Frequently Asked Questions about travel to United Kingdom

Do US citizens need a visa for the UK?

Contrary to what you might have heard, you don't need a visa, as there are no visa requirements in place, but you do need to register for the UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), at a cost of £16. This is the UK's equivalent of the US ESTA, which British citizens and citizens of many other countries are required to apply for when they visit the USA. Please only use the official (gov.uk) website to apply; there are lots of scammy sites that will charge you extra for processing the application. Once authorized, this lasts for 2 years or until your passport expires - whichever happens first. Authorization takes just a few hours, but you’re advised to apply at least three working days before departure.

What's the best way to get to the UK?

By plane is our usual answer. Yet, the UK is the only European country with regular transatlantic crossings by ship, the Queen Mary 2, a journey that takes seven nights. This is ideal if you have time to spare or a fear of flying. However, most of our guests choose to fly.

How long must my passport be valid?

Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your trip to the UK, and we strongly recommend having an extra 6 months of validity, especially if you’re planning to visit other European countries on the same trip, where your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your departure date from Europe.

What is the local currency in the UK?

The official currency of the United Kingdom is the Pound Sterling (£/GBP).

Can I use my credit cards everywhere in the UK?

Yes, the UK is highly cashless, and you can use your US credit card for almost 99% of your transactions.

Are there direct flights to the UK from the US?

With over 30 direct flights a day between the US and the UK, there's plenty of choice; you don't even have to start in London. If you do, you'll most likely be landing at Heathrow or, less likely, Gatwick airports.

When is the best time to visit the UK?

For an unforgettable experience, the best time to visit the UK is during the shoulder seasons of late spring (May to early June) and early fall (September). During these months, you can benefit from lovely, mild weather and long daylight hours without encountering the heavy crowds and excessive heat the summer months bring.

What are some iconic landmarks to visit in the UK?

You’ll be spoilt for choice in the UK, as there’s plenty of sightseeing. In London, world-renowned museums, like the British Museum, the National Gallery, Tate Modern, and the mind-blowing Churchill War Rooms, await, while there’s no end to the historical landmarks you can admire in the British capital. From Buckingham Palace (the official residence of the royal family), Westminster Abbey, and Big Ben to the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, and the London Eye. Outside London, there’s a lot more to marvel at, including Edinburgh Castle, the Roman Baths in Bath, Windsor Castle, and Canterbury Cathedral. And let’s not forget about the UK’s natural wonders, such as the Scottish Highlands, the picturesque countryside of the Cotswolds, and the White Cliffs of Dover. Most of these great places can be easily seen on day trips from the major cities.

Will my US electronics work in the UK?

Yes, but you will need a plug adapter. The UK uses a completely different outlet layout (Type G three-pin plugs). Additionally, the UK electrical grid runs at a higher voltage (240V) than the U.S. (120V). While modern electronics like smartphones, laptops, and tablets are dual-voltage and only need a cheap plug adapter, styling tools like US hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons will overheat and break unless they explicitly state 110V-240V on the label.

What should I pack for a trip to the UK?

The secret to packing for the UK is layers, waterproof gear, and your tech essentials. British weather is famously unpredictable and can change multiple times a day. Pack a high-quality waterproof rain jacket, a compact umbrella, and very comfortable walking shoes for cobblestone streets. Bring breathable layers (sweaters, t-shirts, light cardigans) to adapt easily. For your electronics, don't forget your (phone) camera, plug adapter, and a portable power bank to capture the stunning scenery without running out of battery during long days out.

Is the UK safe for tourists?

Yes, the UK is generally considered a very safe and welcoming country for international tourists. Violent crime against visitors is rare, but like any major travel destination, petty crime such as pickpocketing and smartphone theft does happen, particularly in crowded tourist areas of larger cities like London.

Can I leave some free days in my UK tour itinerary?

Absolutely. It's your vacation after all. Not every day has to be packed with a full-day guided tour. Enjoying the opportunity to spend the day privately wandering on your own, either in the bustling streets of London or in quaint villages, discovering little hidden gems, hopping on and off double-decker buses, or relaxing at cozy pubs among friendly locals are all fantastic ways to feel the essence of the captivating destination that is Great Britain.
