Klaipeda

Travel and LeisureFodorsUSA TodayNew York TimesNational GeographicWashington PostVogue

Lithuania's favorite port. Klaipeda's eclectic architectural mix brings a curious charm.

Situated at the mouth of the Dane River, close to the Nemunas River, Klaipeda has long been an important port city on the Baltic Sea. Klaipeda's varied mix of architectural styles tells part of its history. Teutonic Knights founded Klaipeda as Memelburg. The name was shortened to Memel when it was part of Prussia and later the German Empire, and as an autonomous "free city" protected by the League of Nations following World War I. Klaipeda has been called Klaipeda (literally "flat ground" in an ancient dialect) since the 15th century, but the name only became official after World War II.

Route for Klaipeda tour

Klaipeda's Old Town is a pleasant place for a few hours of wandering, while admiring half-timbered Germanic architecture. Klaipeda is a popular stop for Baltic Sea cruises, too. The cruise port, not far from Old Town, is home to plenty of diversions. There's a ferris wheel and bars popular with the town's younger inhabitants. The left bank of the calm Dane river has restaurants and cafes. Don't miss the fish restaurant in the reconstructed ship, Meridianas. This is the hometown of the Svyturys brewery too, making it the best place to try one. Klaipeda is also ideal as a base for visiting the Curonian Spit. You can go on a private or group tour, or on your own. There are ferries across the short gap at the northern end of the Spit. There's also a regular boat service direct from Klaipeda to Nida.

What I love about Klaipeda

Operations Executive

Klaipeda and Nida in the Curonian Spit are must-see destinations in the region. Actually I would even say these were my favorite places to visit in Lithuania. Klaipeda has a really nice vibe even if it is a fairly small town. We found great restaurants and craft beer places. I would recommend Klaipeda to all my friends to stay a few nights over the summer, go to the Curonian Spit, enjoy the seaside, the food, and relax.

Things to do in Klaipeda

The old town area of Klaipeda, with its half-timbered buildings, can be explored comprehensively in a couple of hours, but the big attraction and the main reason for visiting Klaipeda has to be the Curonian Spit, the 60 mile sand dune that separates the Curonian lagoon from the Baltic Sea. A day trip here with your own private driver is the best way to explore. Start by crossing via the short ferry service then driving along the Spit, stopping at the dunes, looking for amber along the shore, and checking out the carved statues at the hill of witches, then breaking for lunch in the picturesque fishing village of Nida. After lunch, venture within a few hundred yards of the border of Kaliningrad, the Russian enclave on the Baltic coast, before returning to Klaipeda.
