Monterosso Al Mare

Travel and LeisureFodorsUSA TodayNew York TimesNational GeographicWashington PostVogue
As the northernmost of the Cinque Terre villages, Monterosso-al-Mare (literally "Red Mountain by the Sea") is the most accessible of five. Road, rail and ferry links, and a wide choice of hotels make this an excellent base for visiting all the other villages and neighboring towns as well. This choice and accessibility comes at a price – it is the least pretty of the five. Yet that will hardly seem to matter when you're looking out to sea, or hiking the steep trail to Vernazza, the next village.
Welcome to the Cinque Terre.
Monterosso has the largest and best equipped beach of all the Cinque Terre villages, so if some sun worship is on your vacation agenda, this is the perfect spot. As well as the opportunity to hike in the Cinque Terre national park between some of the villages, you can also take the regular trains or if seas allow, the ferry service to the other villages. Private and boat day trips provide another way to admire the villages from their most natural aspect, the sea.

Frequently Asked Questions about travel to Monterosso Al Mare

What are Monterosso's prices like?

Monterosso, located in the Cinque Terre region, tends to be a bit pricier compared to other Italian towns, especially during the high tourist season. Dining in restaurants can range from €20 to €40 per person, depending on the type of establishment and location. Attractions such as hiking the coastal trails are free, but boat trips or guided tours can range from €20 to €50. Overall, Monterosso offers a variety of options, though it tends to be on the higher end of the pricing scale for the region.

How can I get around Monterosso?

The best way to get around Monterosso is on foot, as the town is relatively small and most of the key attractions, including the beaches and historical sites, are within walking distance. Monterosso is divided into two parts: the older historic center and the newer area, which are connected by a short walk. To explore the surrounding Cinque Terre villages, you can take the train, as Monterosso has a train station that connects you to the other towns in the region. Alternatively, there are boats available that link the villages by sea, offering a scenic and enjoyable way to travel. Taxis are limited and not commonly used in the town, so walking or public transport are the most practical options.

Is Monterosso safe?

Monterosso is generally a very safe destination for tourists. The town has a low crime rate and is known for its welcoming atmosphere. As with any popular tourist destination, it's always a good idea to remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or near the train station. However, overall, Monterosso is considered a peaceful and secure place to visit, with no significant safety concerns.

Does Monterosso have options for people with dietary restrictions?

Even though Monterosso is quite small, it offers several dining options for people with dietary restrictions. Local restaurants often feature Mediterranean dishes, and you can find gluten-free pasta or pizza, as well as plant-based alternatives in some places. It’s always a good idea to inform the staff about your dietary restrictions.

How long should I stay in Monterosso?

We recommend spending at least two nights in Monterosso to fully enjoy the town, its beautiful beaches, and the other villages of Cinque Terre. If possible, consider adding a third night to allow time for a day trip to explore the surrounding area.
