The capital, as well as the geographical and cultural center of Spain, Madrid has long enthralled visitors. Since Prince Phillip II made Madrid the capital in the mid 16th century the city has become home to the largest functioning royal palace in Europe, as well as many museums, cafes, parks, universities, and cultural attractions. Although tourism in the city is growing, Spain's many other attractions mean the city is able to maintain its authenticity and you'll find local character and charm in each of its different neighborhoods. Madrid is perfectly located as a base for day trips to UNESCO-listed towns in central Spain and well connected for traveling onward to any corner of the country for further exploration.

The inspiration for this tour derives from the period in the 16-17th century when, under the reign of the Austrian Habsburg Dynasty, Madrid was first elevated to the status of capital of Spain. The 'Austrias', as locals refer to it, is eventually the most central neighborhood with all the major must-see and noteworthy sights of the Spanish capital. Your stroll will pass by the Royal Palace, the Plaza Mayor, the Prado, and many other fascinating edifices, churches, green parks, airy squares, broad avenues, and small alleys. 2 Nights in Granada

Located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Granada is one of the most visited cities in Spain. What makes this place so unique is that it was the capital of the Moorish kingdom until it was captured by the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492. Today you will find a fascinating city, rich in multicultural history - a beautiful reflection of its Arab and Christian past. The Alhambra, a spectacular Arab citadel and palace, is certainly one of the main highlights of Granada but besides seeing this signature sight, you'll also enjoy being in the birthplace of tapas. True to its roots there are still places in Granada where the tapas is free with your drinks. Granada is one of the preferred destinations for European students, giving it a fun, vibrant university city feel. It is also a city with an important artistic energy. Strolling along the streets you will surely come across artisans and musicians showcasing their talents.

Albaicin & Sacromonte, Granada's UNESCO Districts Private Walking Tour

Go Local in Albaicín

Please ask your travel advisor for the cost to add this to your package

Want to feel like a local right from the start? Then your first night should be planned to spend in Albaicín neighborhood. It is a totally distinct world from what Granada generally offers. A quarter used to be populated by Muslims bears the characteristics of Arab architecture. The whitewashed houses near the River Darro, bars and terraces which offer great tapas, drink and a view to the Alhambra which is the best to catch at sunset. Flamenco, the traditional Andalusian dance is performed in many local bars in Albaicin, like La Soleá and Jardines de Zoraya.

Day 4 - Your First Full Day in Granada

Alhambra Private Tour

Start with the Alhambra

Included in your vacation package price.

No visit to Granada is complete without seeing the Alhambra, a large complex of grandiose palaces and lush gardens, and once a mighty fortress, built during the Nasrid Dynasty. Take advantage of this private 3-hour tour with your local guide and fall in love with this architectural wonder!

Activity Level : Light
Duration : 3 hours

Private Tapas Tour in Albaicin

Open your Heart and Mouth

Please ask your travel advisor for the cost to add this to your package

Delicious Spanish food awaits you to taste in Granada. Some of the lesser known ones is 'sacromonte omlette'. The original ingredients include cooked sliced veal brains and bull's testicles, all diced and finally mixed with beaten eggs. Don't worry, it is not prepared in the traditional way anymore. Typical farmland dishes from the Alpujarras are 'patatas a lo pobre' - slowly fried potatoes with olive oil with peppers and eggs. Make sure to taste local wine! Viticulture is rising but is still based on extremely small size family-run wineries.

Activity Level : Light
Duration : 4 hours

Day 5

Day 5 - Traveling to Seville

You've marvelled at the Alhambra, and enjoyed tapas in Albacin, now it's time to put Seville's charms to the test. But first, there's a decision to make. You could take the most direct route to Granada, with just a tiny detour you could stop in Antequera, known for its ancient burial mounds, but also its Moorish fortress. Or you could add on 90 minutes of driving, but you'll get to see one of the most interesting sites of Andalusia, La Mezquita in Cordoba. A mosque that was converted into a cathedral. Or more correctly had a Catholic cathedral built inside of it. The day is yours to decide.

Although it may not be the most famous city in Spain, Seville is considered by many to be the most beautiful. You get a sense of its unique charms as you meander through winding streets surrounded by characteristic white and pipeclay yellow walls of the painted buildings. Due to the hustle and bustle of port activity, 16th century Seville was the richest city in Spain. Goods of all splendor brought from the New World arrived at the feet of awestruck locals. Venture further into the city to marvel at the largest Gothic Temple in the world, Seville Cathedral, or try to imagine the sense of pride and awe felt by locals for hundreds of years as they gazed up at The Giralda Tower. This minaret was built in the Almohad period and was, for centuries, the tallest building in Spain and constructed as part of a Grand Mosque.

Metropol Parasol

Suggestion to explore on your own

Sounds nice, right? Be shocking, be unorthodox, and put some mind-blowing constructions to the historical center. The Mushrooms of Incarnation as commonly called in Seville are huge gilled mushroom-shaped viewpoints where you can walk up, down, and even on the rooftop! Only half a mile away from the very center of Seville this is a place that you should visit on your first night to catch the sunset. On your way back we bet you won't resist a good cocktail, wine, or beer luring at you around every corner.

Day 6 - Your First Full Day in Seville

Road Trip Day Trips from Seville

Suggestion to explore on your own

You'll keep your rental car for one more day as you make the most of Seville's location to see one or more of the surrounding highlights. Head to Jerez de la Frontera to visit the home of sherry, the famous fortified wine. Go just a little further south and you're in Cadiz, an ancient port city. Or pick Ronda, the town perched over a deep gorge. Jamon Iberico lovers might opt for Huelva, the epicenter of production of the finest hams. Whichever you choose we can advise on what to do and see in each spot, and in some, we can set up local guides too upon request. When you get back to Seville you can return your rental car as you won't be needing it any longer.

Day 7 - Your Second Full Day in Seville

Seville Private Walking Tour

History in Paper and Stone

Included in your vacation package price.

2,200 years of turbulent history made Seville, the capital of Andalusia, a wonderful mix of historic churches and grandiose palaces and Moorish heritage. With our local guide, you will walk the Santa Cruz neighborhood, home to many popular locations, including two UNESCO sites: the Seville Cathedral – the world's largest Gothic cathedral – and the Real Alcázar palace with its stunning gardens, still in use by the Spanish royal family. At the end of the tour, your guide can bring you back to your accommodations, or give you tips for further exploration.

Duration : 3 hours

Tapas in Triana

Suggested activities for an additional cost, depending on your choice

Par example. Or in the San Lorenzo neighborhood. Or just around the corner of your hotel. The only thing you must promise to yourself (and your local representative) that you are going to drink a 'cana' of beer. Served chilled, order olives, lupins, and 'gambas' (prawns) to enhance the feeling and the tastes - this will make a good light lunch or afternoon snack. For a more sophisticated dining experience, you should head towards Triana, perhaps on a private food tour where you will learn more about the local neighborhood, the mouth-watering dishes, and its liquid companions.

Local Neighborhood Private Tapas Tour
