The Soca Valley's scenic keystone.
Kobarid, one of the most renowned historical places in Slovenia, is a small and amiable little town, situated at the historic crossroads of important routes. The nearby Soča offers excellent possibilities for kayaking, rafting, fishing and other water sports. The surrounding mountains offer superb conditions for hiking, gliding, mountain biking, and mountaineering. Kobarid is also the culinary capital of the Primorska Region, boasting many excellent restaurants.
Route for Kobarid tour
This town played an important role in the twelve Battles of the Isonzo, fought between Italy and Austria-Hungary over the span of much of World War I. The town's history, and the surrounding Isonzo Front, are presented in the Kobarid Museum, voted 1993's Best European Museum. Part of the events connected to the Soča Front were described by Ernest Hemingway in his famous novel A Farewell to Arms, based on his experiences there as a volunteer ambulance driver.
