Nestled among the mountains and villages of Turkey’s southwest coast is Antalya, the city that serves as the anchor to this splendid stretch of seaside. With its skyline punctuated by prominent Taurus Mountain peaks seemingly rising out of the Gulf of Antalya and magenta bougainvillea bursting from vines, Antalya is dramatic in every way. It’s the largest city on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, with its shiny new city wrapping around the old town section called Kaleiçi. This walled neighborhood used to be the whole of Antalya, before the city expanded into its modern form. Kaleiçi, which means “inside the fortress,” has winding narrow cobblestone roads, charming Ottoman-era houses, and historic structures that span the many eras this city has seen.

Frequently Asked Questions about travel to Antalya

How long should I spend in Antalya?
Depending on how much you plan to see in the surrounding area, 3 or 4 days can be a good amount of time to stay in Antalya. If you have less time, you will be fine staying only two days. More days gives you greater opportunities to explore both the city itself and the ruins and historical sites in the area around Antalya.
Is Antalya safe?
Like most cities in Turkey, Antalya is very safe. While there is some petty crime as in any city, on the whole Antalya is safe and has a very low crime rate. Stay aware of your belongings as you would anywhere, but otherwise, you should feel at ease in the city.
How do I get around Antalya?
Antalya has a robust public transportation system, including buses and a tram line that takes you all the way to the Antalya Airport. Taxis are abundant and easy to hail in the city center. If you venture outside of Antalya, there are often minibuses that can take you to popular destinations. Otherwise, a taxi or a car would suffice.
When is the best time to visit Antalya?
The Mediterranean Coast is very hot in the summertime, though that can be ideal for visiting beaches. The most comfortable weather in Antalya comes in May-June and September, when it can still be hot without being overwhelming. Springtime (March-April) is also very pleasant, though it might not be warm enough to swim yet.
