Klaipeda Sights

Situated at the mouth of the Dane River and also close to the Nemunas River, Klaipeda has long been an important port city on the Baltic Sea. Klaipeda's varied mix of architectural styles tells part of its history. Teutonic Knights founded Klaipeda. Back then its name was Memelburg, then just Memel when it was part of Prussia and later the German Empire. Klaipeda has been called Klaipeda (literally "flat ground" in an ancient local dialect, after the marshy land it was built on) since the 15th century. But it has only had that name officially since it joined Lithuania in 1945.

Klaipeda Tourism

Klaipeda's Old Town is a pleasant place for a few hours wandering and admiring the half-timbered Germanic architecture. Klaipeda is a popular stop for Baltic Sea cruises, too. The cruise port, not far from Old Town, is home to plenty of diversions. There's a ferris wheel and bars popular with the town's younger inhabitants. The left bank of the calm Dane river has restaurants and cafes. Don't miss the fish restaurant in the reconstructed ship, Meridianas. This is the hometown of the Svyturys brewery too, making it the best place to try one. Klaipeda is also ideal as a base for visiting the Curonian Spit. You can go on a private or group tour, or on your own. There are ferries across the short gap at the northern end of the Spit. There's also a regular boat service direct from Klaipeda to Nida.

Where to stay in Klaipeda

Klaipeda's compact city center has several hotels but from our experience these are the best in their respective price categories. Once we start preparing your customized itinerary we will present our recommended options for you to select from.

Things to do in Klaipeda

The old town area of Klaipeda, with its half-timbered buildings, can be explored comprehensively in a couple of hours but the big attraction and the main reason for visiting Klaipeda has to be the Curonian Spit, the 60 mile sand dune that separates the Curonian lagoon from the Baltic Sea. A day trip here with your own private driver is the best way to explore. Start by crossing via the short ferry service then driving along the Spit, stopping at the dunes, looking for amber along the shore, checking out the carved statues at the hill of witches, then breaking for lunch in the picturesque fishing village of Nida. After lunch venture within a few hundred yards of the border of Kaliningrad, a tiny Russian enclave on the Baltic coast before returning to Klaipeda.

What I love about Klaipeda...

“I'm quite fond of the beach at the northern edge of Klaipeda, from its breakwater with views of ships entering the harbor, to the pine forest running alongside a shore hosting the occasional bunker, but the city's biggest draw is the Curonian Spit, just across the lagoon. Essentially one long sand dune running for 100km, the town near the Russian border, Nida, has been drawing German tourists for centuries. People still flock to see the German artist's colony (once home to Thomas Mann), take in the cute painted wooden homes and sculptures, climb Europe's largest sand dune, and hunt for amber (I found 13 pieces on my first visit, while walking along the beach near the Russian border).”
