crown, surprisingly reasonable by international standards. It’s a mystery to us why Kampa Park is continuously overlooked by the Michelin inspectors when its combination of gorgeous food, great views from the several terraces and great service including a top class sommelier would seem a slam dunk. Order a la carte or take a tasting menu with wine pairings, which would be our recommendation.
Best for Czech food and Pilsner
There are quite a few Lokals now, including one on Dlouha, close to Old Town Square but the nicest of them by far is Lokal U Bile Kuzelky, in Mala Strana just to the side of Charles Bridge. Head straight down to the cellar area (non-smoking) for an atmospheric experience – booking is advised though. The Pilsner Urquell here is perfectly kept and poured, delivered unpasteurized direct from the brewery every few days and stored in a tank. The menu is full of Czech classics all done slow-food style. True to its name, you’ll find it’s also popular with locals. Great value for money so a good way to offset a big spending night at Kampa Park!
Best for views of Charles Bridge
We’ve already tipped its sister restaurant Kampa Park but the more affordable Bricks deserves a mention too. A little less fine dining but still superb food. In summer the terrace’s views of Charles Bridge – just a little further away from it than KP, are postcard perfect. Another place where it’s worth taking the tasting menu – the wine pairings are a must with this.
Best for parties and larger groups
If you’re a group of more than 6, eating out can be a bit fraught, there’s always the issue of coordinating what to order, hoping everything arrives at the same time, then splitting the bill at the end can get messy. For a fun atmosphere and never a problem with the timings of courses, we head to Brasileiro, a churrasco restaurant in the cellar of Slovansky Dum. The choice is simple: salad bar only or salad bar and grilled meat & fish. The salad bar is pretty well stocked, the meat and fish of excellent quality (it helps if you like your beef on the rare side) and drink prices are reasonable too. Splitting the bill at the end is a lot less trouble too.
Best for views of the castle and on a budget too!
The food is average-to-good at this floating Italian restaurant but the big star at Marina is the view you’ll have of Prague castle. There aren’t a lot of places with this kind of view and certainly not at such reasonable prices (Cotto Crudo at the Four Seasons or Bellevue spring to mind) so Grossetto Marina’s river-facing tables are worth reserving (in warm weather the top deck is open too).
Best for Pizza
Yes, we know you didn’t come to Prague for pizza but Pepe Nero is an exceptional Neapolitan style pizza joint (no deep dish here!) High quality toppings and expert pizzaiolos, slinging the pies into a combination wood/electric oven that cooks your pizza in 3 minutes, all overseen by a fastidious Italian owner make this Prague’s best pizza place by a mile. Get any pizza with mozzarella di buffala for maximum enjoyment. Reasonably priced house wines are the best deal on the drinks list.
Best for Burgers
Prague’s Best Burger is a close-run contest and picking our favorite wasn’t easy. For ‘traditional’ beef burgers, Dish Fine Burger Bistro just edged it for us and the mouthwatering photos of their burgers look just the same in real life. It’s not a large place so booking is recommended and you’ll have to venture out of the center for this one, as it’s in the Prague 2/Vinohrady neighborhood, close to Namesti Miru.
Best for Steak
Sticking with American cuisine, George Prime Steakhouse, helmed by Slovak-born chef George Betak who has years of steak experience in the US and located in the Emblem Hotel is a cut above the rest when it comes to grilled perfection. Importing their meat directly from Arkansas, then dry-ageing it in-house, they take their ingredients very seriously. Their 8oz fillet is one of the most expensive steaks in Prague but believe us, it’s worth every penny. Just don’t ask for it well done.
Best for Sunday Brunch
If your stay in Prague includes a Sunday and you really don’t have anything better to do with the day than eat, drink and be merry, then several of the city’s five star hotels offer an unlimited (food and drink) brunch. If you prefer a little more moderation, with a close-up of Charles Bridge thrown in, then Mlynec is our top pick for plated brunch, offered Saturday and Sunday.
Best for Breakfast
[Updated Jan 2020] Since our favorite place for an Eggs Benedict changed format and stopped doing breakfast, we’ve been forced to look elsewhere. In our opinion it doesn’t get better than the Instagram-friendly eggs Benedict soufflé at Kavarna Co Hleda Jmeno over in the Andel part of the city on the left bank of the river, just south of the center. Their espresso drinks and lemonades are the perfect accompaniment.

Thanks for the overview. Although I try to avoid any restaurants with a French name or style –for a long list of personal reasons–you have convinced me to try La Gare. I am a sucker for Eggs Benedict.
Thanks Michael. It’s one of the best Eggs Benedict I’ve ever had. And it’s not just for breakfast – you can order it any time there!
