This sample 12 day (11 night) itinerary covers many of the highlights of Croatia: Zagreb, Plitvice, Split, Hvar, and Dubrovnik. The services we provide as part of our comprehensive packages include accommodations, car rental, ferry tickets, boat, airport and port transfers and a rich program of activities, from hiking and driving off-road in Hvar to biking and wine tasting in the Konavle Valley near Dubrovnik, to ensure your Croatian vacation is packed with fun. There is also an option to travel between cities by private car or van transfers for an additional fee. All of our tours are custom, and this is just a sample meant to give an idea for what our trips are like, and the opportunities our destinations provide. One of our team in the region will be available to you during and leading up to the trip to answer any questions and arrange local services. You will receive access to your Guest Page, with its information on the best these destinations have to offer, including things to see and do, and other inside tips from restaurant recommendations to tipping advice. Upon arrival we will provide you with a local cell phone that you can use to contact our employee (who you will meet in person) throughout your trip. In all of our destinations, we offer a variety of memorable 3-5 accommodation options, including boutique hotels, charming B&Bs, and spacious apartments. With our firsthand experience, we can ensure they are all clean, comfortable, and centrally located, with local ambience.

2 Nights in Zagreb

Zagreb is a city where different worlds have long come together. Situated at the intersection of ancient trade routes between the Adriatic and Central Europe, it is a cosmopolitan place with various cultural influences evident in the cuisine and architecture at home in any Austro-Hungarian city. You’ll love exploring the open-air markets, impressive buildings, peaceful parks, and many delicious restaurants. Just strolling through the unique combination of medieval towers, 19th century palaces, ancient churches, and market squares is a pleasure, but there’s much more to do here. After exploring all that the city has to offer with a local guide, you’ll be able to make the most of your time. You could also take a guided bike tour around the city, to get a little exercise as you experience the city. But you’ll also want to explore some of the region surrounding Zagreb. As a longer day trip, you could see the delightful Trakoscan, a neo-Gothic castle sitting on a hilltop, surrounded by a romantic English style park with exotic trees and an artificial lake. While you’re there you can also stop in Varazdin to appreciate its ornate baroque architecture.

Day 1

Day 1 - Arrival in Zagreb

We'll arrange for a driver to meet you at Zagreb's airport and take you to your centrally located accommodation.

Our representative will then meet with you to answer any questions you have and to get you settled for the rest of your trip.

Day 2

Day 2 - Your First Full Day in Zagreb

Energetic Sightseeing

Included in your vacation package price.

Our bicycle tour of historic Zagreb is our most popular tour, and it’s easy to see why: It allows you to discover all of the major city sights in an easy and entertaining way, and in less than 2.5 hours. You’ll be picked up from your accommodation by the guide, then venture through the Lower Town and Upper Town of Zagreb, visiting the National Theatre, Parliament and the Government House, discovering Zagreb's green horseshoe, learning why there’s a "big bang" every day at noon, what's so bloody about Bloody Bridge and who got stoned at the Stone Gate. You'll also get tips about the best shopping areas and restaurants, and finally, what's most important in Zagreb: the best places for coffee, beer or rakija brandy. E-bikes are available if you want to ease yourself into your active vacation gently.

Day 3

Day 3 - Traveling to Plitvice by Rental Car

You'll leave Zagreb this morning to discover the natural wonders of Plitvice National Park. A rental car will be delivered to your accommodation based on your preferred departure time. It will be a manual transmission, but an automatic can be requested. We can also arrange for a GPS for an additional fee. If you're not in a hurry you might want to break your journey in the town of Karlovac, a name you'll become familiar with during your time in Croatia from the brewery named after it. The main site here is Dobrovac Castle, a fortress which watches over the town. Entrance fees to the national park must be booked online at least two days in advance.

The Plitvice Lakes are one of the most beautiful natural settings in Croatia. The national park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 and it’s easy to see why. You’ll find 16 lakes here in a stunning array of colors. Surrounding the lakes for 200 miles, the park has numerous hiking trails and plenty of places to appreciate the scenery. The lakes and waterfalls themselves stretch across five miles. This is nature at its most untouched!

An Active Day in the Park

Suggestion to explore on your own

In the mood for some running or hiking? If your answer is "yes," Plitvice is the perfect place for you. With its exceptional natural beauty, this area has always attracted active nature lovers. Once you enter the park we assure you that you will want to explore every part of this magnificent place. Use the opportunity to reconnect with the nature in Croatian first national park. Put on some comfortable clothes and footwear and explore one of the four hiking trails or seven different walking routes in the park. The longest is over 11 miles and will give you the best workout as well as keeping you away from the crowds.

Day 5

Day 5 - Traveling to Split by Rental Car

There are several interesting stops on your way from Plitvice to Split today. Make a stop at the Krka Waterfalls, a national park on the way to Split. Unlike Plitvice it's possible to take a dip in the waters here so pack your swimsuit. The very adventurous can be found leaping from a waterfall into a natural pool below. If you make any of these stops you will probably arrive in Split in the later afternoon, a perfect time to check in at your accommodation.

1 Night in Split

The Roman Emperor Diocletian made Split his home in the 4th Century AD, building a vast palace complex on the waterfront that stands to this day. In fact several of the accommodation options we offer in Split are nestled inside its ancient walls. These days there is an embankment in front of Diocletian's palace but the water used to go right up to the main wall. It's on this man-made strip of land that you'll find the Riva, a pedestrian promenade bustling with life. Split's UNESCO listed Old Town is contained within these old walls and is a pedestrian-only maze that it is quite easy, but fun, to get lost in. Who know what romantic hidden cafés you might find in one of the narrow streets and alleyways? To get the best out of your time in Split, however, we recommend taking a tour with a local guide. Split is very well connected for flights, with an international airport a half hour drive away and is a popular stopping point for our guests on their way between Dubrovnik and the islands of Hvar, Vis, or Korcula, all easily reached by a ferry from Split's port. If you base yourself in Split for a few days, you will find it is also perfect located for visits to some of Croatia's most stunning national parks.

Day 5

Day 5 - Arrival in Split

You'll most likely arrive in Split later in the afternoon, in time to check in to your accommodation after dropping off your rental car as you won't need it any longer. Relax for the rest of the day, taking an evening stroll through Split's Old Town and along its beautiful port.

Day 6

Day 6 - Traveling to Hvar by Ferry

They say the shortest route between two points is a straight line. That's usually the case in Croatia too but it isn't always the most fun. We've worked with a local tour provider to come up with an exceptional three-in-one way to get from Split to Hvar. Your day begins with a short walk to the port in Split, while your luggage gets there by golf buggy. Instead of the regular ferry you will join a small boat trip that leaves at 8:30 am to the Vis Blue Cave, then on to the jaw-dropping Pakleni Archipelago, where you'll have a couple of hours for swimming and lunch, then you'll arrive around 5 pm on Hvar. If the Blue Cave and a trip out to the Pakleni archipelago were on your Hvar must-see list, well you've already done it on the way, leaving more time to explore the island itself and saving money too!

One of the gems of the Adriatic, Hvar is more than a beautiful coastal town. It’s also an ancient epicenter of culture, boasting the oldest communal theater in Europe, and a stunning medieval fortress dating back to the 7th century. There’s a little bit of everything here, from history and architecture to modern culture, outdoor adventures and isolated beaches. Whether you want a vacation that’s action-packed or something more relaxing, Hvar will offer more than enough variety to please you. The longest of the Adriatic islands, Hvar’s fertile landscape makes it perfect for growing grapes, giving you several local vineyards to visit. Be sure to sample the local cuisine, which emphasizes freshly caught fish, warm bread, and vegetables grown on the island. We can offer a tasting tour at the finest local vineyards. Those seeking an active vacation will not be disappointed either, as there are several possibilities for sailing, swimming, exploring the sea caves along the coast. You can also take a hike in Hvar's many hills, or go offroad with a local guide. This is a relaxing destination with warm locals. It’s an ideal summer vacation spot.

When you arrive in the port of Hvar, you will be met and brought to your accommodation.

Hvar's Bars

Suggestion to explore on your own

During the summer, Hvar becomes one of Croatia's most popular party destinations. Various venues offer crazy parties that last past dawn. Carpe Diem Beach night club is not to be missed if you would like to experience real nightlife on Hvar. You don't just have options at night, as Hvar is very active during the day as well. Hula Hula Beach Bar is an excellent place to spend some time with a cocktail in your hand while dancing in the sun. Kiva bar and Ka’lavanda Music bar are great options for some cocktails and light music.

Day 7

Included in your vacation package price.

Today you’ll be exploring the island with a local guide. Hvar is a gorgeous combination of beaches and olive groves, fisherman and grape growers. You’ll be treated to an off-road tour through typical old villages, combining amazing scenery with authentic local charm. The unspoiled nature, panoramic views, and luscious groves are a sight to behold. You’ll stop at villages including Pitve, which dates back 2,000 years, for a delicious lunch of locally sourced cuisine, and maybe even a glass of the famous local rosé wine. After a full day of sightseeing and adventure, you’ll be driven back to your accommodation.

Hiking is the best way to explore this beautiful island, with its rugged coastline, cliffs and mountains, its small villages, olive groves, lavender fields, and vineyards. You’ll climb hills for beautiful panoramic views and then descend through olive groves and vineyards to the coast. Find secret places and special moments off the beaten path as you see the Hvar that few tourists get to. Don't forget to bring a swimsuit, as you'll visit hidden beaches along the coast!

Day 9

Day 9 - Traveling to Dubrovnik by Ferry

You'll have an early start today for the only departure of the day to Dubrovnik, the city on the sea that you've heard so much about. You will reach Dubrovnik around midday, so you'll have plenty of time to explore in the afternoon.

This ferry service is the fastest and most convenient way to get to Dubrovnik but if you would prefer taking the opportunity to see some sights along the way, for additional fee there's an option of going first to Split by ferry and taking a private transfer from there. If you choose, you can stop along the way, perhaps to explore Ston, the oyster capital of Croatia, or the city of Mostar in Bosnia. Please note that this is a full day transfer.

There’s a rich selection of live performances for music lovers here, as concerts are performed daily, and in July and August the Dubrovnik Summer Festival of music, theatre and dance brings incredible performers from around the world. The nightlife is also exciting, with restaurants, cafes and bars that will keep you socializing until dawn. You’ll be staying in beautiful accommodation within short walking distance to all the major sites, so you’ll be able to sample a little of everything. But there are also several exciting day trips and cruises to enjoy. From kayaking through hidden coves to an authentic Croatian cooking class, vineyard tours, and trips as far afield as Montenegro, you’ll have more than enough to fill your itinerary.

Night and the City

Suggestion to explore on your own

Discover the beauty of Dubrovnik while strolling down the cobbled streets at night and have a drink in one of the bars on the main street to just watch the world go by. Or visit the famous Buza Bar. With a name translating to "Hole in the Wall," Buza is not just a great bar, but a lovely location, with breathtaking views of incredible scenery at sunset.

Eat and Meet with Locals Small Group Dinner

Included in your vacation package price.

Looking for a unique dining experience in Dubrovnik? Dubrovnik's got some good (and some unfortunately not-so-good) restaurants but the best meal you can possibly have in town isn't at a restaurant. We'll secure you a spot for a Dalmatian dinner experience with Marija, an expert home cook whose cooking and food knowledge was recognized by the Wall Street Journal and National Geographic. Indulge in an enchanted evening of learning about real Dubrovnik and Dalmatian cuisine. Marija will prepare a multi-course meal with a local highlight, peka - a traditional style of cooking usually translated as "under the bell" and accompanied with great local wines. Our marketing manager, a gourmand, described this as the best meal he's ever eaten in Croatia. Find out why!

Activity Level : Easy
Duration : 3-4 hours

Day 11

Day 11 - Your Second Full Day in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik From a Different Perspective

Included in your vacation package price.

Get ready for a unique kayaking experience that will show you the city as you've never seen it before. Near the port, you'll start an unforgettable journey, paddling through the blue waters. Experienced tour guides will lead the way as you explore the coast of Dubrovnik. The views will be breathtaking and you'll also have a chance to see hidden caves and secret coves, along with local wildlife. Your kayak is equipped with a water-tight barrel so you don't need to worry about your valuables or camera getting wet!

Activity Level : Moderate
Duration : 3 hours

Climb Mount Srd'

Suggestion to explore on your own

Once you've had your fill of Dubrovnik, we recommend heading up Mount Srd' to Fort Imperial, and its panoramic views of the city and coastline. You can take a cable car up, but to skip the line and fee, you can easily hike to the top yourself, pausing to take in the views. Once at the summit, be sure to visit the museum honoring the fighting there during the 90s.

JayWay made our trip to Croatia and Slovenia effortless. I appreciated the time they took to work out an itinerary that fit within my budget without compromising the overall experience. The "little things" like delivery of ferry tickets that could not be purchased in advance and provision of a local cell phone ensured that there wasn't a single problem while we were on the road.
