The Gateway to Transylvania.
Brasov is one of Romania's most popular cities.
Anyone traveling in Europe will find a friendly welcome in Brasov. There you'll see amazing Romanian architecture, historic attractions, and more. Hotels are affordable, and there's always a wealth of things to do in and around Brasov. The imposing Carpathian Mountains encompass Brasov's medieval beauty. Council Square is ringed with baroque buildings and the Black Church is Romania’s largest gothic church. Squeeze down Rope Street, the narrowest street in Europe, then broaden your outlook with a cable car ride from the city center to the scenic peak of Mount Tampa. And you can still discover parts of Brasov's 14th century fort. Basing yourself in Brasov for a few days gives you time to soak up the atmosphere. It also provides access to three of Romania's best castles: Bran, Rasnov, and Peles, which represent different periods.
Route for Brasov tour
If you do spend a few days in Brasov, try to catch a performance from the local opera or philharmonic. Festivals in Brasov take place all year. There's a Brasov beer festival in September and a jazz festival in November. In summer you can enjoy outdoor dining along Council Square. That's where you'll find some of Brasov's best restaurants. Beyond Mount Tampa, Brasov is a great base for hiking up mountains and through valleys to waterfalls and panoramic summits. Some people think visiting Romania isn’t worth it if you don’t visit Brasov, and we tend to agree.

What I love about Brasov

Olivia

Trip Planner

As a child, Brasov used to be my favorite city. I was always fascinated by this medieval town resting literally at the foothills of a small mountain. I love that from the main square it’s just a few minutes’ walk to the cable car and in almost no time you’re atop Mount Tampa, admiring the whole city from above. The view is breathtaking, no matter how many times I’ve seen it. Another cool thing is Poiana Brasov, a ski resort accessible by bus in less than 30 minutes. Brasov is all about the setting, the fresh air, tiny medieval cobblestone streets, and easy access to famous surrounding sites like Bran & Rasnov castles or Piatra Craiului mountain villages.

Things to do in Brasov

Brasov is ideally located to explore the surrounding area, where you will find some of the region's most famous (and notorious!) castles. Don't miss out on a cable car ride to get a panoramic view of the town. There's a funicular too, for an alternate view and perhaps more suitable for those who are afraid of heights! There are plenty of day trip possibilities in the area, children in particular love visiting the nearby bear sanctuary. When we send you your customized itinerary you will be able to choose additional excursions to include in your vacation package or consider adding later.

Frequently Asked Questions about travel to Brasov

How long should I stay in Brasov?

We recommend spending 2-3 days in Brasov. On your first day, you can visit the Old Town of Brasov, then the famous Bran Castle, also known as Dracula’s Castle. Brasov is conveniently located at the gateway of Transylvania and it’s surrounded by the beautiful Carpathian Mountains. This makes it a great starting point for exploring the mountains and the surrounding villages. Therefore, from Brasov you can go on a hike and explore the Seven Stairs Canyon, admire the amazing views from the villages of Magura and Pestera, or visit the rescued bears at Zarnesti's Bear Sanctuary.

What are Brasov's must-see sights?

Council Square (the main square), The Black Church (Transylvania's largest Gothic cathedral), Brasov's defensive fortifications, the Street (perhaps Europe's narrowest street), and Mt. Tampa, where the giant sign reminiscent of Hollywood can be reached via cable car, or an hour's hike.

How can I get around Brasov?

Most of Brasov's attractions are within walking distance of each other, in the city center. However, you can get around via the city's buses and trolleybuses, although Uber and Brasov's affordable taxis are also options.
